Real-time volume rendering for three-dimensional fetal ultrasound using volumetric photon mapping

Three-dimensional (3D) fetal ultrasound has been widely used in prenatal examinations. Realistic and real-time volumetric ultrasound volume rendering can enhance the effectiveness of diagnoses and assist obstetricians and pregnant mothers in communicating. However, this remains a challenging task because (1) there is a large amount of speckle noise in ultrasound images and (2) ultrasound images usually have low contrasts, making it difficult to distinguish different tissues and organs. However, traditional local-illumination-based methods do not achieve satisfactory results. This real-time requirement makes the task increasingly challenging. This study presents a novel real-time volume-rendering method equipped with a global illumination model for 3D fetal ultrasound visualization. This method can render direct illumination and indirect illumination separately by calculating single scattering and multiple scattering radiances, respectively. The indirect illumination effect was simulated using volumetric photon mapping. Calculating each photon's brightness is proposed using a novel screen-space destiny estimation to avoid complicated storage structures and accelerate computation. This study proposes a high dynamic range approach to address the issue of fetal skin with a dynamic range exceeding that of the display device. Experiments show that our technology, compared to conventional methodologies, can generate realistic rendering results with far more depth information.

Ultrasound Open Platforms for Next-Generation Imaging Technique Development

Open platform (OP) ultrasound systems are aimed primarily at the research community. They have been at the forefront of the development of synthetic aperture, plane wave, shear wave elastography, and vector flow imaging. Such platforms are driven by a need for broad flexibility of parameters that are normally preset or fixed within clinical scanners. OP ultrasound scanners are defined to have three key features including customization of the transmit waveform, access to the prebeamformed receive data, and the ability to implement real-time imaging. In this paper, a formative discussion is given on the development of OPs from both the research community and the commercial sector. Both software- and hardware-based architectures are considered, and their specifications are compared in terms of resources and programmability. Software-based platforms capable of real-time beamforming generally make use of scalable graphics processing unit architectures, whereas a common feature of hardware-based platforms is the use of field-programmable gate array and digital signal processor devices to provide additional on-board processing capacity. OPs with extended number of channels (>256) are also discussed in relation to their role in supporting 3-D imaging technique development. With the increasing maturity of OP ultrasound scanners, the pace of advancement in ultrasound imaging algorithms is poised to be accelerated.

A fast 3D adaptive bilateral filter for ultrasound volume visualization

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

This paper introduces an effective noise removal method for medical ultrasound volume data. Ultrasound data usually need to be filtered because they contain significant noise. Conventional two-dimensional (2D) filtering methods cannot use the implicit information between adjacent layers, and existing 3D filtering methods are slow because of complicated filter kernels. Even though one filter method utilizes simple filters for speed, it is inefficient at removing noise and does not take into account the characteristics of ultrasound sampling. To solve this problem, we introduce a fast filtering method using parallel bilateral filtering and adjust the filter window size proportionally according to its position.

METHODS

We devised a parallel bilateral filtering by obtaining a 3D summed area table of a quantized spatial filter. The filtering method is made adaptive by changing the kernel window size according to the distance from the ultrasound signal transmission point.

RESULTS

Experiments were performed to compare the noise removal and loss of original data of the anisotropic diffusion filtering, bilateral filtering, and adaptive bilateral filtering of ultrasound volume-rendered images. The results show that the adaptive filter correctly takes into account the sampling characteristics of the ultrasound volumes.

CONCLUSIONS

The proposed method can more efficiently remove noise and minimize distortion from ultrasound data than existing simple or non-adaptive filtering methods.

Graphics-processor-unit-based parallelization of optimized baseline wander filtering algorithms for long-term electrocardiography

Long-term electrocardiogram (ECG) often suffers from relevant noise. Baseline wander in particular is pronounced in ECG recordings using dry or esophageal electrodes, which are dedicated for prolonged registration. While analog high-pass filters introduce phase distortions, reliable offline filtering of the baseline wander implies a computational burden that has to be put in relation to the increase in signal-to-baseline ratio (SBR). Here, we present a graphics processor unit (GPU)-based parallelization method to speed up offline baseline wander filter algorithms, namely the wavelet, finite, and infinite impulse response, moving mean, and moving median filter. Individual filter parameters were optimized with respect to the SBR increase based on ECGs from the Physionet database superimposed to autoregressive modeled, real baseline wander. A Monte-Carlo simulation showed that for low input SBR the moving median filter outperforms any other method but negatively affects ECG wave detection. In contrast, the infinite impulse response filter is preferred in case of high input SBR. However, the parallelized wavelet filter is processed 500 and four times faster than these two algorithms on the GPU, respectively, and offers superior baseline wander suppression in low SBR situations. Using a signal segment of 64 mega samples that is filtered as entire unit, wavelet filtering of a seven-day high-resolution ECG is computed within less than 3 s. Taking the high filtering speed into account, the GPU wavelet filter is the most efficient method to remove baseline wander present in long-term ECGs, with which computational burden can be strongly reduced.

Medical image processing on the GPU - past, present and future

Graphics processing units (GPUs) are used today in a wide range of applications, mainly because they can dramatically accelerate parallel computing, are affordable and energy efficient. In the field of medical imaging, GPUs are in some cases crucial for enabling practical use of computationally demanding algorithms. This review presents the past and present work on GPU accelerated medical image processing, and is meant to serve as an overview and introduction to existing GPU implementations. The review covers GPU acceleration of basic image processing operations (filtering, interpolation, histogram estimation and distance transforms), the most commonly used algorithms in medical imaging (image registration, image segmentation and image denoising) and algorithms that are specific to individual modalities (CT, PET, SPECT, MRI, fMRI, DTI, ultrasound, optical imaging and microscopy). The review ends by highlighting some future possibilities and challenges.
