Human Face Detection Techniques: A Comprehensive Review and Future Research Directions

Face detection, which is an effortless task for humans, is complex to perform on machines. The recent veer proliferation of computational resources is paving the way for frantic advancement of face detection technology. Many astutely developed algorithms have been proposed to detect faces. However, there is little attention paid in making a comprehensive survey of the available algorithms. This paper aims at providing fourfold discussions on face detection algorithms. First, we explore a wide variety of the available face detection algorithms in five steps, including history, working procedure, advantages, limitations, and use in other fields alongside face detection. Secondly, we include a comparative evaluation among different algorithms in each single method. Thirdly, we provide detailed comparisons among the algorithms epitomized to have an all-inclusive outlook. Lastly, we conclude this study with several promising research directions to pursue. Earlier survey papers on face detection algorithms are limited to just technical details and popularly used algorithms. In our study, however, we cover detailed technical explanations of face detection algorithms and various recent sub-branches of the neural network. We present detailed comparisons among the algorithms in all-inclusive and under sub-branches. We provide the strengths and limitations of these algorithms and a novel literature survey that includes their use besides face detection.

Generalized Hybrid Constructive Learning Algorithm for Multioutput RBF Networks

An efficient generalized hybrid constructive (GHC) learning algorithm for multioutput radial basis function (RBF) networks is proposed to obtain a compact network with good generalization capability. By this algorithm, one can train the adjustable parameters and determine the optimal network structure simultaneously. First, an initialization method based on the growing and pruning algorithm is utilized to select the important initial hidden neurons and candidate ones. Then, by introducing a generalized hidden matrix, a structured parameter optimization algorithm is presented to train multioutput RBF network with fixed size, which combines Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm with least-square method together. Beginning from an appropriate number of hidden neurons, new neurons chosen from the candidates are added one by one each time when the training entraps into local minima. By incorporating an improved incremental constructive scheme, the training is built on previous results after adding new neurons such that the GHC learning algorithm avoids a trial-and-error procedure. Furthermore, based on the improved computation for LM training, the memory limitation problem is solved. The computational complexity analysis and experimental results demonstrate that better performance is efficiently achieved by this algorithm.

Cost-Sensitive Radial Basis Function Neural Network Classifier for Software Defect Prediction

Effective prediction of software modules, those that are prone to defects, will enable software developers to achieve efficient allocation of resources and to concentrate on quality assurance activities. The process of software development life cycle basically includes design, analysis, implementation, testing, and release phases. Generally, software testing is a critical task in the software development process wherein it is to save time and budget by detecting defects at the earliest and deliver a product without defects to the customers. This testing phase should be carefully operated in an effective manner to release a defect-free (bug-free) software product to the customers. In order to improve the software testing process, fault prediction methods identify the software parts that are more noted to be defect-prone. This paper proposes a prediction approach based on conventional radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) and the novel adaptive dimensional biogeography based optimization (ADBBO) model. The developed ADBBO based RBFNN model is tested with five publicly available datasets from the NASA data program repository. The computed results prove the effectiveness of the proposed ADBBO-RBFNN classifier approach with respect to the considered metrics in comparison with that of the early predictors available in the literature for the same datasets.

Integrating local and global error statistics for multi-scale RBF network training: an assessment on remote sensing data

Background

This study discusses the theoretical underpinnings of a novel multi-scale radial basis function (MSRBF) neural network along with its application to classification and regression tasks in remote sensing. The novelty of the proposed MSRBF network relies on the integration of both local and global error statistics in the node selection process.

Methodology and Principal Findings

The method was tested on a binary classification task, detection of impervious surfaces using a Landsat satellite image, and a regression problem, simulation of waveform LiDAR data. In the classification scenario, results indicate that the MSRBF is superior to existing radial basis function and back propagation neural networks in terms of obtained classification accuracy and training-testing consistency, especially for smaller datasets. The latter is especially important as reference data acquisition is always an issue in remote sensing applications. In the regression case, MSRBF provided improved accuracy and consistency when contrasted with a multi kernel RBF network.

Conclusion and Significance

Results highlight the potential of a novel training methodology that is not restricted to a specific algorithmic type, therefore significantly advancing machine learning algorithms for classification and regression tasks. The MSRBF is expected to find numerous applications within and outside the remote sensing field.

Using Radial Basis Function Networks for Function Approximation and Classification

The radial basis function (RBF) network has its foundation in the conventional approximation theory. It has the capability of universal approximation. The RBF network is a popular alternative to the well-known multilayer perceptron (MLP), since it has a simpler structure and a much faster training process. In this paper, we give a comprehensive survey on the RBF network and its learning. Many aspects associated with the RBF network, such as network structure, universal approimation capability, radial basis functions, RBF network learning, structure optimization, normalized RBF networks, application to dynamic system modeling, and nonlinear complex-valued signal processing, are described. We also compare the features and capability of the two models.
