Esophageal epithelium modeling based on globally coupled map: an approach toward precancerous lesion diagnosis

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is the most predominant malignancy of the esophagus. Its histological precursors (dysplasia) emerge in the esophageal epithelium that their progression into the underlying layers leads to cancer. The epithelium is the origin of many solid cancers and, accordingly, the focus of numerous computational models. In this work, we proposed a framework to establish a two-dimensional, globally coupled map to model the epithelium dynamics. The model aims at diagnosing the early stage of dysplasia based on microscopic images of endoscopic biopsies. We used the logistic map as a black-box model for the epithelial cells. By relating between the structure and dynamic of the epithelium, we defined the coupling function and proposed a case-dependent model in which the parameters were adjusted based on fractal geometry of each pathological image. Thus, by assigning different attractors to the cells' behavior, the lattice dynamic was investigated by the Lyapunov exponent. The decreasing pattern of Lyapunov exponent variations across the epithelium thickness had reasonable performance in diagnosing the normal specimens from the low-grade dysplasia ones. The results showed that there could be a direct relationship between the structural complexity of this system and its uncertainty of dynamics. The influence of filtering and downsampling on the estimation of transfer entropy

Transfer entropy (TE) provides a generalized and model-free framework to study Wiener-Granger causality between brain regions. Because of its nonparametric character, TE can infer directed information flow also from nonlinear systems. Despite its increasing number of applications in neuroscience, not much is known regarding the influence of common electrophysiological preprocessing on its estimation. We test the influence of filtering and downsampling on a recently proposed nearest neighborhood based TE estimator. Different filter settings and downsampling factors were tested in a simulation framework using a model with a linear coupling function and two nonlinear models with sigmoid and logistic coupling functions. For nonlinear coupling and progressively lower low-pass filter cut-off frequencies up to 72% false negative direct connections and up to 26% false positive connections were identified. In contrast, for the linear model, a monotonic increase was only observed for missed indirect connections (up to 86%). High-pass filtering (1 Hz, 2 Hz) had no impact on TE estimation. After low-pass filtering interaction delays were significantly underestimated. Downsampling the data by a factor greater than the assumed interaction delay erased most of the transmitted information and thus led to a very high percentage (67–100%) of false negative direct connections. Low-pass filtering increases the number of missed connections depending on the filters cut-off frequency. Downsampling should only be done if the sampling factor is smaller than the smallest assumed interaction delay of the analyzed network.

Synchrony based learning rule of Hopfield like chaotic neural networks with desirable structure

In this paper a new learning rule for the coupling weights tuning of Hopfield like chaotic neural networks is developed in such a way that all neurons behave in a synchronous manner, while the desirable structure of the network is preserved during the learning process. The proposed learning rule is based on sufficient synchronization criteria, on the eigenvalues of the weight matrix belonging to the neural network and the idea of Structured Inverse Eigenvalue Problem. Our developed learning rule not only synchronizes all neuron's outputs with each other in a desirable topology, but also enables us to enhance the synchronizability of the networks by choosing the appropriate set of weight matrix eigenvalues. Specifically, this method is evaluated by performing simulations on the scale-free topology.

Emergence in the central nervous system

"Emergence" is an idea that has received much attention in consciousness literature, but it is difficult to find characterizations of that concept which are both specific and useful. I will precisely define and characterize a type of epistemic ("weak") emergence and show that it is a property of some neural circuits throughout the CNS, on micro-, meso- and macroscopic levels. I will argue that possession of this property can result in profoundly altered neural dynamics on multiple levels in cortex and other systems. I will first describe emergent neural entities (ENEs) abstractly. I will then show how ENEs function specifically and concretely, and demonstrate some implications of this type of emergence for the CNS.

Decoding stimulus-reward pairing from local field potentials recorded from monkey visual cortex

Single-trial decoding of brain recordings is a real challenge, since it pushes the signal-to-noise ratio issue to the limit. In this paper, we concentrate on the single-trial decoding of stimulus-reward pairing from local field potentials (LFPs) recorded chronically in the visual cortical area V4 of monkeys during a perceptual conditioning task. We developed a set of physiologically meaningful features that can classify and monitor the monkey's training performance. One of these features is based on the recently discovered propagation of waves of LFPs in the visual cortex. Time-frequency features together with spatial features (phase synchrony and wave propagation) yield, after applying a feature selection procedure, an exceptionally good single-trial classification performance, even when using a linear classifier.
