A multilayered bidirectional associative memory model for learning nonlinear tasks

A multilayered bidirectional associative memory neural network is proposed to account for learning nonlinear types of association. The model (denoted as the MF-BAM) is composed of two modules, the Multi-Feature extracting bidirectional associative memory (MF), which contains various unsupervised network layers, and a modified Bidirectional Associative Memory (BAM), which consists of a single supervised network layer. The MF generates successive feature patterns from the original inputs. These patterns change the relationship between the inputs and targets in a way that the BAM can learn. The model was tested on different nonlinear tasks, such as the N-bit, Double Moon and its variants, and the 3-class spiral task. Behaviors were reported through learning errors, decision zones, and recall performances. Results showed that it was possible to learn all tasks consistently. By manipulating the number of units per layer and the number of unsupervised network layers in the MF, it was possible to change the level of nonlinearity observed in the decision boundaries. Furthermore, results indicated that different behaviors were achieved from the same set of inputs by using the different generated patterns. These findings are significant as they showed how a BAM-inspired model could solve nonlinear tasks in a more cognitively plausible fashion.

A GCM Neural Network with Piecewise Logistic Chaotic Map

In order to explore dynamic mechanisms and chaos control of globally coupled map (GCM) chaotic neural networks, a new GCM model, called the PL-GCM model is proposed, of which a piecewise logistic chaotic map is used instead of a logistic map. As a result of the strong chaotic features of the map, the neurons’ period and chaotic characteristics over a wide range of parameters are discussed, the dynamic mechanism is demonstrated in detail, and the numerical simulations such as state evolution, the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE), contour map, and so on are exhibited. Furthermore, chaos control of the proposed PL-GCM model is investigated by adopting two chaos control methods. It is shown that the network with conventional coupling or delay coupling can be precisely controlled to any specified periodic orbit by feedback control, and its dynamic associative memory is realized by the variable threshold parameter control method with external information. The results of simulations and experiments suggest that the network is controlled successfully and can output period patterns with a specified period that contains the stored pattern closest to the initial pattern. All features suggest that the network is fit for pattern recognition and information processing.

Quantum-Inspired Multidirectional Associative Memory With a Self-Convergent Iterative Learning

Quantum-inspired computing is an emerging research area, which has significantly improved the capabilities of conventional algorithms. In general, quantum-inspired hopfield associative memory (QHAM) has demonstrated quantum information processing in neural structures. This has resulted in an exponential increase in storage capacity while explaining the extensive memory, and it has the potential to illustrate the dynamics of neurons in the human brain when viewed from quantum mechanics perspective although the application of QHAM is limited as an autoassociation. We introduce a quantum-inspired multidirectional associative memory (QMAM) with a one-shot learning model, and QMAM with a self-convergent iterative learning model (IQMAM) based on QHAM in this paper. The self-convergent iterative learning enables the network to progressively develop a resonance state, from inputs to outputs. The simulation experiments demonstrate the advantages of QMAM and IQMAM, especially the stability to recall reliability.

AxonQuant: A Microfluidic Chamber Culture-Coupled Algorithm That Allows High-Throughput Quantification of Axonal Damage

Published methods for imaging and quantitatively analyzing morphological changes in neuronal axons have serious limitations because of their small sample sizes, and their time-consuming and nonobjective nature. Here we present an improved microfluidic chamber design suitable for fast and high-throughput imaging of neuronal axons. We developed the AxonQuant algorithm, which is suitable for automatic processing of axonal imaging data. This microfluidic chamber-coupled algorithm allows calculation of an 'axonal continuity index' that quantitatively measures axonal health status in a manner independent of neuronal or axonal density. This method allows quantitative analysis of axonal morphology in an automatic and nonbiased manner. Our method will facilitate large-scale high-throughput screening for genes or therapeutic compounds for neurodegenerative diseases involving axonal damage. When combined with imaging technologies utilizing different gene markers, this method will provide new insights into the mechanistic basis for axon degeneration. Our microfluidic chamber culture-coupled AxonQuant algorithm will be widely useful for studying axonal biology and neurodegenerative disorders.
