Distributed Energy Trading and Scheduling Among Microgrids via Multiagent Reinforcement Learning

Renewable energy technologies empower microgrids to generate electricity to supply themselves and trade with others. Under this paradigm, microgrids have become autonomous entities that must intelligently determine their policies for energy trading and scheduling. Many factors influence a microgrid's decision-making, such as the complex microgrid infrastructure, the uncertain energy yield and demand, and the competition among the energy market players. These factors are usually hard to precisely model, and deriving the optimal policy for a microgrid is challenging. We propose a multiagent reinforcement learning (MARL) approach with an attention mechanism to learn the optimal policies for the microgrids without complex system modeling. We model each microgrid as an autonomous agent, which learns how to schedule energy resources and trade with others by collaborating with other agents. We adopt attention mechanism to enable intelligently selecting contextual information for the training of each agent. After training, an agent can make control decisions using only its local information, which can well preserve the microgrids' privacy and reduce the communication overhead among microgrids to facilitate distributed control. We implement a simulation environment and evaluate the performances of our proposed method using real-world datasets. The experimental results show that our method can significantly reduce the cost of the microgrids compared with the baseline methods.

Distributed Group Coordination of Multiagent Systems in Cloud Computing Systems Using a Model-Free Adaptive Predictive Control Strategy

This article studies the group coordinated control problem for distributed nonlinear multiagent systems (MASs) with unknown dynamics. Cloud computing systems are employed to divide agents into groups and establish networked distributed multigroup-agent systems (ND-MGASs). To achieve the coordination of all agents and actively compensate for communication network delays, a novel networked model-free adaptive predictive control (NMFAPC) strategy combining networked predictive control theory with model-free adaptive control method is proposed. In the NMFAPC strategy, each nonlinear agent is described as a time-varying data model, which only relies on the system measurement data for adaptive learning. To analyze the system performance, a simultaneous analysis method for stability and consensus of ND-MGASs is presented. Finally, the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed NMFAPC strategy are verified by numerical simulations and experimental examples. The achievement also provides a solution for the coordination of large-scale nonlinear MASs.

A Novel Equivalent Model of Active Distribution Networks Based on LSTM

Dynamic behaviors of distribution networks are of great importance for the power system analysis. Nowadays, due to the integration of the renewable energy generation, energy storage, plug-in electric vehicles, and distribution networks turn from passive systems to active ones. Hence, the dynamic behaviors of active distribution networks (ADNs) are much more complex than the traditional ones. The research interests how to establish an accurate model of ADNs in modern power systems are drawing a great deal of attention. In this paper, motivated by the similarities between power system differential algebraic equations and the forward calculation flows of recurrent neural networks (RNNs), a long short-term memory (LSTM) RNN-based equivalent model is proposed to accurately represent the ADNs. First, the adoption reasons of the proposed LSTM RNN-based equivalent model are explained, and its advantages are analyzed from the mathematical point of view. Then, the accuracy and generalization performance of the proposed model is evaluated using the IEEE 39-Bus New England system integrated with ADNs in the study cases. It reveals that the proposed LSTM RNN-based equivalent model has a generalization capability to capture the dynamic behaviors of ADNs with high accuracy.

A Multithread Nested Neural Network Architecture to Model Surface Plasmon Polaritons Propagation

Surface Plasmon Polaritons are collective oscillations of electrons occurring at the interface between a metal and a dielectric. The propagation phenomena in plasmonic nanostructures is not fully understood and the interdependence between propagation and metal thickness requires further investigation. We propose an ad-hoc neural network topology assisting the study of the said propagation when several parameters, such as wavelengths, propagation length and metal thickness are considered. This approach is novel and can be considered a first attempt at fully automating such a numerical computation. For the proposed neural network topology, an advanced training procedure has been devised in order to shun the possibility of accumulating errors. The provided results can be useful, e.g., to improve the efficiency of photocells, for photon harvesting, and for improving the accuracy of models for solid state devices.
