Performance Evaluation of Small Animal PET Scanners With Different System Designs

Energy spectra due to the intrinsic radiation of LYSO/LSO scintillators for a wide range of crystal sizes

PURPOSE

Most detectors in current positron emission tomography (PET) scanners and prototypes use lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) or lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) scintillators. The aim of this work is to provide a complete set of background energy spectra, due to the scintillator intrinsic radioactivity, for a wide range of crystal sizes.

METHODS

An analytical model, developed and validated in a previous work, was used to obtain the background energy spectra of square base cuboids of different dimensions. The model uses the photon absorption probabilities of the three gamma rays (88, 202, and 307 keV) emitted following the beta decay of ¹⁷⁶ Lu to ¹⁷⁶ Hf excited states. These probabilities were obtained for each crystal size considered in this work from Monte Carlo simulations using the PENELOPE code. The probabilities are then used to normalize and shift the beta spectrum to the corresponding energy value of the simultaneous detection of one, two, or three gamma rays in the scintillator. The simulated cuboids had side lengths of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 mm and crystal thickness T = 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm. From these results a complete set of energy spectra, including intermediate dimensions, were obtained. In addition, LYSO and LSO were compared in terms of their analytical background energy spectra for two crystal sizes. The analytical spectra were convolved using a variable Gaussian kernel to account for the energy resolution of a typical detector. A parameterization of the photon absorption probabilities for each gamma ray energy as a function of the cuboid volume to surface area ratio was obtained.

RESULTS

A data set of L(Y)SO background energy spectra was obtained and is available for the reader as 2D histograms. The model accurately predicts the structure of the energy spectra including the relative peak and valley intensities. The data allow visualizing how the structure evolves with increasing crystal length and thickness. Lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate and LSO present very similar background energy spectra for the range of sizes studied in this work and therefore the data generated can be confidently used for both scintillator materials. The filtered spectra showed a variable shift in the main peaks, depending on crystal size, alerting that to achieve a correct detector calibration using the background spectrum is not straight forward and requires precise data analysis and measurements. In addition, we found that square base L(Y)SO cuboids with same volume to surface area ratio have background spectra with the same structure.

CONCLUSIONS

We present the energy spectra of L(Y)SO crystal of different sizes which will be very useful for industry and research groups developing and simulating detectors for positron imaging applications in terms of calibration, quality assurance, crystal maps, detector fine gain tuning, background reduction and other applications using the long-lived ¹⁷⁶ Lu source. We analyzed the data produced in this work and found that crystal cuboids with equal volume to surface area ratio produce the same background energy spectra, a conclusion that simplifies its calculation and clarifies why the same energy spectrum is observed under different experimental setups.

A PET system design by using mixed detectors: resolution properties

We investigate a cylindrical positron emission tomography (PET) system design strategy that employs two groups of detectors with different resolutions. The reason for considering this strategy is the observation that in many tasks one would want a higher resolution in a targeted region, which contains lesions or organs of interest, than that in the rest of the subject. Although one can design a PET system to meet the highest resolution required by the imaging task, this is not cost efficient because the superior resolution outside the target region is not needed. To address this issue, investigators have proposed the concept of an insert, in which a high-resolution detector (HRD) is inserted into a parent PET system to locally increase the image resolution. In this paper, we examine an alternative strategy in which the system is made of one arc of normal-resolution detectors with respect to, for example, whole-body imaging and one arc of HRDs. By using Monte Carlo simulations, we study the resolution properties of this system design and examine how they are affected by the location and size of the HRD arc. Our results show that the region obtained by connecting the edges of the HRD arc to the center of the field-of-view (FOV) can have significantly better resolution than that in the rest of the FOV, as well as better resolution uniformity.

Accurate and efficient modeling of the detector response in small animal multi-head PET systems

In fully three-dimensional PET imaging, iterative image reconstruction techniques usually outperform analytical algorithms in terms of image quality provided that an appropriate system model is used. In this study we concentrate on the calculation of an accurate system model for the YAP-(S)PET II small animal scanner, with the aim to obtain fully resolution- and contrast-recovered images at low levels of image roughness. For this purpose we calculate the system model by decomposing it into a product of five matrices: (1) a detector response component obtained via Monte Carlo simulations, (2) a geometric component which describes the scanner geometry and which is calculated via a multi-ray method, (3) a detector normalization component derived from the acquisition of a planar source, (4) a photon attenuation component calculated from x-ray computed tomography data, and finally, (5) a positron range component is formally included. This system model factorization allows the optimization of each component in terms of computation time, storage requirements and accuracy. The main contribution of this work is a new, efficient way to calculate the detector response component for rotating, planar detectors, that consists of a GEANT4 based simulation of a subset of lines of flight (LOFs) for a single detector head whereas the missing LOFs are obtained by using intrinsic detector symmetries. Additionally, we introduce and analyze a probability threshold for matrix elements of the detector component to optimize the trade-off between the matrix size in terms of non-zero elements and the resulting quality of the reconstructed images. In order to evaluate our proposed system model we reconstructed various images of objects, acquired according to the NEMA NU 4-2008 standard, and we compared them to the images reconstructed with two other system models: a model that does not include any detector response component and a model that approximates analytically the depth of interaction as detector response component. The comparisons confirm previous research results, showing that the usage of an accurate system model with a realistic detector response leads to reconstructed images with better resolution and contrast recovery at low levels of image roughness.
