Fast Orthogonal Row-Column Electronic Scanning With Top-Orthogonal-to-Bottom Electrode Arrays

Enhancing Row-Column Array (RCA)-Based 3D Ultrasound Vascular Imaging With Spatial-Temporal Similarity Weighting

Ultrasound vascular imaging (UVI) is a valuable tool for monitoring the physiological states and evaluating the pathological diseases. Advancing from conventional two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) UVI would enhance the vasculature visualization, thereby improving its reliability. Row-column array (RCA) has emerged as a promising approach for cost-effective ultrafast 3D imaging with a low channel count. However, ultrafast RCA imaging is often hampered by high-level sidelobe artifacts and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which makes RCA-based UVI challenging. In this study, we propose a spatial-temporal similarity weighting (St-SW) method to overcome these challenges by exploiting the incoherence of sidelobe artifacts and noise between datasets acquired using orthogonal transmissions. Simulation, in vitro blood flow phantom, and in vivo experiments were conducted to compare the proposed method with existing orthogonal plane wave imaging (OPW), row-column-specific frame-multiply-and-sum beamforming (RC-FMAS), and XDoppler techniques. Qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method. In simulations, the proposed method reduced the sidelobe level by 31.3 dB, 20.8 dB, and 14.0 dB, compared to OPW, XDoppler, and RC-FMAS, respectively. In the blood flow phantom experiment, the proposed method significantly improved the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the tube by 26.8 dB, 25.5 dB, and 19.7 dB, compared to OPW, XDoppler, and RC-FMAS methods, respectively. In the human submandibular gland experiment, it not only reconstructed a more complete vasculature but also improved the CNR by more than 15 dB, compared to OPW, XDoppler, and RC-FMAS methods. In summary, the proposed method effectively suppresses the side-lobe artifacts and noise in images collected using an RCA under low SNR conditions, leading to improved visualization of 3D vasculatures.

TOBE-Costas Arrays for Fast High-Resolution 3-D Power Doppler Imaging

Two-dimensional sparse arrays and row-column arrays are both alternatives to 2-D fully addressed arrays with lower channel counts. Row-column arrays have recently demonstrated fast 3-D structural and flow imaging but commonly suffer from high grating lobes or require multiplexing to achieve better quality. Two-dimensional sparse arrays enable full-volume acquisitions for each transmit event, but plane-wave transmissions with them usually lack quality in terms of uniformity of wavefronts. Here, we propose a novel architecture that combines both types of these arrays in one aperture, enabling imaging using row-column or sparse arrays alone or a hybrid imaging scheme where the row-column array is used in transmission and a 2-D sparse array in reception. This hybrid imaging scheme can potentially solve the shortcomings of each of these approaches. The sparse array layout chosen is a Costas array, characterized by having only one element per row and column, facilitating its integration with row-column arrays. We simulate images acquired with TOBE-Costas arrays using the hybrid imaging scheme and compare them to row-column and sparse spiral arrays of equivalent aperture size (128λ × 128λ at 7.5 MHz) in ultrafast plane-wave imaging of point targets and 3-D power Doppler imaging of synthetic flow phantoms. Our simulation results show that TOBE-Costas arrays exhibit superior resolution and lower sidelobe levels compared with plane-wave compounding with row-column arrays. Compared with density-tapered spiral arrays, they provide a larger field of view and finer resolution.

cMUT technology developments

Capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (cMUT) technology has steadily advanced since its advent in the mid-1990's. Though cMUTs have not supplanted piezoelectric transducers for medical ultrasound imaging to date, researchers and engineers are continuing to improve cMUTs and leverage unique cMUT characteristics toward new applications. While not intended to be an exhaustive review of every aspect of cMUT state-of-the-art, this article provides a brief overview of cMUT benefits, challenges, and opportunities, as well as recent progress in cMUT research and translation.

Transverse oscillation tensor velocity imaging using a row-column addressed array: Experimental validation

Tensor velocity imaging (TVI) performance with a row-column probe was assessed for constant flow in a straight vessel phantom and pulsatile flow in a carotid artery phantom. TVI, i.e., estimating the 3-D velocity vector as a function of time and spatial position, was performed using the transverse oscillation cross-correlation estimator, and the flow was acquired with a Vermon 128+128 row-column array probe connected to a Verasonics 256 research scanner. The emission sequence used 16 emissions per image, and a TVI volume rate of 234 Hz was obtained for a pulse repetition frequency (f_prf) of 15 kHz. The TVI was validated by comparing estimates of the flow rate through several cross-sections with the flow rate set by the pump. For the constant 8 mL/s flow in the straight vessel phantom with relative estimator bias (RB) and standards deviation (RSD) was found in the range of -2.18% to 0.55% and 4.58% to 2.48% in measurements performed with an f_prf of 15, 10, 8, and 5 kHz. The pulsatile flow in the carotid artery phantom the was set to an average flow rate of 2.44 mL/s, and the flow was acquired with an f_prf of 15, 10, and 8 kHz. The pulsatile flow was estimated from two measurement sites: one at a straight section of the artery and one at the bifurcation. In the straight section, the estimator predicted the average flow rate with an RB value ranging from -7.99% to 0.10% and an RSD value ranging from 10.76% to 6.97%. At the bifurcation, RB and RSD values were between -7.47% to 2.02% and 14.46% to 8.89%. This demonstrates that an RCA with 128 receive elements can accurately capture the flow rate through any cross-section at a high sampling rate.

Costas Sparse 2-D Arrays for High-Resolution Ultrasound Imaging

Two-dimensional arrays enable volumetric ultrasound imaging but have been limited to small aperture size and hence low resolution due to the high cost and complexity of fabrication, addressing, and processing associated with large fully addressed arrays. Here, we propose Costas arrays as a gridded sparse 2-D array architecture for volumetric ultrasound imaging. Costas arrays have exactly one element for every row and column, such that the vector displacement between any pair of elements is unique. These properties ensure aperiodicity, which helps eliminate grating lobes. Compared with previously reported works, we studied the distribution of active elements based on an order-256 Costas layout on a wider aperture ( 96 λ×96 λ at 7.5 MHz center frequency) for high-resolution imaging. Our investigations with focused scanline imaging of point targets and cyst phantoms showed that Costas arrays exhibit lower peak sidelobe levels compared with random sparse arrays of the same size and offer comparable performance in terms of contrast compared with Fermat spiral arrays. In addition, Costas arrays are gridded, which could ease the manufacturing and has one element for each row/column, which enables simple interconnection strategies. Compared with state-of-the-art matrix probes, which are commonly 32×32 , the proposed sparse arrays achieve higher lateral resolution and a wider field of view.

High-Voltage Bias-Switching Electronics for Volumetric Imaging Using Electrostrictive Row-Column Arrays

Top orthogonal to bottom electrode (TOBE) arrays, also known as row-column arrays, hold great promise for fast high-quality volumetric imaging. Bias-voltage-sensitive TOBE arrays based on electrostrictive relaxors or micromachined ultrasound transducers can enable readout from every element of the array using only row and column addressing. However, these transducers require fast bias-switching electronics which are not part of a conventional ultrasound system and are nontrivial. Here we report on the first modular bias-switching electronics enabling transmit, receive, and biasing on every row and every column of TOBE arrays, supporting up to 1024 channels. We demonstrate the performance of these arrays by connection to a transducer testing interface board (IB) and demonstrate 3-D structural imaging of tissue and 3-D power Doppler imaging of phantoms with real-time B-scan imaging and reconstruction rates. Our developed electronics enable interfacing of bias-switchable TOBE arrays to channel-domain ultrasound platforms with software-defined reconstruction for next-generation 3-D imaging at unprecedented scales and imaging rates.

3-D H-scan ultrasound imaging of relative scatterer size using a matrix array transducer and sparse random aperture compounding

H-scan ultrasound (US) is a high-resolution imaging technique for soft tissue characterization. By acquiring data in volume space, H-scan US can provide insight into subtle tissue changes or heterogenous patterns that might be missed using traditional cross-sectional US imaging approaches. In this study, we introduce a 3-dimensional (3-D) H-scan US imaging technology for voxel-level tissue characterization in simulation and experimentation. Using a matrix array transducer, H-scan US imaging was developed to evaluate the relative size of US scattering aggregates in volume space. Experimental data was acquired using a programmable US system (Vantage 256, Verasonics Inc, Kirkland, WA) equipped with a 1024-element (32 × 32) matrix array transducer (Vermon Inc, Tours, France). Imaging was performed using the full array in transmission. Radiofrequency (RF) data sequences were collected using a sparse random aperture compounding technique with 6 different data compounding approaches. Plane wave imaging at five angles was performed at a center frequency of 8 MHz. Scan conversion and attenuation correction were applied. To generate the 3-D H-scan US images, a convolution filter bank (N = 256) was then used to process the RF data sequences and measure the spectral content of the backscattered US signals before volume reconstruction. Preliminary experimental studies were conducted using homogeneous phantom materials embedded with spherical US scatterers of varying diameter, i.e., 27 to 45, 63 to 75, or 106-126 μm. Both simulated and experimental results revealed that 3-D H-scan US images have a low spatial variance when tested with homogeneous phantom materials. Furthermore, H-scan US is considerably more sensitive than traditional B-mode US imaging for differentiating US scatterers of varying size (p = 0.001 and p = 0.93, respectively). Overall, this study demonstrates the feasibility of 3-D H-scan US imaging using a matrix array transducer for tissue characterization in volume space.

A High-Performance 3-D Imaging Technique Using Simultaneous Azimuth and Elevation Compounding

A new technique for 3-D imaging with a row-column array (RCA) configuration has been developed. The technique requires an electrostrictive piezoelectric for the active substrate. While the top set of electrodes is connected to RF transmit and receive channels for conventional diverging wave imaging (DWI), the orthogonal bottom set of electrodes is connected to independently controlled variable dc bias channels. By implementing modulated bias patterns compounded across multiple pulses, fine delay control across the bottom elements can be achieved simultaneously with imaging with the top set of electrodes. This resulted in a high-quality two-way focus in both azimuth and elevation. A 20-MHz electrostrictive composite substrate was fabricated, and 64 top ×64 bottom electrodes were patterned and connected to custom beamforming and biasing electronics. The point spread functions were generated in all dimensions, and the -6 dB resolution was measured to be 93 [Formula: see text] axially, [Formula: see text] in the azimuth, and 328 [Formula: see text] in the elevation dimension. This was in good agreement with the simulated resolutions of 80, 273, and 280 [Formula: see text], respectively.

Anatomic and Functional Imaging Using Row-Column Arrays

Row-column (RC) arrays have the potential to yield full 3-D ultrasound imaging with a greatly reduced number of elements compared to fully populated arrays. They, however, have several challenges due to their special geometry. This review article summarizes the current literature for RC imaging and demonstrates that full anatomic and functional imaging can attain a high quality using synthetic aperture (SA) sequences and modified delay-and-sum beamforming. Resolution can approach the diffraction limit with an isotropic resolution of half a wavelength with low sidelobe levels, and the field of view can be expanded by using convex or lensed RC probes. GPU beamforming allows for three orthogonal planes to be beamformed at 30 Hz, providing near real-time imaging ideal for positioning the probe and improving the operator's workflow. Functional imaging is also attainable using transverse oscillation and dedicated SA sequence for tensor velocity imaging for revealing the full 3-D velocity vector as a function of spatial position and time for both blood velocity and tissue motion estimation. Using RC arrays with commercial contrast agents can reveal super-resolution imaging (SRI) with isotropic resolution below [Formula: see text]. RC arrays can, thus, yield full 3-D imaging at high resolution, contrast, and volumetric rates for both anatomic and functional imaging with the same number of receive channels as current commercial 1-D arrays.

Ultrafast Orthogonal Row-Column Electronic Scanning (uFORCES) With Bias-Switchable Top-Orthogonal-to-Bottom Electrode 2-D Arrays

Top-orthogonal-to-bottom electrode (TOBE) arrays, also known as row-column arrays, have shown great promise as an alternative to fully wired 2-D arrays, owing to a considerable reduction in channels. Novel imaging schemes with bias-switchable TOBE arrays were previously shown to offer promise compared with previous nonbias-switchable row-column imaging schemes and compared with previously developed explososcan methods, however, they required significant coherent compounding. Here, we introduce ultrafast orthogonal row-column electronic scanning (uFORCES), an ultrafast coded synthetic aperture imaging method. Unlike its FORCES predecessor, uFORCES can achieve coherent compounding with only a few transmit events and may, thus, be more robust to tissue motion. We demonstrate through simulations that uFORCES can potentially offer improved resolution compared with the matrix probes having beamformers constrained by the paraxial approximation. Also, unlike current matrix probe technology incorporating microbeamforming, uFORCES with bias-switchable TOBE arrays can achieve ultrafast imaging at thousands of frames per second using only row and column addressing. We also demonstrate the experimental implementation of uFORCES using a fabricated 128 ×128 electrostrictive TOBE array on a crossed 25- [Formula: see text] gold wire phantom and a tissue-mimicking phantom. The potential for improved resolution and ultrafast imaging with uFORCES could enable new essential imaging capabilities for clinical and preclinical ultrasound.

A New 3-D Imaging Technique Integrating Ultrafast Compounding, Hadamard Encoding, and Reconfigurable Fresnel Lensing

Crossed electrode arrays address some of the challenges associated with 3-D ultrasound imaging because of the significant reduction in the number of elements ( 2N versus N² ). However, creating a two-way focused 3-D image in real time is difficult with these arrays because azimuth and elevation dimensions cannot be beamformed at the same time. This work describes a new 3-D imaging technique that uses the flexibility of bias-sensitive substrates to create a high-quality elevation focus on a crossed electrode array. The principle behind this technique is to perform conventional compound imaging with an azimuth set of electrodes while implementing a bias controllable elevation lens with an elevation set of electrodes. On transmit, the biases are chosen to mimic a Fresnel lens. Then, on receive, the Hadamard coding is implemented along the elevation dimension. After decoding, we gain the RF data for each element across the elevation aperture even though there is effectively only one channel in that dimension. A 30-MHz, 128-element crossed electrode relaxor array was fabricated on a 1-3 electrostrictive composite substrate and was used to demonstrate the performance of the imaging technique. The on-axis -6-dB beamwidths were simulated to be 175 and [Formula: see text] in the azimuth and elevation directions, respectively, and the focus remained isotropic in the furthest elevation slice. Images were generated of a wire phantom to confirm the performance of the azimuth and elevational radiation patterns with good agreement between simulation and experiment. High-resolution 3-D volumetric images were generated of an ex vivo rat brain. Images of the cerebellum showed that the white and gray matter tracts could clearly be visualized with isometric resolution in both the azimuth and elevation dimensions.

Ultrafast Phased-Array Imaging Using Sparse Orthogonal Diverging Waves

We present a new transmit pulse encoding scheme for ultrafast phased-array imaging called sparse orthogonal diverging wave imaging (SODWI). In SODWI, Hadamard encoding is used to selectively invert transmit pulse phases beamformed with a diverging wave delay profile. This approach has the advantage of delivering energy to a much wider field of view than conventional Hadamard-encoded multielement synthetic transmit aperture (HMSTA), making it more suitable for phased-array applications. With SODWI, we use a synthetic transmit element delay insertion (STEDI) approach which produces significant improvements in resolution, grating lobe level, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over HMSTA. We also show how in SODWI a subset of the Hadamard codes can be sparsely selected to increase the imaging frame rate at the expense of image quality. SODWI is then compared with a variety of beamforming schemes for phased-array applications, including HMSTA, STEDI-HMSTA, diverging wave imaging (DWI), synthetic aperture (SA), and focused imaging. We present the results by implementing this technique on a 64-channel custom beamforming platform with a 40-MHz phased array. When a full set of codes is used, SODWI outperforms focused imaging contrast and SNR by 2.7 and 1.8 dB in addition to an 8× increase in frame rate, respectively.

Imaging Performance for Two Row-Column Arrays

This study evaluates the volumetric imaging performance of two prototyped 62 + 62 row-column-addressed (RCA) 2-D array transducer probes using three synthetic aperture imaging (SAI) emission sequences and two different beamformers. The probes are fabricated using capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) and piezoelectric transducer (PZT) technology. Both have integrated apodization to reduce ghost echoes and are designed with similar acoustical features, i.e., 3-MHz center frequency, λ /2 pitch, and [Formula: see text] active footprint. Raw RF data are obtained using an experimental research ultrasound scanner, SARUS. The SAI sequences are designed for imaging down to 14 cm at a volume rate of 88 Hz. Two beamforming methods, spatial matched filtering and row-column adapted delay-and-sum, are used for beamforming the RF data. The imaging quality is investigated through simulations and phantom measurements. Both probes on average have similar lateral full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) values, but the PZT probe has 20% smaller cystic resolution values and 70% larger contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) compared to the capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) probe. The CMUT probe can penetrate down to 15 cm, and the PZT probe down to 30 cm. The CMUT probe has 17% smaller axial FWHM values. The matched filter focusing shows an improved B-mode image for measurements on a cyst phantom with an improved speckle pattern and better visualization of deeper lying cysts. The results of this study demonstrate the potentials of RCA 2-D arrays against fully addressed 2-D arrays, which are low channel count (e.g., 124 instead of 3844), low acoustic intensity mechanical index (MI ≤ 0.88 and spatial-peak-temporal-average intensity [Formula: see text]), and high penetration depth (down to 30 cm), which makes 3-D imaging at high volume rates possible with equipment in the price range of conventional 2-D imaging.

Fast Orthogonal Row-Column Electronic Scanning (FORCES) Experiments and Comparisons

Three-dimensional ultrasound imaging presents technical challenges of addressing large numbers of elements in 2D array transducers. Top-Orthogonal to Bottom Electrode (TOBE) 2D transducer arrays can simplify addressing but typical imaging methods with such arrays enable only one-way focusing in azimuth and elevation. Here experimental results are reported for the Fast Orthogonal Row-Column Electronic Scanning (FORCES) imaging scheme implemented on a 64 ×64 element bias-sensitive electrostrictive relaxor TOBE array. The FORCES imaging scheme involves transmitting along rows to form an elevational transmit focus, while biasing columns with bias patterns selected from a Hadamard matrix. Channel data from columns is received and decoded for synthetic aperture beamforming in azimuth. This scheme offers two-way azimuthal focusing. Volumetric imaging experiments were conducted using wire phantoms as well as on rat hearts using two different TOBE imaging schemes: Scheme 1 (transmit focusing in elevation and receive focusing in azimuth) and FORCES. Wire phantom experiments at a depth of 2 cm showed an azimuthal resolution of 0.42 mm and 0.31 mm with Scheme 1 and FORCES, respectively. We also compared the elevational imaging performance of these imaging schemes with a mechanically scanned linear array. The FORCES imaging displayed an elevational resolution of 0.46 mm at a depth of 2 cm and the linear array an elevational resolution of 0.72 cm. The novel TOBE array architecture and FORCES imaging scheme thus enable high-quality 3D ultrasound imaging using only row-column addressing and bias control, and may prove an enabling technology for many future 3D imaging platforms.

Towards Ultrasound Everywhere: A Portable 3D Digital Back-End Capable of Zone and Compound Imaging

Ultrasound imaging is a ubiquitous diagnostic technique, but does not fit the requirements of the telemedicine approach, because it relies on the real-time manipulation and image recognition skills of a trained expert, called sonographer. Sonographers are only available in hospitals and clinics, negating or at least delaying access to ultrasound scans in many locales-rural areas, developing countries-as well as in medical rescue operations. Telesonography would require an advanced imager that supports three-dimensional (3-D) acquisition; this would allow untrained operators to acquire broad scans and upload them remotely for diagnosis. Such advanced imagers do exist, but do not meet several other requirements for telesonography, such as being portable, inexpensive, and sufficiently low power to enable battery operation. In this work, we present our prototype of the first portable 3-D digital ultrasound back-end system. The prototype is implemented in a single midrange Xilinx field programmable gate array (FPGA), for an estimated power consumption of 5 W. The device supports up to 1024 input channels, which is state of the art and could be scaled further, and supports multiple image reconstruction modes. We evaluate the resource utilization of the FPGA and provide various quality metrics to ascertain the output image quality.

Simultaneous Azimuth and Fresnel Elevation Compounding: A Fast 3-D Imaging Technique for Crossed-Electrode Arrays

We have developed a new, fast, and simple 3-D imaging approach referred to as Simultaneous Azimuth and Fresnel Elevation (SAFE) compounding using a bias-sensitive crossed-electrode array. The principle behind this technique is to perform conventional plane-wave compounding with a back set of electrodes, while implementing a reconfigurable Fresnel elevation lens with an orthogonal set of front electrodes. While a Fresnel lens would usually result in unacceptable secondary lobe levels, these lobes can be suppressed by compounding different Fresnel patterns. The azimuthal and elevational planes can be simultaneously compounded to increase the beam quality with no loss in frame rate. A 10-MHz, $64 \times 64$ element crossed-electrode relaxor array was fabricated on an electrostrictive one-to-three composite substrate to demonstrate the SAFE compounding approach. The electrostrictive composite array has a measured electromechanical coupling coefficient ( $k_{t}$ ) of 0.62 with a bias voltage of 90 V and a measured two-way pulse bandwidth of 60%. The electrical impedance magnitude of array elements on resonance was measured to be $90~\Omega$ with a phase angle of -35°. Radiation patterns were simulated showing a -6-dB beamwidth of $330~\mu \text{m}$ with secondary lobe levels suppressed more than -60 dB in the azimuth dimension, and a -6-dB beamwidth of $450~\mu \text{m}$ with secondary lobe levels suppressed to -50 dB in the elevation dimension after 64 compounds. Experimental radiation patterns were collected and found to be in good agreement with simulations. Experimental 3-D images of wire phantoms were collected using a Verasonics experimental ultrasound system.

Ultrasound Open Platforms for Next-Generation Imaging Technique Development

Open platform (OP) ultrasound systems are aimed primarily at the research community. They have been at the forefront of the development of synthetic aperture, plane wave, shear wave elastography, and vector flow imaging. Such platforms are driven by a need for broad flexibility of parameters that are normally preset or fixed within clinical scanners. OP ultrasound scanners are defined to have three key features including customization of the transmit waveform, access to the prebeamformed receive data, and the ability to implement real-time imaging. In this paper, a formative discussion is given on the development of OPs from both the research community and the commercial sector. Both software- and hardware-based architectures are considered, and their specifications are compared in terms of resources and programmability. Software-based platforms capable of real-time beamforming generally make use of scalable graphics processing unit architectures, whereas a common feature of hardware-based platforms is the use of field-programmable gate array and digital signal processor devices to provide additional on-board processing capacity. OPs with extended number of channels (>256) are also discussed in relation to their role in supporting 3-D imaging technique development. With the increasing maturity of OP ultrasound scanners, the pace of advancement in ultrasound imaging algorithms is poised to be accelerated.
