Ultrasound Image Deconvolution Using Fundamental and Harmonic Images

Deconvolution based on sparsity and continuity improves the quality of ultrasound image

The application of ultrasound (US) image has been limited by its limited resolution, inherent speckle noise, and the impact of clutter and artifacts, especially in the miniaturized devices with restricted hardware conditions. In order to solve these problems, many researchers have explored a number of hardware modifications as well as algorithmic improvements, but further improvements in resolution, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast are still needed. In this paper, a deconvolution algorithm based on sparsity and continuity (DBSC) is proposed to obtain the higher resolution, SNR, and, contrast. The algorithm begins with a relatively bold Wiener filtering for initial enhancement of image resolution in preprocessing, but it also introduces ringing noise and compromises the SNR. In further processing, the noise is suppressed based on the characteristic that the adjacent pixels of the US image are continuous as long as Nyquist sampling criterion is met, and the extraction of high-frequency information is balanced by using relatively sparse. Subsequently, the theory and experiments demonstrate that relative sparsity and continuity are general properties of US images. DBSC is compared with other deconvolution strategies through simulations and experiments, and US imaging under different transmission channels is also investigated. The final results show that the proposed method can greatly improve the resolution, as well as provide significant advantages in terms of contrast and SNR, and is also feasible in applications to devices with limited hardware.

Current Advances in Computational Lung Ultrasound Imaging: A Review

In the field of biomedical imaging, ultrasonography has become common practice, and used as an important auxiliary diagnostic tool with unique advantages, such as being non-ionizing and often portable. This article reviews the state-of-the-art in medical ultrasound (US) image processing and in particular its applications in the examination of the lungs. First, we briefly introduce the basis of lung US (LUS) examination. We focus on (i) the characteristics of lung ultrasonography and (ii) its ability to detect a variety of diseases through the identification of various artifacts exhibiting on LUS images. We group medical US image computing methods into two categories: 1) model-based methods and 2) data-driven methods. We particularly discuss inverse problem-based methods exploited in US image despeckling, deconvolution, and line artifacts detection for the former, while we exemplify various works based on deep/machine learning (ML), which exploit various network architectures through supervised, weakly supervised, and unsupervised learning for the data-driven approaches.

Improving Image Quality by Deconvolution Recovery Filter in Ultrasound Imaging

Due to the advantages of non-radiation and real-time performance, ultrasound imaging is essential in medical imaging. Image quality is affected by the performance of the transducer in an ultrasound imaging system. For example, the bandwidth controls the pulse length, resulting in different axial resolutions. Therefore, a transducer with a large bandwidth helps to improve imaging quality. However, large bandwidths lead to increased system cost and sometimes a loss of sensitivity and lateral resolution in attenuating media. In this paper, a deconvolution recovery method combined with a frequency-domain filtering technique (DRF) is proposed to improve the imaging quality, especially for the axial resolution. In this method, the received low-bandwidth echo signals are converted into high-bandwidth signals, which is similar to the echo signals produced by a high-bandwidth transducer, and the imaging quality is improved. Simulation and experiment results show that, compared with Delay-and-sum (DAS) method, the DRF method improved axial resolution from 0.60 to 0.41 mm in simulation and from 0.62 to 0.47 mm in the tissue-mimicking phantom experiment. The contrast ratio performance is improved to some extent compared with the DAS in experimental and in-vivo images. Besides, the proposed method has the potential to further improve image quality by combining it with adaptive weightings, such as the minimum variance method.

Inverse Problem of Ultrasound Beamforming With Denoising-Based Regularized Solutions

During the past few years, inverse problem formulations of ultrasound beamforming have attracted growing interest. They usually pose beamforming as a minimization problem of a fidelity term resulting from the measurement model plus a regularization term that enforces a certain class on the resulting image. Here, we take advantage of alternating direction method of multipliers to propose a flexible framework in which each term is optimized separately. Furthermore, the proposed beamforming formulation is extended to replace the regularization term with a denoising algorithm, based on the recent approaches called plug-and-play (PnP) and regularization by denoising (RED). Such regularizations are shown in this work to better preserve speckle texture, an important feature in ultrasound imaging, than sparsity-based approaches previously proposed in the literature. The efficiency of the proposed methods is evaluated on simulations, real phantoms, and in vivo data available from a plane-wave imaging challenge in medical ultrasound. Furthermore, a comprehensive comparison with existing ultrasound beamforming methods is also provided. These results show that the RED algorithm gives the best image quality in terms of contrast index while preserving the speckle statistics.
