An efficient and high-quality scheme for cone-beam CT reconstruction from sparse-view data

Computed tomography (CT) is capable of generating detailed cross-sectional images of the scanned objects non-destructively. So far, CT has become an increasingly vital tool for 3D modelling of cultural relics. Compressed sensing (CS)-based CT reconstruction algorithms, such as the algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) regularized by total variation (TV), enable accurate reconstructions from sparse-view data, which consequently reduces both scanning time and costs. However, the implementation of the ART-TV is considerably slow, particularly in cone-beam reconstruction. In this paper, we propose an efficient and high-quality scheme for cone-beam CT reconstruction based on the traditional ART-TV algorithm. Our scheme employs Joseph's projection method for the computation of the system matrix. By exploiting the geometric symmetry of the cone-beam rays, we are able to compute the weight coefficients of the system matrix for two symmetric rays simultaneously. We then employ multi-threading technology to speed up the reconstruction of ART, and utilize graphics processing units (GPUs) to accelerate the TV minimization. Experimental results demonstrate that, for a typical reconstruction of a 512 × 512 × 512 volume from 60 views of 512 × 512 projection images, our scheme achieves a speedup of 14 × compared to a single-threaded CPU implementation. Furthermore, high-quality reconstructions of ART-TV are obtained by using Joseph's projection compared with that using traditional Siddon's projection.

A Survey of Designs for Combined 2D+3D Visual Representations

We examine visual representations of data that make use of combinations of both 2D and 3D data mappings. Combining 2D and 3D representations is a common technique that allows viewers to understand multiple facets of the data with which they are interacting. While 3D representations focus on the spatial character of the data or the dedicated 3D data mapping, 2D representations often show abstract data properties and take advantage of the unique benefits of mapping to a plane. Many systems have used unique combinations of both types of data mappings effectively. Yet there are no systematic reviews of the methods in linking 2D and 3D representations. We systematically survey the relationships between 2D and 3D visual representations in major visualization publications-IEEE VIS, IEEE TVCG, and EuroVis-from 2012 to 2022. We closely examined 105 articles where 2D and 3D representations are connected visually, interactively, or through animation. These approaches are designed based on their visual environment, the relationships between their visual representations, and their possible layouts. Through our analysis, we introduce a design space as well as provide design guidelines for effectively linking 2D and 3D visual representations.

Volume Exploration Using Multidimensional Bhattacharyya Flow

We present a novel approach for volume exploration that is versatile yet effective in isolating semantic structures in both noisy and clean data. Specifically, we describe a hierarchical active contours approach based on Bhattacharyya gradient flow which is easier to control, robust to noise, and can incorporate various types of statistical information to drive an edge-agnostic exploration process. To facilitate a time-bound user-driven volume exploration process that is applicable to a wide variety of data sources, we present an efficient multi-GPU implementation that (1) is approximately 400 times faster than a single thread CPU implementation, (2) allows hierarchical exploration of 2D and 3D images, (3) supports customization through multidimensional attribute spaces, and (4) is applicable to a variety of data sources and semantic structures. The exploration system follows a 2-step process. It first applies active contours to isolate semantically meaningful subsets of the volume. It then applies transfer functions to the isolated regions locally to produce clear and clutter-free visualizations. We show the effectiveness of our approach in isolating and visualizing structures-of-interest without needing any specialized segmentation methods on a variety of data sources, including 3D optical microscopy, multi-channel optical volumes, abdominal and chest CT, micro-CT, MRI, simulation, and synthetic data. We also gathered feedback from a medical trainee regarding the usefulness of our approach and discussion on potential applications in clinical workflows.

FeatureLego: Volume Exploration Using Exhaustive Clustering of Super-Voxels

We present a volume exploration framework, FeatureLego, that uses a novel voxel clustering approach for efficient selection of semantic features. We partition the input volume into a set of compact super-voxels that represent the finest selection granularity. We then perform an exhaustive clustering of these super-voxels using a graph-based clustering method. Unlike the prevalent brute-force parameter sampling approaches, we propose an efficient algorithm to perform this exhaustive clustering. By computing an exhaustive set of clusters, we aim to capture as many boundaries as possible and ensure that the user has sufficient options for efficiently selecting semantically relevant features. Furthermore, we merge all the computed clusters into a single tree of meta-clusters that can be used for hierarchical exploration. We implement an intuitive user-interface to interactively explore volumes using our clustering approach. Finally, we show the effectiveness of our framework on multiple real-world datasets of different modalities.

Visualization of Bubble Formation in Porous Media

We present a visualization approach for the analysis of CO2 bubble-induced attenuation in porous rock formations. As a basis for this, we introduce customized techniques to extract CO2 bubbles and their surrounding porous structure from X-ray computed tomography data (XCT) measurements. To understand how the structure of porous media influences the occurrence and the shape of formed bubbles, we automatically classify and relate them in terms of morphology and geometric features, and further directly support searching for promising porous structures. To allow for the meaningful direct visual comparison of bubbles and their structures, we propose a customized registration technique considering the bubble shape as well as its points of contact with the porous media surface. With our quantitative extraction of geometric bubble features, we further support the analysis as well as the creation of a physical model. We demonstrate that our approach was successfully used to answer several research questions in the domain, and discuss its high practical relevance to identify critical seismic characteristics of fluid-saturated rock that govern its capability to store CO2.

Visualizing Confidence in Cluster-Based Ensemble Weather Forecast Analyses

In meteorology, cluster analysis is frequently used to determine representative trends in ensemble weather predictions in a selected spatio-temporal region, e.g., to reduce a set of ensemble members to simplify and improve their analysis. Identified clusters (i.e., groups of similar members), however, can be very sensitive to small changes of the selected region, so that clustering results can be misleading and bias subsequent analyses. In this article, we - a team of visualization scientists and meteorologists-deliver visual analytics solutions to analyze the sensitivity of clustering results with respect to changes of a selected region. We propose an interactive visual interface that enables simultaneous visualization of a) the variation in composition of identified clusters (i.e., their robustness), b) the variability in cluster membership for individual ensemble members, and c) the uncertainty in the spatial locations of identified trends. We demonstrate that our solution shows meteorologists how representative a clustering result is, and with respect to which changes in the selected region it becomes unstable. Furthermore, our solution helps to identify those ensemble members which stably belong to a given cluster and can thus be considered similar. In a real-world application case we show how our approach is used to analyze the clustering behavior of different regions in a forecast of "Tropical Cyclone Karl", guiding the user towards the cluster robustness information required for subsequent ensemble analysis.
