Intrinsic and Isotropic Resampling for 3D Point Clouds

With rapid development of 3D scanning technology, 3D point cloud based research and applications are becoming more popular. However, major difficulties are still exist which affect the performance of point cloud utilization. Such difficulties include lack of local adjacency information, non-uniform point density, and control of point numbers. In this paper, we propose a two-step intrinsic and isotropic (I&I) resampling framework to address the challenge of these three major difficulties. The efficient intrinsic control provides geodesic measurement for a point cloud to improve local region detection and avoids redundant geodesic calculation. Then the geometrically-optimized resampling uses a geometric update process to optimize a point cloud into an isotropic or adaptively-isotropic one. The point cloud density can be adjusted to global uniform (isotropic) or local uniform with geometric feature keeping (being adaptively isotropic). The point cloud number can be controlled based on application requirement or user-specification. Experiments show that our point cloud resampling framework achieves outstanding performance in different applications: point cloud simplification, mesh reconstruction and shape registration. Fast variable density Poisson-disc sample generation with directional variation for compressed sensing in MRI

We present a fast method for generating random samples according to a variable density poisson-disc distribution. A minimum parameter value is used to create a background grid array for keeping track of those points that might affect any new candidate point; this reduces the number of conflicts that must be checked before acceptance of a new point, thus reducing the number of computations required. We demonstrate the algorithm's ability to generate variable density poisson-disc sampling patterns according to a parameterized function, including patterns where the variations in density are a function of direction. We further show that these sampling patterns are appropriate for compressed sensing applications. Finally, we present a method to generate patterns with a specific acceleration rate.

Craniofacial reconstruction evaluation by geodesic network

Craniofacial reconstruction is to estimate an individual's face model from its skull. It has a widespread application in forensic medicine, archeology, medical cosmetic surgery, and so forth. However, little attention is paid to the evaluation of craniofacial reconstruction. This paper proposes an objective method to evaluate globally and locally the reconstructed craniofacial faces based on the geodesic network. Firstly, the geodesic networks of the reconstructed craniofacial face and the original face are built, respectively, by geodesics and isogeodesics, whose intersections are network vertices. Then, the absolute value of the correlation coefficient of the features of all corresponding geodesic network vertices between two models is taken as the holistic similarity, where the weighted average of the shape index values in a neighborhood is defined as the feature of each network vertex. Moreover, the geodesic network vertices of each model are divided into six subareas, that is, forehead, eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, and chin, and the local similarity is measured for each subarea. Experiments using 100 pairs of reconstructed craniofacial faces and their corresponding original faces show that the evaluation by our method is roughly consistent with the subjective evaluation derived from thirty-five persons in five groups.
