Towards Dataset-Scale and Feature-Oriented Evaluation of Text Summarization in Large Language Model Prompts

Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) and Prompt Engineering have made chatbot customization more accessible, significantly reducing barriers to tasks that previously required programming skills. However, prompt evaluation, especially at the dataset scale, remains complex due to the need to assess prompts across thousands of test instances within a dataset. Our study, based on a comprehensive literature review and pilot study, summarized five critical challenges in prompt evaluation. In response, we introduce a feature-oriented workflow for systematic prompt evaluation. In the context of text summarization, our workflow advocates evaluation with summary characteristics (feature metrics) such as complexity, formality, or naturalness, instead of using traditional quality metrics like ROUGE. This design choice enables a more user-friendly evaluation of prompts, as it guides users in sorting through the ambiguity inherent in natural language. To support this workflow, we introduce Awesum, a visual analytics system that facilitates identifying optimal prompt refinements for text summarization through interactive visualizations, featuring a novel Prompt Comparator design that employs a BubbleSet-inspired design enhanced by dimensionality reduction techniques. We evaluate the effectiveness and general applicability of the system with practitioners from various domains and found that (1) our design helps overcome the learning curve for non-technical people to conduct a systematic evaluation of summarization prompts, and (2) our feature-oriented workflow has the potential to generalize to other NLG and image-generation tasks. For future works, we advocate moving towards feature-oriented evaluation of LLM prompts and discuss unsolved challenges in terms of human-agent interaction.

Enhancing Static Charts With Data-Driven Animations

Static visual attributes such as color and shape are used with great success in visual charts designed to be displayed in static, hard-copy form. However, nowadays digital displays become ubiquitous in the visualization of any form of data, lifting the confines of static presentations. In this article, we propose incorporating data-driven animations to bring static charts to life, with the purpose of encoding and emphasizing certain attributes of the data. We lay out a design space for data-driven animated effects and experiment with three versatile effects, marching ants, geometry deformation and gradual appearance. For each, we provide practical details regarding their mode of operation and extent of interaction with existing visual encodings. We examine the impact and effectiveness of our enhancements through an empirical user study to assess preference as well as gauge the influence of animated effects on human perception in terms of speed and accuracy of visual understanding.

Compass: Towards Better Causal Analysis of Urban Time Series

The spatial time series generated by city sensors allow us to observe urban phenomena like environmental pollution and traffic congestion at an unprecedented scale. However, recovering causal relations from these observations to explain the sources of urban phenomena remains a challenging task because these causal relations tend to be time-varying and demand proper time series partitioning for effective analyses. The prior approaches extract one causal graph given long-time observations, which cannot be directly applied to capturing, interpreting, and validating dynamic urban causality. This paper presents Compass, a novel visual analytics approach for in-depth analyses of the dynamic causality in urban time series. To develop Compass, we identify and address three challenges: detecting urban causality, interpreting dynamic causal relations, and unveiling suspicious causal relations. First, multiple causal graphs over time among urban time series are obtained with a causal detection framework extended from the Granger causality test. Then, a dynamic causal graph visualization is designed to reveal the time-varying causal relations across these causal graphs and facilitate the exploration of the graphs along the time. Finally, a tailored multi-dimensional visualization is developed to support the identification of spurious causal relations, thereby improving the reliability of causal analyses. The effectiveness of Compass is evaluated with two case studies conducted on the real-world urban datasets, including the air pollution and traffic speed datasets, and positive feedback was received from domain experts.

QuteVis: Visually Studying Transportation Patterns Using Multisketch Query of Joint Traffic Situations

QuteVis uses multisketch query and visualization to discover specific times and days in history with specified joint traffic patterns at different city locations. Users can use touch input devices to define, edit, and modify multiple sketches on a city map. A set of visualizations and interactions is provided to help users browse and compare retrieved traffic situations and discover potential influential factors. QuteVis is built upon a transport database that integrates heterogeneous data sources with an optimized spatial indexing and weighted similarity computation. An evaluation with real-world data and domain experts demonstrates that QuteVis is useful in urban transportation applications in modern cities.

Integrating Geovisual Analytics with Machine Learning for Human Mobility Pattern Discovery

Understanding human movement patterns is of fundamental importance in transportation planning and management. We propose to examine complex public transit travel patterns over a large-scale transit network, which is challenging since it involves thousands of transit passengers and massive data from heterogeneous sources. Additionally, efficient representation and visualization of discovered travel patterns is difficult given a large number of transit trips. To address these challenges, this study leverages advanced machine learning methods to identify time-varying mobility patterns based on smart card data and other urban data. The proposed approach delivers a comprehensive solution to pre-process, analyze, and visualize complex public transit travel patterns. This approach first fuses smart card data with other urban data to reconstruct original transit trips. We use two machine learning methods, including a clustering algorithm to extract transit corridors to represent primary mobility connections between different regions and a graph-embedding algorithm to discover hierarchical mobility community structures. We also devise compact and effective multi-scale visualization forms to represent the discovered travel behavior dynamics. An interactive web-based mapping prototype is developed to integrate advanced machine learning methods with specific visualizations to characterize transit travel behavior patterns and to enable visual exploration of transit mobility patterns at different scales and resolutions over space and time. The proposed approach is evaluated using multi-source big transit data (e.g., smart card data, transit network data, and bus trajectory data) collected in Shenzhen City, China. Evaluation of our prototype demonstrates that the proposed visual analytics approach offers a scalable and effective solution for discovering meaningful travel patterns across large metropolitan areas.

Diverse Visualization Techniques and Methods of Moving-Object-Trajectory Data: A Review

Trajectory big data have significant applications in many areas, such as traffic management, urban planning and military reconnaissance. Traditional visualization methods, which are represented by contour maps, shading maps and hypsometric maps, are mainly based on the spatiotemporal information of trajectories, which can macroscopically study the spatiotemporal conditions of the entire trajectory set and microscopically analyze the individual movement of each trajectory; such methods are widely used in screen display and flat mapping. With the improvement of trajectory data quality, these data can generally describe information in the spatial and temporal dimensions and involve many other attributes (e.g., speed, orientation, and elevation) with large data amounts and high dimensions. Additionally, these data have relatively complicated internal relationships and regularities, whose analysis could cause many troubles; the traditional approaches can no longer fully meet the requirements of visualizing trajectory data and mining hidden information. Therefore, diverse visualization methods that present the value of massive trajectory information are currently a hot research topic. This paper summarizes the research status of trajectory data-visualization techniques in recent years and extracts common contemporary trajectory data-visualization methods to comprehensively cognize and understand the fundamental characteristics and diverse achievements of trajectory-data visualization.

FiberClay: Sculpting Three Dimensional Trajectories to Reveal Structural Insights

Visualizing 3D trajectories to extract insights about their similarities and spatial configuration is a critical task in several domains. Air traffic controllers for example deal with large quantities of aircrafts routes to optimize safety in airspace and neuroscientists attempt to understand neuronal pathways in the human brain by visualizing bundles of fibers from DTI images. Extracting insights from masses of 3D trajectories is challenging as the multiple three dimensional lines have complex geometries, may overlap, cross or even merge with each other, making it impossible to follow individual ones in dense areas. As trajectories are inherently spatial and three dimensional, we propose FiberClay: a system to display and interact with 3D trajectories in immersive environments. FiberClay renders a large quantity of trajectories in real time using GP-GPU techniques. FiberClay also introduces a new set of interactive techniques for composing complex queries in 3D space leveraging immersive environment controllers and user position. These techniques enable an analyst to select and compare sets of trajectories with specific geometries and data properties. We conclude by discussing insights found using FiberClay with domain experts in air traffic control and neurology.

TPFlow: Progressive Partition and Multidimensional Pattern Extraction for Large-Scale Spatio-Temporal Data Analysis

Consider a multi-dimensional spatio-temporal (ST) dataset where each entry is a numerical measure defined by the corresponding temporal, spatial and other domain-specific dimensions. A typical approach to explore such data utilizes interactive visualizations with multiple coordinated views. Each view displays the aggregated measures along one or two dimensions. By brushing on the views, analysts can obtain detailed information. However, this approach often cannot provide sufficient guidance for analysts to identify patterns hidden within subsets of data. Without a priori hypotheses, analysts need to manually select and iterate through different slices to search for patterns, which can be a tedious and lengthy process. In this work, we model multidimensional ST data as tensors and propose a novel piecewise rank-one tensor decomposition algorithm which supports automatically slicing the data into homogeneous partitions and extracting the latent patterns in each partition for comparison and visual summarization. The algorithm optimizes a quantitative measure about how faithfully the extracted patterns visually represent the original data. Based on the algorithm we further propose a visual analytics framework that supports a top-down, progressive partitioning workflow for level-of-detail multidimensional ST data exploration. We demonstrate the general applicability and effectiveness of our technique on three datasets from different application domains: regional sales trend analysis, customer traffic analysis in department stores, and taxi trip analysis with origin-destination (OD) data. We further interview domain experts to verify the usability of the prototype.
