Blowing Seeds Across Gardens: Visualizing Implicit Propagation of Cross-Platform Social Media Posts

Propagation analysis refers to studying how information spreads on social media, a pivotal endeavor for understanding social sentiment and public opinions. Numerous studies contribute to visualizing information spread, but few have considered the implicit and complex diffusion patterns among multiple platforms. To bridge the gap, we summarize cross-platform diffusion patterns with experts and identify significant factors that dissect the mechanisms of cross-platform information spread. Based on that, we propose an information diffusion model that estimates the likelihood of a topic/post spreading among different social media platforms. Moreover, we propose a novel visual metaphor that encapsulates cross-platform propagation in a manner analogous to the spread of seeds across gardens. Specifically, we visualize platforms, posts, implicit cross-platform routes, and salient instances as elements of a virtual ecosystem - gardens, flowers, winds, and seeds, respectively. We further develop a visual analytic system, namely BloomWind, that enables users to quickly identify the cross-platform diffusion patterns and investigate the relevant social media posts. Ultimately, we demonstrate the usage of BloomWind through two case studies and validate its effectiveness using expert interviews.

Survey on Visual Analysis of Event Sequence Data

Event sequence data record series of discrete events in the time order of occurrence. They are commonly observed in a variety of applications ranging from electronic health records to network logs, with the characteristics of large-scale, high-dimensional and heterogeneous. This high complexity of event sequence data makes it difficult for analysts to manually explore and find patterns, resulting in ever-increasing needs for computational and perceptual aids from visual analytics techniques to extract and communicate insights from event sequence datasets. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art visual analytics approaches, characterize them with our proposed design space, and categorize them based on analytical tasks and applications. From our review of relevant literature, we have also identified several remaining research challenges and future research opportunities.

Role of twitter user profile features in retweet prediction for big data streams

To study the various factors influencing the process of information sharing on Twitter is a very active research area. This paper aims to explore the impact of numerical features extracted from user profiles in retweet prediction from the real-time raw feed of tweets. The originality of this work comes from the fact that the proposed model is based on simple numerical features with the least computational complexity, which is a scalable solution for big data analysis. This research work proposes three new features from the tweet author profile to capture the unique behavioral pattern of the user, namely "Author total activity", "Author total activity per year", and "Author tweets per year". The features set is tested on a dataset of 100 million random tweets collected through Twitter API. The binary labels regression gave an accuracy of 0.98 for user-profile features and gave an accuracy of 0.99 when combined with tweet content features. The regression analysis to predict the retweet count gave an R-squared value of 0.98 with combined features. The multi-label classification gave an accuracy of 0.9 for combined features and 0.89 for user-profile features. The user profile features performed better than tweet content features and performed even better when combined. This model is suitable for near real-time analysis of live streaming data coming through Twitter API and provides a baseline pattern of user behavior based on numerical features available from user profiles only.

A Visual Approach for the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) Outbreak Data Analysis

Virus outbreaks are threats to humanity, and coronaviruses are the latest of many epidemics in the last few decades in the world. SARS-CoV (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Associated Coronavirus) is a member of the coronavirus family, so its study is useful for relevant virus data research. In this work, we conduct a proposed approach that is non-medical/clinical, generate graphs from five features of the SARS outbreak data in five countries and regions, and offer insights from a visual analysis perspective. The results show that prevention measures such as quarantine are the most common control policies used, and areas with strict measures did have fewer peak period days; for instance, Hong Kong handled the outbreak better than other areas. Data conflict issues found with this approach are discussed as well. Visual analysis is also proved to be a useful technique to present the SARS outbreak data at this stage; furthermore, we are proceeding to apply a similar methodology with more features to future COVID-19 research from a visual analysis perfective.
