CSLens: Towards Better Deploying Charging Stations via Visual Analytics - a Coupled Networks Perspective

In recent years, the global adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has surged, prompting a corresponding rise in the installation of charging stations. This proliferation has underscored the importance of expediting the deployment of charging infrastructure. Both academia and industry have thus devoted to addressing the charging station location problem (CSLP) to streamline this process. However, prevailing algorithms addressing CSLP are hampered by restrictive assumptions and computational overhead, leading to a dearth of comprehensive evaluations in the spatiotemporal dimensions. Consequently, their practical viability is restricted. Moreover, the placement of charging stations exerts a significant impact on both the road network and the power grid, which necessitates the evaluation of the potential post-deployment impacts on these interconnected networks holistically. In this study, we propose CSLens, a visual analytics system designed to inform charging station deployment decisions through the lens of coupled transportation and power networks. CSLens offers multiple visualizations and interactive features, empowering users to delve into the existing charging station layout, explore alternative deployment solutions, and assess the ensuring impact. To validate the efficacy of CSLens, we conducted two case studies and engaged in interviews with domain experts. Through these efforts, we substantiated the usability and practical utility of CSLens in enhancing the decision-making process surrounding charging station deployment. Our findings underscore CSLens's potential to serve as a valuable asset in navigating the complexities of charging infrastructure planning.

V4RIN: visual analysis of regional industry network with domain knowledge

The regional industry network (RIN) is a type of financial network derived from industry networks that possess the capability to describe the connections between specific industries within a particular region. For most investors and financial analysts lacking extensive experience, the decision-support information provided by industry networks may be too vague. Conversely, RINs express more detailed and specific industry connections both within and outside the region. As RIN analysis is domain-specific and current financial network analysis tools are designed for generalized analytical tasks and cannot be directly applied to RINs, new visual analysis approaches are needed to enhance information exploration efficiency. In this study, we collaborated with domain experts and proposed V4RIN, an interactive visualization analysis system that integrates predefined domain knowledge and data processing methods to support users in uploading custom data. Through multiple views in the system panel, users can comprehensively explore the structure, geographical distribution, and spatiotemporal variations of the RIN. Two case studies were conducted and a set of expert interviews with five domain experts to validate the usability and reliability of our system.

Exploring Descriptions of Movement Through Geovisual Analytics

Sensemaking using automatically extracted information from text is a challenging problem. In this paper, we address a specific type of information extraction, namely extracting information related to descriptions of movement. Aggregating and understanding information related to descriptions of movement and lack of movement specified in text can lead to an improved understanding and sensemaking of movement phenomena of various types, e.g., migration of people and animals, impediments to travel due to COVID-19, etc. We present GeoMovement, a system that is based on combining machine learning and rule-based extraction of movement-related information with state-of-the-art visualization techniques. Along with the depiction of movement, our tool can extract and present a lack of movement. Very little prior work exists on automatically extracting descriptions of movement, especially negation and movement. Apart from addressing these, GeoMovement also provides a novel integrated framework for combining these extraction modules with visualization. We include two systematic case studies of GeoMovement that show how humans can derive meaningful geographic movement information. GeoMovement can complement precise movement data, e.g., obtained using sensors, or be used by itself when precise data is unavailable.
