STNet: An End-to-End Generative Framework for Synthesizing Spatiotemporal Super-Resolution Volumes

StyleRF-VolVis: Style Transfer of Neural Radiance Fields for Expressive Volume Visualization

In volume visualization, visualization synthesis has attracted much attention due to its ability to generate novel visualizations without following the conventional rendering pipeline. However, existing solutions based on generative adversarial networks often require many training images and take significant training time. Still, issues such as low quality, consistency, and flexibility persist. This paper introduces StyleRF-VolVis, an innovative style transfer framework for expressive volume visualization (VolVis) via neural radiance field (NeRF). The expressiveness of StyleRF-VolVis is upheld by its ability to accurately separate the underlying scene geometry (i.e., content) and color appearance (i.e., style), conveniently modify color, opacity, and lighting of the original rendering while maintaining visual content consistency across the views, and effectively transfer arbitrary styles from reference images to the reconstructed 3D scene. To achieve these, we design a base NeRF model for scene geometry extraction, a palette color network to classify regions of the radiance field for photorealistic editing, and an unrestricted color network to lift the color palette constraint via knowledge distillation for non-photorealistic editing. We demonstrate the superior quality, consistency, and flexibility of StyleRF-VolVis by experimenting with various volume rendering scenes and reference images and comparing StyleRF-VolVis against other image-based (AdaIN), video-based (ReReVST), and NeRF-based (ARF and SNeRF) style rendering solutions.

KD-INR: Time-Varying Volumetric Data Compression via Knowledge Distillation-Based Implicit Neural Representation

Traditional deep learning algorithms assume that all data is available during training, which presents challenges when handling large-scale time-varying data. To address this issue, we propose a data reduction pipeline called knowledge distillation-based implicit neural representation (KD-INR) for compressing large-scale time-varying data. The approach consists of two stages: spatial compression and model aggregation. In the first stage, each time step is compressed using an implicit neural representation with bottleneck layers and features of interest preservation-based sampling. In the second stage, we utilize an offline knowledge distillation algorithm to extract knowledge from the trained models and aggregate it into a single model. We evaluated our approach on a variety of time-varying volumetric data sets. Both quantitative and qualitative results, such as PSNR, LPIPS, and rendered images, demonstrate that KD-INR surpasses the state-of-the-art approaches, including learning-based (i.e., CoordNet, NeurComp, and SIREN) and lossy compression (i.e., SZ3, ZFP, and TTHRESH) methods, at various compression ratios ranging from hundreds to ten thousand.

Interactive Volume Visualization via Multi-Resolution Hash Encoding Based Neural Representation

Implicit neural networks have demonstrated immense potential in compressing volume data for visualization. However, despite their advantages, the high costs of training and inference have thus far limited their application to offline data processing and non-interactive rendering. In this article, we present a novel solution that leverages modern GPU tensor cores, a well-implemented CUDA machine learning framework, an optimized global-illumination-capable volume rendering algorithm, and a suitable acceleration data structure to enable real-time direct ray tracing of volumetric neural representations. Our approach produces high-fidelity neural representations with a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) exceeding 30 dB, while reducing their size by up to three orders of magnitude. Remarkably, we show that the entire training step can fit within a rendering loop, bypassing the need for pre-training. Additionally, we introduce an efficient out-of-core training strategy to support extreme-scale volume data, making it possible for our volumetric neural representation training to scale up to terascale on a workstation with an NVIDIA RTX 3090 GPU. Our method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art techniques in terms of training time, reconstruction quality, and rendering performance, making it an ideal choice for applications where fast and accurate visualization of large-scale volume data is paramount.

CVANet: Cascaded visual attention network for single image super-resolution

Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have exhibited excellent feature extraction and detail reconstruction capabilities for single image super-resolution (SISR). Nevertheless, most previous DCNN-based methods do not fully utilize the complementary strengths between feature maps, channels, and pixels. Therefore, it hinders the ability of DCNNs to represent abundant features. To tackle the aforementioned issues, we present a Cascaded Visual Attention Network for SISR called CVANet, which simulates the visual attention mechanism of the human eyes to focus on the reconstruction process of details. Specifically, we first designed a trainable feature attention module (FAM) for feature-level attention learning. Afterward, we introduce a channel attention module (CAM) to reinforce feature maps under channel-level attention learning. Meanwhile, we propose a pixel attention module (PAM) that adaptively selects representative features from the previous layers, which are utilized to generate a high-resolution image. Satisfactory, our CVANet can effectively improve the resolution of images by exploring the feature representation capabilities of different modules and the visual perception properties of the human eyes. Extensive experiments with different methods on four benchmarks demonstrate that our CVANet outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods in subjective visual perception, PSNR, and SSIM.The code will be made available https://github.com/WilyZhao8/CVANet.
