The predictive value of red cell distribution width on erectile dysfunction

Association between red cell distribution width and erectile dysfunction: A cross-sectional study using NHANES 2001-2004 data

Red cell distribution width (RDW), a widely used and non-invasive biomarker of systemic inflammation, has been linked to various inflammatory conditions, including erectile dysfunction (ED). This study investigates the relationship between RDW and other inflammation-associated biomarkers with ED, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2001 and 2004. The analysis included 3988 participants, with 29.46 % classified as having ED. Biomarkers such as RDW, monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were evaluated. Methods included multivariable logistic regression, subgroup analysis, generalized additive models (GAM), and smoothed curve fitting to explore associations. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to assess diagnostic capabilities. Results showed significant positive associations between ED and RDW, MLR, NLR, and SIRI, with nonlinear relationships identified. RDW demonstrated the highest diagnostic accuracy for distinguishing ED (AUC = 0.66, 95 % CI: 0.65-0.68), outperforming other biomarkers. The study concludes that RDW is independently associated with ED, offering cost-effectiveness, non-invasiveness, and high diagnostic accuracy, making it a promising biomarker for ED assessment strategies.

Concentrations of Bioelements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Mg, Mn) in Serum and Bone Tissue of Aging Men Undergoing Hip Arthroplasty: Implications for Erectile Dysfunction

Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) stands out as one of the most prevalent sexual disorders in men, with its incidence progressively escalating with age. As delineated by the International Consultation Committee for Sexual Medicine on Definitions/Epidemiology/Risk Factors for Sexual Dysfunction, the prevalence of ED among men under 40 years is estimated to be within the range of 1-10%. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the concentration of bioelements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Mg, and Mn) in the serum and bone tissue and the concentration of selected hormones in men with and without erectile dysfunction. Materials and methods: The retrospective cohort study included 152 men who underwent total hip arthroplasty for hip osteoarthritis at the Department of Orthopaedic Traumatology and Musculoskeletal Oncology at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. Certain exclusion criteria were applied to ensure the integrity of the study. These included individuals with diabetes, a history of cancer, alcohol abuse, liver or kidney failure, New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III or IV heart failure, and those taking medications that affect bone metabolism, such as mineral supplements, neuroleptics, chemotherapeutic agents, immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, or antidepressants. Patients with hypogonadism or infertility were excluded from the study. Results: The study showed an association between bioT concentrations and Cu concentrations in both patients with and without erectile dysfunction. A correlation between bioactive testosterone and Cr concentrations was also observed in both groups. Patients with erectile dysfunction showed a relationship between bioT concentration and Zn concentration, TT concentration and Mn concentration, FT concentration and Zn concentration, and E2 concentration and Cr concentration. An analysis of elemental concentrations in bone tissue showed an association between FT and Mg and Mn concentrations, but only in patients with erectile dysfunction. In patients without erectile dysfunction, a correlation was observed between FT and Cu concentrations. A correlation was also observed between bioT concentrations and Mg, Mn, and Zn concentrations, but only in patients with erectile dysfunction. In patients without erectile dysfunction, a correlation was observed between bioT and Cu concentrations. Conclusions: Studying the relationship between the concentration of bioelements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Mg, and Mn) in the serum and bone tissue and the concentration of selected hormones in men may be important in explaining the etiology of the problem. The study of the concentration of Zn and Cu in bone tissue and serum showed that these two elements, regardless of the place of accumulation, may be related to the concentration of androgens in men.

Diagnostic work up: Laboratory and biomarkers

This chapter will focus on the diagnostic work around sexual dysfunction in Parkinson's disease, especially laboratory tests and biomarkers. A number of methods to analyze if sexual dysfunction is caused by neural pathology, vascular dysfunction or other mechanisms are now available. Other methods can be used to differentiate between psychogenic/functional reasons behind sexual dysfunction and organic ones. The role of biomarkers for diagnosis, but also for understanding the reason behind and for counteracting sexual dysfunction is becoming more evident. There is also a rich and increasing number of scales and other instruments available for detecting and quantifying sexual hypo- and hyperactivity. When investigating the reason behind sexual dysfunction in patients with Parkinson's disease comorbidities should also be considered. Finally, early and pronounced sexual dysfunction might in some cases be an indication that differential diagnosis, like Multisystem Atrophy, should be thought about. All these aspects of the diagnostic procedures around sexual dysfunction in Parkinson's disease will be covered in this chapter.

Red blood cell distribution width values in erectile dysfunction

PURPOSE

Erectile dysfunction (ED) has increased prevalence by age and significantly affects the quality of life of men and their partners. To investigate the relationship between ED and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) values.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

Between September 2019 and December 2019, a total of 192 individuals comprising those that were admitted to the urology outpatient clinic with ED complaints and healthy volunteers from among hospital staff were prospectively included in the study. The participants were divided into two groups according to the international erectile function index (IIEF-5) as ED group (n=148) and control group (n=44).

RESULTS

There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of age, smoking status, presence of hypertension, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, total prostate-specific antigen and haematocrit values. Body mass index, fasting blood sugar, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were significantly higher in the ED group (28.5±27.4kg/m² vs 26.8±26.5kg/m², p=.021, 109.05±49.7mg/dl vs 93.39±10.2mg/dl, p<.001, 2.18±1.3 vs 1.74±0.3, p=.031, and 113.7±47 vs 92.4±24.1, p=.004, respectively). The mean RDW values were 13.7±1.1 in the ED group and 13±0.5 in the control group (p<.001). The multivariate analysis revealed PLR [1.02 OR (1-1.04), p=.007] and RDW [2.75 OR (1.56-4.85), p<.001] as independent predictors for an ED diagnosis.

CONCLUSION

Based on the strong relationship between RDW and ED, we consider that RDW may be a new indicator in the diagnosis of ED.
