The evolution of division of labour: preconditions and evolutionary feedback

Division of Labour (DoL) among group members reflects the pinnacle of social complexity. The synergistic effects created by task specialization and the sharing of duties benefitting the group raise the efficiency of the acquisition, use, management and defence of resources by a fundamental step above the potential of individual agents. At the same time, it may stabilize societies because of the involved interdependence among collaborators. Here, I review the conditions associated with the emergence of DoL, which include the existence of (i) sizeable groups with enduring membership; (ii) individual specialization improving the efficiency of task performance; and (iii) low conflict of interest among group members owing to correlated payoffs. This results in (iv) a combination of intra-individual consistency with inter-individual variance in carrying out different tasks, which creates (v) some degree of mutual interdependence among group members. DoL typically evolves 'bottom-up' without external regulatory forces, but the latter may gain importance at a later stage of the evolution of social complexity. Owing to the involved feedback processes, cause and effect are often difficult to disentangle in the evolutionary trajectory towards structured societies with well-developed DoL among their members. Nevertheless, the emergence of task specialization and DoL may entail a one-way street towards social complexity, with retrogression getting increasingly difficult the more individual agents depend on each other at progressing stages of social evolution.This article is part of the theme issue 'Division of labour as key driver of social evolution'.

Sexual Offspring Production by Acorn Ant Temnothorax crassispinus Colonies Is Associated with the Colony Size but Not with the Volume of the Nest Cavity

Nest sites are important for ants, as the nests provide refuge against enemies and ensure optimal conditions for the brood development. As the construction of a nest is a time and energy consuming activity, many ant species dwell in ready-for-use cavities. For them, choosing a good nest site is important, as the quality of nest site could affect factors such as the energy allocation and production of sexual individuals. Ants of genus Temnothorax inhabit cavities in, e.g., acorns and twigs, and these ant colonies prefer larger cavities as nest sites. It was previously shown that colonies inhabiting more durable nest sites invested more resources in sexual production. The aim of this study was to find out whether the volume of a nest cavity influences the sexual offspring production of acorn ant Temnothorax crassispinus colonies. For this purpose, a three-month long laboratory experiment was performed. Colonies of the Temnothorax ant were kept in artificial nest cavities differing in volume. It was found that there was no correlation between the productivity per capita and the colony size. More populous colonies produced more sexual individuals; however, we found no statistical difference in the production of sexual individuals between the colonies that inhabited cavities of different volumes.

The evolution of morphological castes under decoupled control

Eusociality, where units that previously reproduced independently function as one entity, is of major interest in evolutionary biology. Obligate eusociality is characterized by morphologically differentiated castes and reduced conflict. We explore conditions under which morphological castes may arise in the Hymenoptera and factors constraining their evolution. Control over offspring morphology and behaviour seems likely to be decoupled. Provisioners (queens and workers) can influence offspring morphology directly through the nutrition they provide, while adult offspring control their own behaviour. Provisioners may, however, influence worker behaviour indirectly if offspring modify their behaviour in response to their morphology. If manipulation underlies helping, we should not see helping evolve before specialized worker morphology, yet empirical observations suggest that behavioural castes precede morphological castes. We use evolutionary invasion analyses to show how the evolution of a morphologically differentiated worker caste depends on the prior presence of a behavioural caste: specialist worker morphology will be mismatched with behaviour unless some offspring already choose to work. A mother's certainty about her offspring's behaviour is also critical-less certainty results in greater mismatch. We show how baseline worker productivity can affect the likelihood of a morphological trait being favoured by natural selection. We then show how under a decoupled control scenario, morphologically differentiated castes should be less and less likely to be lost as they become more specialized. We also suggest that for eusociality to be evolutionarily irreversible, workers must be unable to functionally replace reproductives and reproductives must be unable to reproduce without help from workers.

Self-complexification through integral feedback in eusocial paper wasps of various levels of sociality

We investigate how simple physical interactions can generate remarkable diversity in the life history of social agents using data of social wasps, yielding complex scalable task partitioning. We built and analyzed a computational model to investigate how diverse task allocation patterns found in nature can emerge from the same behavioral blueprint. Self-organizing mechanisms of interwoven behavioral feedback loops, task-dependent time delays and simple material flows between interacting individuals yield an emergent homeostatic self-regulation while keeping the global colony performance scalable. Task allocation mechanisms based on implicitly honest signaling via material flows are not only very robust but are also highly evolvable due to their simplicity and reliability. We find that task partitioning has evolved to be scalable and adaptable to life history traits, such as expected colony size or temporal bottlenecks in the available workforce or materials. By tuning solely the total number of agents and a social connectivity-related parameter in the model, our simulations yield the whole range of emergent patterns in task allocation and task fidelity akin to observed field data. Our model suggests that the material exchange ("common stomach mechanism") found in many paper wasps provides a common functional "core" across these genera, which not only provides self-regulation of the colony, but also provides a scalable mechanism allowing natural selection to yield complex social integration in larger colonies over the course of their evolutionary trajectory.
