Abstract
Two novel anthracene derivatives were synthesized, and detailed photo-physical and biological investigations were carried out using a variety of spectroscopy techniques. The effect of cyano (-CN) substitution was found to be effective to alter the charge population and frontier orbital energy levels via Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Particularly, the introduction of styryl and triphenylamine groups attached to the anthracene core helped to increase the conjugation relative to the anthracene moiety. The results revealed that the molecules have intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties, occurring from the electron donating triphenylamine to the electron accepting anthracene moiety in solutions. In addition, the photo-physical properties are strongly cyano-dependent, where the cyano-substituted (E/Z)-(2-anthracen-9-yl)-3-(4'-(diphenylamino)biphenyl-4yl)acrylonitrile molecule showed stronger electron affinity due to the enhanced internal steric hindrance compared to the (E)-4'-(2-(anthracen-9-yl)vinyl)-N,N-diphenylbiphenyl-4-amine molecule, which resulted in a lower photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) value and a shorter lifetime in the molecule. Besides, the Molecular Docking approach was used to investigate possible cellular staining targets to confirm cellular imaging potential of the compounds. Moreover, cell viability analyses put forth that synthesized molecules do not exhibit significant cytotoxicity under 125 μg mL-1 concentration on the human dermal fibroblast cell line (HDFa). Moreover, both of the compounds showed great potential in cellular imaging of HDFa cells. Compared to Hoechst 33258, a common fluorescent dye used for nuclear staining, the compounds showed higher magnification of cellular structure imaging capacity by staining the whole cellular compartment. On the other hand, bacterial staining showed that ethidium bromide has higher resolution in monitoring Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) cell culture.

Abstract
Anthracene and anthracene derivatives have been extensively studied over the years because of their interesting photophysical, photochemical, and biological properties. They are currently the subject of research in several areas, which investigate their use in the biological field and their application in OLEDs, OFETs, polymeric materials, solar cells, and many other organic materials. Their synthesis remains challenging, but some important preparative methods have been reported, especially in the last decade. This review presents an update of the recent strategies that have been employed to prepare anthracene derivatives. It encompasses papers published over the last twelve years (2008–2020) and focuses on direct and indirect methods to construct anthracene and anthraquinone frameworks.

A new lipophilic amino alcohol, chemically similar to compound FTY720, attenuates the pathogenesis of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis by PI3K/Akt pathway inhibition. Abstract
Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is one of the main animal models used for the study of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Long-chain lipophilic amino alcohols with immunoregulatory activities have already been studied in some models of inflammatory diseases, but the action of these compounds in EAE and MS is still unknown. In this study, we investigated whether the lipophilic amino alcohol 4b would act to improve the clinical signs of EAE and reduce the demyelination process and the neuroinflammatory parameters in the spinal cord, as well as the inflammatory process in the inguinal lymph nodes, of C57Bl/6 mice induced with EAE after stimulation with MOG35-55 and pertussis toxin. The 4b treatment (1.0 mg/kg/day) was orally administered, starting on the day of onset of clinical signs of the disease (10th) and ending on the 20th day after immunization. This treatment was able to reduce the cell count on the inguinal lymph nodes, the migration of inflammatory cells into the central nervous system (CNS), as well as the processes of microgliosis, astrogliosis, and the production of chemokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines, thus increasing the IL-10 anti-inflammatory cytokine levels in EAE mice. The inhibition of Akt phosphorylation in the CNS of EAE mice after treatment with 4b indicates that the immunoregulatory action of 4b is related to the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Our results indicate the immunoregulatory efficacy of the new compound 4b in the control of some inflammatory parameters and in the glial proliferation. In addition, 4b was able to reduce the demyelination of neurons and the worsening of clinical signs of EAE as effectively as the compound FTY720, the first oral drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of MS.

Abstract
The first total syntheses of (±)-parimycin and (R)-parimycin were accomplished from O-methylnaphthazarin (6) in nine synthetic steps. Intermolecular Diels-Alder reaction of 6 with diene 7, cyclodehydrogenation catalyzed by iodine-dimethyl sulfoxide, and sodium dithionite reduction were the key steps. The absolute configuration of natural parimycin was determined to be S.

Abstract
Fifty two compounds based on 5-nitropyrimidine-2,4-dione moiety have been synthesized and evaluated for their inhibitory potency on the production of nitric oxide. Among them, compound 36 inhibited the production of nitric oxide (IC50 : 8.6 μm) on lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 cells and inducible nitric oxide synthase activity (IC50 : 6.2 μm), as well as exerted no potential cytotoxicity (IC50 > 80.0 μm). Docking study confirmed that compound 36 was an inducible nitric oxide synthase inhibitor with perfect binding to the active site of inducible nitric oxide synthase. At a dose of 10 mg/kg, oral administration of 36 possessed protective properties in carrageenan-induced paw edema of male ICR mice.
