Do Children Use Multi-Word Information in Real-Time Sentence Comprehension?

Does the Processing Advantage of Formulaic Language Persist in Its Nonadjacent Forms? Evidence from Eye Movements of Chinese Collocations

It has been well documented that formulaic language (such as collocations; e.g., provide information) enjoys a processing advantage over novel language (e.g., compare information). In natural language use, however, many formulaic sequences are often inserted with words intervening in between the individual constituents (e.g., provided information → provide some of the information). Whether or not the processing advantage persists in nonadjacent forms remains largely unknown. The present study thus sought to address this gap by recording the eye movements of Chinese native speakers when they were reading sentences embedded with formulaic sequences (high frequency collocations) versus novel phrases (low frequency controls), in their adjacent (e.g., 'resolve difficulties' vs. 'experience difficulties'), short-insertion (e.g., 'resolve these difficulties' vs. 'experience these difficulties'), and long-insertion forms (e.g., 'resolved so many difficulties' vs. 'experienced so many difficulties'). Results suggested that the processing advantage for formulaic language over novel language existed not only in their adjacent form, but also in their short-insertion form, albeit the magnitude of the processing advantage diminished with the increase of insertion length. The persistence of FL processing advantage is in line with usage-based approach to language learning, processing, and use.

Enhancing Syntactic Knowledge in School-Age Children With Developmental Language Disorder: The Promise of Syntactic Priming

PURPOSE

We propose that implicit learning, including syntactic priming, has therapeutic promise to enhance the syntactic knowledge of children with developmental language disorder (DLD).

METHOD

We review the chunk-based learning framework of syntactic learning, the developmental evidence in support of it, and the developmental literature on syntactic priming as an instance of chunk-based statistical learning. We use this framework to help understand the nature of the syntactic learning difficulties of children with DLD. We then briefly review the available explicit treatments for syntactic deficits and end by proposing an implicit training activity that integrates syntactic priming with the principles of statistical learning.

RESULTS

Statistically induced chunk-based learning is a powerful driver of syntactic learning, and syntactic priming is a form of this learning. Repeated priming episodes during everyday language interactions lead children to create abstract and global syntactic representations in long-term memory. We offer some thoughts on an implicit language intervention approach with syntactic priming at its center.

CONCLUSIONS

Children's learning of syntactic structures is influenced by repeated syntactic priming experiences. Including a syntactic priming activity in our language intervention toolbox has the promise to enhance children's syntactic knowledge and sentence comprehension and production abilities.

Common and distinct patterns underlying different linguistic tasks: multivariate disconnectome symptom mapping in poststroke patients

Numerous studies have been devoted to neural mechanisms of a variety of linguistic tasks (e.g. speech comprehension and production). To date, however, whether and how the neural patterns underlying different linguistic tasks are similar or differ remains elusive. In this study, we compared the neural patterns underlying 3 linguistic tasks mainly concerning speech comprehension and production. To address this, multivariate regression approaches with lesion/disconnection symptom mapping were applied to data from 216 stroke patients with damage to the left hemisphere. The results showed that lesion/disconnection patterns could predict both poststroke scores of speech comprehension and production tasks; these patterns exhibited shared regions on the temporal pole of the left hemisphere as well as unique regions contributing to the prediction for each domain. Lower scores in speech comprehension tasks were associated with lesions/abnormalities in the superior temporal gyrus and middle temporal gyrus, while lower scores in speech production tasks were associated with lesions/abnormalities in the left inferior parietal lobe and frontal lobe. These results suggested an important role of the ventral and dorsal stream pathways in speech comprehension and production (i.e. supporting the dual stream model) and highlighted the applicability of the novel multivariate disconnectome-based symptom mapping in cognitive neuroscience research.
