Genetic and Phenotypic Divergence in a Dung Beetle 50 Years After Its Introduction to Australia

Species translocations are increasingly being used in conservation and for biological control. The success of a translocation can be strongly influenced by the evolutionary processes occurring during the early phase of the introduction and the subsequent spread to new regions. In this study, morphological variation and population genetic structure were assessed in the African dung beetle Digitonthophagus gazella, a species that was intentionally introduced to Australia for biological control in 1968 and subsequently spread widely across the northern part of the continent. A dataset based on 1594 neutral single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci that were genotyped in 187 individuals from 12 sites revealed significant genetic divergences between sites (global F ST = 0.118) and provides evidence of restricted gene flow among established populations at small to moderate spatial scales (74-500 km). Geometric morphometric analyses revealed significant divergence among populations in the shape of the foretibia, a trait ecologically important for tunnelling in soil and dung. Moreover, phenotypic divergence in this trait for both sexes was significantly higher than genetic differentiation at selectively neutral loci (P ST > F ST), suggesting that directional selection is contributing to the phenotypic divergences among populations. Our study shows how population structure can establish quickly in an introduced species and highlights the importance of considering local adaptation when performing translocations on established populations.

The phenotypic costs of captivity

The breeding of threatened species in captivity for release is a central tool in conservation biology. Given gloomy predictions for biodiversity trends in the Anthropocene, captive breeding will play an increasingly important role in preventing future extinctions. Relative to the wild, captive environments drastically alter selection pressures on animals. Phenotypic change in captive animals in response to these altered selection pressures can incur fitness costs post-release, jeopardising their potential contribution to population recovery. We explore the ways in which captive environments can hinder the expression of wild phenotypes. We also stress that the phenotypes of captive-bred animals differ from their wild counterparts in multiple ways that remain poorly understood. We propose five new research questions relating to the impact of captive phenotypes on reintroduction biology. With better use of monitoring and experimental reintroductions, a more robust evidence base should help inform adaptive management and minimise the phenotypic costs of captivity, improving the success of animal reintroductions.

Biological invasion is a global problem with large negative impacts on ecosystems and human societies. When a species is introduced, individuals will first have to pass through the invasion stages of uptake and transport, before actual introduction in a non-native range. Selection is predicted to act during these earliest stages of biological invasion, potentially influencing the invasiveness and/or impact of introduced populations. Despite this potential impact of pre-introduction selection, empirical tests are virtually lacking. To test the hypothesis of pre-introduction selection, we followed the fate of individuals during capture, initial acclimation, and captivity in two bird species with several invasive populations originating from the international trade in wild-caught pets (the weavers Ploceus melanocephalus and Euplectes afer). We confirm that pre-introduction selection acts on a wide range of physiological, morphological, behavioral, and demographic traits (incl. sex, age, size of body/brain/bill, bill shape, body mass, corticosterone levels, and escape behavior); these are all traits which likely affect invasion success. Our study thus comprehensively demonstrates the existence of hitherto ignored selection acting before the actual introduction into non-native ranges. This could ultimately change the composition and functioning of introduced populations, and therefore warrants greater attention. More knowledge on pre-introduction selection also might provide novel targets for the management of invasive species, if pre-introduction filters can be adjusted to change the quality and/or quantity of individuals passing through such that invasion probability and/or impacts are reduced.
