Demographic noise and cost of greenbeard can facilitate greenbeard cooperation

Universality of evolutionary trajectories under arbitrary forms of self-limitation and competition

The assumption of constant population size is central in population genetics. It led to a large body of results that is robust to modeling choices and that has proven successful to understand evolutionary dynamics. In reality, allele frequencies and population size are both determined by the interaction between a population and the environment. Relaxing the constant-population assumption has two big drawbacks. It increases the technical difficulty of the analysis, and it requires specifying a mechanism for the saturation of the population size, possibly making the results contingent on model details. Here we develop a framework that encompasses a great variety of systems with an arbitrary mechanism for population growth limitation. By using techniques based on scale separation for stochastic processes, we are able to calculate analytically properties of evolutionary trajectories, such as the fixation probability. Remarkably, these properties assume a universal form with respect to our framework, which depends on only three parameters related to the intergeneration timescale, the invasion fitness, and the carrying capacity of the strains. In other words, different systems, such as Lotka-Volterra or a chemostat model (contained in our framework), share the same evolutionary outcomes after a proper remapping of their parameters. An important and surprising consequence of our results is that the direction of selection can be inverted, with a population evolving to reach lower values of invasion fitness.

Data-driven discovery of stochastic dynamical equations of collective motion

Coarse-grained descriptions of collective motion of flocking systems are often derived for the macroscopic or the thermodynamic limit. However, the size of many real flocks falls within 'mesoscopic' scales (10 to 100 individuals), where stochasticity arising from the finite flock sizes is important. Previous studies on mesoscopic models have typically focused on non-spatial models. Developing mesoscopic scale equations, typically in the form of stochastic differential equations, can be challenging even for the simplest of the collective motion models that explicitly account for space. To address this gap, here, we take a novel data-driven equation learning approach to construct the stochastic mesoscopic descriptions of a simple, spatial, self-propelled particle (SPP) model of collective motion. In the spatial model, a focal individual can interact withkrandomly chosen neighbours within an interaction radius. We considerk = 1 (called stochastic pairwise interactions),k = 2 (stochastic ternary interactions), andkequalling all available neighbours within the interaction radius (equivalent to Vicsek-like local averaging). For the stochastic pairwise interaction model, the data-driven mesoscopic equations reveal that the collective order is driven by a multiplicative noise term (hence termed, noise-induced flocking). In contrast, for higher order interactions (k > 1), including Vicsek-like averaging interactions, models yield collective order driven by a combination of deterministic and stochastic forces. We find that the relation between the parameters of the mesoscopic equations describing the dynamics and the population size are sensitive to the density and to the interaction radius, exhibiting deviations from mean-field theoretical expectations. We provide semi-analytic arguments potentially explaining these observed deviations. In summary, our study emphasises the importance of mesoscopic descriptions of flocking systems and demonstrates the potential of the data-driven equation discovery methods for complex systems studies.

Cheater suppression and stochastic clearance through quorum sensing

The evolutionary consequences of quorum sensing in regulating bacterial cooperation are not fully understood. In this study, we reveal unexpected effects of regulating public good production through quorum sensing on bacterial population dynamics, showing that quorum sensing can be a collectively harmful alternative to unregulated production. We analyze a birth-death model of bacterial population dynamics accounting for public good production and the presence of non-producing cheaters. Our model demonstrates that when demographic noise is a factor, the consequences of controlling public good production according to quorum sensing depend on the cost of public good production and the growth rate of populations in the absence of public goods. When public good production is inexpensive, quorum sensing is a destructive alternative to unconditional production, in terms of the mean population extinction time. When costs are higher, quorum sensing becomes a constructive strategy for the producing strain, both stabilizing cooperation and decreasing the risk of population extinction.

Quorum sensing is a process through which bacteria can regulate gene expression according to their population density. The reasons for why bacteria use quorum sensing to regulate production of “public goods”, biochemical products that benefit nearby bacteria, are not entirely clear. We use mathematical modeling to explore how quorum sensing compares to other strategies for controlling production of public goods, namely unconditional production independent on population density, in small populations of bacteria where the random nature of growth is significant. Our model captures both how likely “cheater” strains, which do not produce public goods but benefit from them, are to take over a population and how long on average the population will last before going extinct. We find that depending on how expensive public good production is and how critical public goods are for growth, quorum sensing can decrease or increase the mean time to extinction compared with unconditional production, while always reducing the likelihood of cheaters taking over. Our results could have important implications for the growth of bacterial infections, for example Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections of the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients.

Antagonistic interactions subdue inter-species green-beard cooperation in bacteria

Cooperation can be favoured through the green-beard mechanism, where a set of linked genes encodes both a cooperative trait and a phenotypic marker (green beard), which allows carriers of the trait to selectively direct cooperative acts to other carriers. In theory, the green-beard mechanism should favour cooperation even when interacting partners are totally unrelated at the genome level. Here, we explore such an extreme green-beard scenario between two unrelated bacterial species-Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cenocepacia, which share a cooperative locus encoding the public good pyochelin (an iron-scavenging siderophore) and its cognate receptor (green beard) required for iron-pyochelin uptake. We show that pyochelin, when provided in cell-free supernatants, can be mutually exchanged between species and provide fitness benefits under iron limitation. However, in co-culture we observed that these cooperative benefits vanished and communities were dominated by P. aeruginosa, regardless of strain background and species starting frequencies. Our results further suggest that P. aeruginosa engages in interference competition to suppress B. cenocepacia, indicating that inter-species conflict arising from dissimilarities at the genome level overrule the aligned cooperative interests at the pyochelin locus. Thus, green-beard cooperation is subdued by competition, indicating that interspecific siderophore cooperation is difficult to evolve and to be maintained.
