Abstract
Alopecia is comorbid with several illnesses, including various autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disease. Leukocyte-mediated inflammation of hair follicles in alopecia was first described over a century ago. However, the high prevalence of the role of thyroid autoimmune disease in the pathogenesis of alopecia has only recently come to light, together with a strong association between the two. Therefore, this review focuses on articles published between 2011 and 2022 on alopecia's association with thyroid autoimmune disease, and the mechanism behind it. In addition, it highlights the link between alopecia and thyroid cancer, as patients with alopecia have increased risk of thyroid cancer. In conclusion, this comprehensive, focused, scoping review will serve as a reference highlighting recent information on alopecia, exploring its association with thyroid autoimmune diseases.

Abstract
Introduction Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a cicatricial alopecia whose incidence has greatly increased worldwide over the last years. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the possible association of the social status of FFA patients with the prognosis of the disease. Methods A total of 100 female patients with FFA, monitored at Andreas Sygros Hospital, Athens, Greece, during the last 3 years, were recruited in this observational study. The age of the women ranged from 29 to 92 years with a mean age of 61.2 years (SD = 10.3); 97% of them were Greek, with skin type II and III. Results In total, 46% of the patients were intermediate graduates, and 42% had received tertiary education; 82% were married and 21% had 1 child. The duration of the disease ranged from 0.5 to 20 years with a mean duration of 5.2 years. In 53% of the women, the frontal hairline recession was <1 cm, in 26% it was 1-2 cm, and in 15% it was 3-4.99 cm. Overall, 55.6% of patients were professionals, 26% were technicians and associate professionals, 23% were office workers, 9% were service and sales workers, and 13% were at elementary occupations. The severity of the disease was higher in lower-educated patients, who belong to the category of unskilled or with elementary occupation. Conclusions Women with high educational level and social status are more likely to be diagnosed earlier, resulting in sufficient therapeutic response.

Abstract
Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is critical for embryonic development and wound healing, and occurs in fibrotic disease and carcinoma. Here, we show that EMT also occurs within the bulge, the epithelial stem cell (eSC) niche of human scalp hair follicles, during the inflammatory permanent alopecia, lichen planopilaris. We show that a molecular EMT signature can be experimentally induced in healthy human eSCs in situ by antagonizing E-cadherin, combined with transforming growth factor-β1, epidermal growth factor, and IFN-γ administration, which to our knowledge has not been reported previously. Moreover, induction of EMT within primary human eSCs can be prevented and even partially reversed ex vivo by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ agonists, likely through suppression of the transforming growth factor-β signaling pathway. Furthermore, we show that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ agonists also attenuates the EMT signature even in lesional lichen planopilaris hair follicles ex vivo. We introduce lichen planopilaris as a model disease for pathological EMT in human adult eSCs, report a preclinical assay for therapeutically manipulating eSC EMT within a healthy human (mini-)organ, and show that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ agonists are promising agents for suppressing and partially reversing EMT in human hair follicles eSCs ex vivo, including in lichen planopilaris.
