Indoor human thermal adaptation: dynamic processes and weighting factors

Thermal perception and lung function: a panel study in young adults with exercise under high outdoor temperature

It has been observed that high temperature exposure is associated with a reduction in lung function and some possible biological mechanisms have been suggested. However, it is unclear if thermal perception plays a role in the association. From September 3rd to 15th, 2018, in Guangzhou, China, we repeatedly measured daily thermal perception and lung function among 126 participants with outdoor military training. We performed a linear mixed model and stratified analyses by the origin of students, gender, and the training period to evaluate the effects of thermal perception on lung function. A total of 399 measurements were collected. Per vote increase in thermal sensation vote towards the "hot" direction was associated with a - 0.04 L (95% CI: - 0.08 to - 0.01) decrease in forced vital capacity (FVC), and - 0.04 L (95% CI: - 0.08 to - 0.01) decrease in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV₁). Per grade increase towards the "very uncomfortable" direction for thermal comfort vote was associated with an increased percentage of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV₁%) by 1.52% (95% CI: 0.18 to 2.86). For thermal preference, with preferred cooler vote increased by one level, FVC and FEV₁ decreased by - 0.05 L/s (95% CI: - 0.08 to - 0.02) and - 0.05L/s (95% CI: - 0.08 to - 0.02), respectively. The effects of thermal perception on lung function were stronger among non-local and in the first week of training. Our study suggests that in the same high-temperature environment, thermal perception is associated with lung function, even in healthy adults.

Differences of energy adaptation strategies in Tupaia belangeri between Pianma and Tengchong region by metabolomics of liver: Role of warmer temperature

Global warming is becoming the future climate trend and will have a significant impact on small mammals, and they will also adapt at the physiological levels in response to climate change, among which the adaptation of energetics is the key to their survival. In order to investigate the physiological adaptation strategies in Tupaia belangeri affected by the climate change and to predict their possible fate under future global warming, we designed a metabonomic study in T. belangeri between two different places, including Pianma (PM, annual average temperature 15.01°C) and Tengchong (TC, annual average temperature 20.32°C), to analyze the differences of liver metabolite. Moreover, the changes of resting metabolic rate, body temperature, uncoupling protein 1content (UCP1) and other energy indicators in T. belangeri between the two places were also measured. The results showed that T. belangeri in warm areas (TC) reduced the concentrations of energy metabolites in the liver, such as pyruvic acid, fructose 6-phosphate, citric acid, malic acid, fumaric acid etc., so their energy metabolism intensity was also reduced, indicating that important energy metabolism pathway of glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) pathway reduced in T. belangeri from warmer habitat. Furthermore, brown adipose tissue (BAT) mass, UCP1 content and RMR in TC also decreased significantly, but their body temperature increased. All of the results suggested that T. belangeri adapt to the impact of warm temperature by reducing energy expenditure and increasing body temperature. In conclusion, our research had broadened our understanding of the physiological adaptation strategies to cope with climate change, and also provided a preliminary insight into the fate of T. belangeri for the future global warming climate.

A field investigation of the thermal environment and adaptive thermal behavior in bedrooms in different climate regions in China

Sleep thermal environments substantially impact sleep quality. To study the sleep thermal environment and thermal comfort in China, this study carried out on-site monitoring of thermal environmental parameters in peoples' homes, including 166 households in five climate zones, for one year. A questionnaire survey on sleep thermal comfort and adaptive behavior was also conducted. The results showed that the indoor temperature for sleep in northern China was more than 4°C higher than that in southern China in winter, while the indoor temperatures for sleep were similar in summer. Furthermore, 70% of people were satisfied with their sleep thermal environment. Due to the use of air conditioning and window opening in various areas in summer, people were satisfied with their sleep thermal environments. Due to the lack of central heating in the southern region in winter, people feel cold and their sleep thermal environment needs further improvement. The bedding insulation in summer and winter in northern China was 1.83clo and 2.67clo, respectively, and in southern China was 2.21clo and 3.17clo, respectively. Both northern China and southern China used air conditioning only in summer. People in southern China opened their windows all year, while those in northern China opened their windows during the summer and transitional periods.

Adaptive-rational thermal comfort model: Adaptive predicted mean vote with variable adaptive coefficient

Thermal adaptations, as feedbacks of occupants to physical stimuli, extend thermal comfort zone thereby reducing building energy consumption effectively. The rational approach models thermal comfort from the perspective of the body's heat balance, but is limited in explaining the thermal adaptations. The adaptive approach of modeling thermal comfort can fully account for the thermal adaptations, but ignores the body's heat balance. To improve thermal comfort prediction, this study proposes an adaptive-rational thermal comfort model, that is, an adaptive predicted mean vote with a variable adaptive coefficient (termed as arPMV). By linearly linking the negative feedback effects of the thermal adaptations to the ambient temperature according to the adaptive approach, the variable adaptive coefficient is linearly related to the reciprocal of the ambient temperature with two constants. The variable adaptive coefficient is determined by explicitly quantifying the two constants as the functions of the predicted mean vote, thermal sensation vote, and ambient temperature. The proposed arPMV is validated for naturally ventilated, air-conditioned, and mixed-mode buildings, with the mean absolute error and the robustness of the thermal sensation prediction reduced by 24.8%-83.5% and improved by 49.7%-83.4%, respectively.
