Abstract
This Position Statement provides guidelines to assist all health professionals who receive requests for carrier testing and laboratory staff conducting the tests.In this Statement, the term 'carrier testing' refers to genetic testing in an individual to determine whether they have inherited a pathogenic variant associated with an autosomal or X-linked recessive condition previously identified in a blood relative. Carrier testing recommendations: (1) Carrier testing should only be performed with the individual's knowledge and consent; (2) An individual considering (for themselves, or on behalf of another) whether to have a carrier test should be supported to make an informed decision; (3) The mode of inheritance, the individual's personal experience with the condition, and the healthcare setting in which the test is being performed should be considered when determining whether carrier testing should be offered by a genetic health professional. Regarding children and young people: Unless there is direct medical benefit in the immediate future, the default position should be to postpone carrier testing until the child or young person can be supported to make an informed decision. There may be some specific situations where it is appropriate to facilitate carrier testing in children and young people (see section in this article). In such cases, testing should only be offered with pre- and post-test genetic counseling in which genetic health professionals and parents/guardians should explore the rationale for testing and the interests of the child and the family.

Abstract
Background Hemophilia carriers experience abnormal bleeding symptoms; however, a lack of awareness about this topic coupled with additional knowledge gaps and barriers leads to suboptimal care for this population. Objective The primary objective was to describe the current knowledge gaps and challenges from the perspective of both hemophilia carriers and their health care providers. Methods We carried out a mixed methods descriptive study with two population groups between September and December 2020. The hemophilia carrier perspective was obtained through both focus groups and questionnaires, whereas the health care providers perspective obtained via questionnaire sent to the Association of Hemophilia Care Directors of Canada and the Canadian Association of Nurses in Hemophilia Care. Focus groups were analyzed using descriptive thematic analysis and quantitative survey data was also analyzed. Results Eleven hemophilia carriers participated along with 19 health care providers (11 physicians, eight nurses). Hemophilia carrier focus group discussions identified four areas representing major challenges or knowledge gaps: (1) negative psychosocial impacts; (2) difficulty determining symptom significance; (3) need for self‐advocacy; (4) testing concerns. Survey results from both groups were aligned with the most important topics for ongoing education identified as information on abnormal bleeding symptoms, where to seek treatment, and considerations for heavy menstrual bleeding/menstruation. The majority of both study groups believe obligate or potential carriers should have factor levels checked regardless of age if symptoms of abnormal bleeding occur or before an invasive procedure. However, hemophilia carriers were significantly more in favor of genetic testing under the age of consent than health care providers in all scenarios evaluated.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Haemophilia carriers (HCs) face considerable haemostatic and psychological challenges during reproduction. AIM To explore the perspectives of HCs on healthcare in the current standard of haemophilia treatment during all reproductive phases: preconception, pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. In addition, we examined the psychological impact of haemophilia during these phases. MATERIAL AND METHODS Focus group discussions (FGDs) and semi-structured interviews were conducted with HCs in January/February 2020 until data saturation was reached. All sessions were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed by two independent researchers through thematic content analysis using MAXQDA® software. The results were then discussed within the research team until consensus was reached. The constructed themes were shared with and reviewed by the HCs. RESULTS Fifteen HCs were included in three FGDs and four interviews. Five central themes were constructed: (1) communication by healthcare professionals, (2) lack of knowledge, (3) feeling insecure, (4) autonomy and (5) family experiences with haemophilia. Desired improvements in care mainly concerned counselling during preconception and pregnancy. This included timely access to comprehensive information during each consecutive phase, acceptance of HCs' choices by healthcare providers and healthcare tailored to the HC's family experience with haemophilia. CONCLUSIONS In recent years, haemophilia treatment has seen major advances, which could impact general and reproductive care for HCs. HCs indicated that reproductive care would benefit from a more personal and informative approach. Healthcare professionals could use these insights to adapt their consultations to meet the needs of these women when they are preparing for having children.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Despite increasing awareness of issues faced by women and girls with inherited BDs (WGBD), standards of care are lacking, with disparities in diagnosis and treatment for WGBD across Europe. We aimed to develop practical principles of care (PoC) to promote standardization of care for WGBD within European Haemophilia Treatment and Comprehensive Care Centres (HTC/CCCs). METHODS The co-creation process, supported by the European Association for Haemophilia and Allied Disorders, consisted of four multidisciplinary meetings with health care providers (HCPs) experienced in WGBD care, and European Haemophilia Consortium representatives, combined with broad patient and HCP consultations in the European haemophilia community. Relevant medical societies outside Europe were contacted for confirmation. RESULTS We developed ten PoC for WGBD, stressing the importance and benefits of a centralized, multidisciplinary, comprehensive, family-centred approach to support and manage WGBD during all life stages. These PoC emphasise the right to equitable access and quality of care for all people with BDs, irrespective of gender. Multiple medical societies outside Europe also confirmed their support for endorsement. CONCLUSIONS Ten PoC for WGBD evolved from an iterative process among stakeholders, supported by relevant medical societies worldwide. These PoC can serve as a benchmark for diagnosis and comprehensive multidisciplinary management of WGBD, and improve awareness of their unique challenges. They offer a framework to guide HTC/CCCs in providing equitable care for all WGBD, both in their own services and in other healthcare settings. Implementation of these principles aims to positively impact the health, wellbeing and quality of life for WGBD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hemophilia carriers (HCs) face specific psychosocial challenges related to pregnancy, caused by their inherited bleeding disorder. Optimal support from healthcare providers can only be realized by exploring medical and psychological healthcare requirements. OBJECTIVE To review all published evidence on the experiences and attitudes of HCs regarding reproductive decision-making, prenatal diagnosis, pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium to provide an accessible overview of this information for health care providers. STUDY SELECTION Cochrane library, PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched for original qualitative data. Two authors performed study selection, risk-of-bias assessment, data extraction, and data analysis through meta-summary. The extracted themes were discussed within the research team. FINDINGS Fifteen studies with an overall moderate quality were included. The following findings were identified: (a) Quality of life of family members with hemophilia influences reproductive decision-making; (b) Genetic counselling is generally considered useful; (c) The development of a specialized carrier clinic is considered valuable; (d) HCs describe prenatal diagnosis as beneficial yet psychosocially challenging; and (e) noninvasive prenatal diagnosis and preimplantation genetic diagnosis are predominantly considered beneficial. These findings are limited by the overall moderate quality of included studies and the possibly partly outdated results in the current era of hemophilia treatment. CONCLUSIONS Available qualitative literature on HCs around pregnancy focuses on genetic counselling and prenatal diagnosis. Future studies are needed on the experiences and needs of HCs through pregnancy and puerperium as well as in light of emerging hemophilia diagnosis and treatment options.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The impact of bleeding for women with bleeding disorders (WBD) is of increasing focus and importance. Despite this, optimal management strategies are unclear and knowledge gaps persist. AIM To examine practices and define research priorities on diagnosis and management of WBD in Europe. METHODS An electronic survey on clinical management of WBD was sent to 136 European haemophilia treatment centres (HTCs), including open questions on knowledge gaps and research priorities. RESULTS Fifty-nine HTCs from 12 Western (WE) and 13 Central/Eastern European (CEE) countries completed the survey. Less than half runs a joint clinic (24 HTCs, 42%). Most centres without a joint clinic have a named obstetrician (81%) and/or gynaecologist (75%) available for collaboration. Overall 18/54 (33%) European HTCs do not offer preimplantation genetic diagnosis. Third trimester amniocentesis to guide obstetric management is available 28/54 HTCs (52%), less frequent in CEE compared to WE countries (5/17 vs 23/37, P = .03). 53% of HTCs (28/53) reported that only 0%-25% of WBD seek medical advice for heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). An algorithm managing acute HMB in WBD is lacking in 22/53 (42%) HTCs. The main reported knowledge and research gaps are lack of awareness & education on WBD among patients and caregivers, optimal diagnostic strategies and effective multidisciplinary management of pregnancy & HMB. CONCLUSION Joint clinics, prenatal diagnostics and algorithms for managing acute HMB are lacking in many European HTCs. HMB may be an underestimated issue. This survey highlights the need to prioritize improvement of knowledge and patient care for WBD across Europe.

Abstract
Background Genomic sequencing technologies have made the possibility of population screening for whole panels of genetic disorders more feasible than ever before. As one of the most common single gene disorders affecting the UK population, hemophilia is an attractive candidate to include on such screening panels. However, very little is known about views toward genetic screening amongst people with hemophilia or their family members, despite the potential for a wide range of impacts on them. Methods Twenty‐two in‐depth qualitative interviews were undertaken to explore the views of adults with hemophilia and their family members, recruited through the Haemophilia Society UK. These interviews were used to develop a survey, the Haemophilia Screening Survey (UK), which was distributed in paper and online format through the support group, receiving 327 returns between January and June 2018. Results Fifty‐seven per cent of the sample supported preconception carrier screening of the population for hemophilia, and 59% supported prenatal carrier screening. Key reasons for support included a desire to reduce pregnancy terminations and increase awareness of hemophilia. Despite support for screening however, 90% of the sample disagreed with pregnancy terminations for hemophilia. Conclusions Families and adults living with hemophilia are more supportive of screening for information and preparation purposes than to prevent boys with hemophilia from being born. A distinction was made between preventing the disease and preventing the lives of people with it, with support shown for the use of screening to achieve the former, but not at the expense of the latter.

The experience of living in a non-metropolitan area and parenting a child with haemophilia is relatively unknown. Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the following study explored the experiences of seven parents, from which four themes emerged: ‘bearing the brunt of diagnosis’ captures the impact of the diagnosis; ‘if you can’t help me, who can?’ reveals experiences with the health system; ‘tackling the challenge of treatment’ encompasses difficulties in adhering to the treatment regime; ‘I need you to understand’ reflects desires for others support and understanding. These themes should be considered when developing support systems and interventions for parents living in non-metropolitan areas.

Abstract
Studies on carriers of genetic disorders mainly focus on the process of genetic testing and reproductive choices, and less on how psychosocial aspects of being a carrier change over time. Our study sought to understand more about the psychosocial aspects of hemophilia carrier status, and thereby improve counseling aiming to advance carriers' quality of life and well-being. We analyzed 16 in-depth interviews from women who were carriers of hemophilia and had a son with hemophilia. Three themes emerged: Guilt and sorrow across generations; the choices and future consequences of genetic testing; and preparing to have a child with hemophilia. Experience with being a hemophilia carrier is a process that changes over time while feelings of guilt and sorrow run across generations. The carrier status may create "mothers-in-waiting" living at risk of having a sick child or not. The women think they are prepared to have a son with hemophilia, but experience more sadness than they expect when a son is diagnosed. Our findings suggest that health professionals, especially clinical geneticists and genetic counselors, carriers, families and patient organizations need to be aware that women's experiences of being a carrier of hemophilia changes during the biographical life course. The women may benefit from several rounds of genetic counseling at different stages of life.

Abstract
In the context of a child being diagnosed with a genetic condition, reports from both parents and health professionals suggest many genetic health professionals are reluctant to provide carrier testing for unaffected siblings, despite the lack of evidence of harm. We propose that genetic health professionals' understandings of why parents want to have their children tested may contribute to their reluctance to test. We draw on interviews with 17 genetic health professionals, reporting their beliefs about parents' motivations for testing and their intentions to communicate results to their children. Data were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Genetic health professionals reported attributions that contrasted with reasons parents actually report. These disparities fall into two categories: 1) attributing reasons that parents do not themselves report (i.e. for reassurance about their child's health), and 2) not recognizing the reasons that parents actually do report for wanting testing (i.e. to communicate the information to their child). By identifying that genetic health professionals may be misattributing reasons to parents for desiring their child"s carrier status, they may be missing an opportunity to assist parents to make decisions that are in line with their values and the best interests of the family.

Abstract
When a child is identified with a genetic condition, some parents want to know the carrier status of their other children. There has been little exploration of why parents want this information. To address this question, semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents of 32 children with cystic fibrosis, haemophilia, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy who wanted to know the carrier status of their other children. Data was analyzed using inductive content analysis. Parents expressed a range of reasons for desiring their child's carrier status, which fell into two broad categories: 1) benefit for the parents and 2) perceived benefit to the child. Parents discussed the desire for certainty and peace of mind derived from having knowledge of their child's status. The most commonly expressed reason for wanting to know their child's carrier status was in order to communicate the information to their child to provide them with the ability to make informed reproductive decisions. These reasons suggest parents are seeking their children's carrier information both as a coping strategy and to communicate carrier information as part of their role as a parent. This has important implications for genetic counseling practice, especially as international guidelines generally recommend against carrier testing in children.

Abstract
Many international guidelines recommend that carrier testing in minors should be postponed either until the age of majority or until the child can be actively involved in the decision making process. Although a number of high school programs exist which provide carrier screening to adolescents in at-risk populations, recent guidelines published by the American Society of Human Genetics do not advocate this testing. Despite this, there are some circumstances in which carrier testing does occur in minors. This testing might be intentional, in which identification of carrier status is the goal of the test, or unintentional, where carrier status is identified as a by-product of testing. In this review we outline the situations in which carriers may be identified in childhood and the positions of professional guidelines that address carrier testing in children. We then review the arguments for and against carrier testing presented in the literature and compare this to the empirical evidence in this field.

Abstract
Haemophilia is an X-linked recessive genetic disease of haemostasis. Women carriers may present with a bleeding tendency similar to milder forms of the disease. Haemophilic newborns present risk factors and patterns of bleeding that are challenging. Identification of carriers and genetic counselling before conception is considered optimal to help decide on available conception options and during pregnancy to help minimise bleeding risks for both carrier mother and affected baby. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is attractive to many couples at risk of having a child with haemophilia and relevant technology is becoming more available although it has both practical and ethical limitations. Pregnancy in carriers should be managed by a multidisciplinary team in a comprehensive treatment centre. The optimal mode of delivery for carriers expecting a baby known to have or being at risk of haemophilia is an issue of great debate. The general consensus among authors is avoidance of instrumental delivery, foetal scalp electrodes and blood sampling in pregnancies at risk of carrying an affected foetus, as well as early recourse to Caesarean section as guided by obstetric indications. Intracranial haemorrhage, although infrequent, is one the most devastating types of bleeding in haemophilic newborns and can occur regardless of the mode of delivery or the severity of haemophilia. Early screening is proposed for all infants with severe or moderate haemophilia who have had traumatic delivery and/or have evidence of extracranial haemorrhage. Women with postpartum haemorrhage should have a bleeding work-up.

Abstract
In excess of 200 people with hemophilia (PWH) and their families have received genetic counseling (GC) at the Hemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. However, very few of their at-risk female relatives have attended GC to discuss their reproductive risks and options, or their potential bleeding risks. Limited research has been conducted internationally on factors influencing uptake of GC and testing amongst female relatives of PWH. This prospective study aimed to explore the factors that influence the uptake of GC and testing by female relatives of PWH. An open-ended semi-structured interview schedule was developed. Participants included female relatives of PWH who at least had a family member who had received GC. Seventeen participants were interviewed; 7 who had GC previously and 10 who had not. All participants who had previously received GC found the service helpful and were mothers referred because their sons had hemophilia. Of those who had not had GC, possible deterrents included: being unaware of GC service, focus in clinic on PWH and not potential carriers, misunderstood risks related to hemophilia and carrier status, fear of finding out carrier status, and non-disclosure in families. Most participants were unaware of potential bleeding risks for carriers. The information will be used to provide a better service to female relatives of PWH with a goal being to set up a dedicated hemophilia carrier clinic.

Abstract
Relatively few investigations of the public's perceptions and attitudes about genetic counseling exist, and most are limited to individuals at-risk for a specific disease. In this study 203 individuals from a Midwest rural area completed an anonymous survey assessing their familiarity with genetic counseling; perceptions of genetic counseling purpose, scope, and practice; attitudes toward genetic counseling/counselors; and willingness to use genetic counseling services. Although very few respondents were familiar with genetic counseling, most reported accurate perceptions and positive attitudes; mean ratings, however, showed less endorsement of trust in information provided by genetic counselors and less agreement that genetic counseling aligns with their values. Logistic regression indicated reported willingness to use genetic counseling services increased if respondents: had completed some college; rated their familiarity with genetic counseling as high; agreed with the statements: genetic counseling may be useful to someone with cancer in their family, genetic counseling is in line with my values, and genetic counselors advise women to get abortions when there is a problem; and disagreed with the statements: genetic counseling is only useful to a small group of people with rare diseases, and genetic counselors must receive a lot of special training. Additional findings, practice implications, and research recommendations are presented.

Abstract
The paper describes the experience of the Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory in prenatal testing for haemophilia A, an X-linked recessive disease caused by mutations in the F8 gene. Knowledge of a familial mutation prior to pregnancy can benefit prenatal diagnosis and decrease wait time for molecular testing during pregnancy. This is a retrospective review of a series of pregnant women who pursued F8 gene testing from December 1997 through May 2012, highlighting three cases, which demonstrate the technical complexities of analysis and the implications of not knowing carrier status prior to pregnancy. Mutations of the F8 gene were detected in affected males, obligate female carriers and suspected female carriers by DNA sequencing, inverse-PCR, qRT-PCR, Southern blot and exonic dosage analysis. The same methods were used to analyse prenatal samples from obligate or suspected female carriers upon request. Maternal cell contamination studies were performed for all prenatal samples analysed. Ninety-nine women pursued F8 testing during pregnancy, either for carrier status alone or carrier status and prenatal diagnosis. Ninety-one women (91%) requested carrier testing because they did not know their F8 mutation carrier status prior to pregnancy. Eight women requested prenatal diagnosis only, and only 4 of these were aware of their mutation status. Thirty-seven individuals were found to be mutation carriers. Forty-two prenatal samples were received for prenatal diagnosis. In total 21 foetuses were identified as mutation carriers. Mutation detection was complex and increased the turnaround time in some cases. Only four of 99 women who submitted samples for F8 testing were aware of their F8 mutation status prior to pregnancy. Knowledge of F8 mutation status prior to pregnancy allows for efficient prenatal diagnosis, when desired. Thus, preconception genetic counselling is required to inform patients of the available options and the complex and time-consuming nature of F8 testing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The study examined the knowledge and attitudes to personal genomics testing for complex diseases among Nigerians and identified how the knowledge and attitudes vary with gender, age, religion, education and related factors. METHODS Data were collected using qualitative method in 2 districts of the Federal Capital Territory. In the study, eight (8) Focused Group Discussions (FGDs) and twenty seven (27) Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) were conducted. Participants for the research were recruited among healthy Nigerians, individuals with complex diseases, health care professionals, community leaders and health policy makers. RESULT Analysis of the result showed that most respondents in both FGDs and KIIs had limited knowledge about genomics test initially. Their understanding of the test however improved after explanation on its concept. Participants showed positive attitude towards genomics tests. Nevertheless they expressed fear over direct to consumer personal genomics testing, testing unborn babies and disclosure of results to third parties. Culture and religion were found to influence the perspectives of respondents on genomics test particularly those aspects that could either directly contradict their beliefs and practices or lead to actions which contradict them. CONCLUSION In conclusion, most Nigerians interviewed had limited knowledge of genomics test but with supportive attitude towards its use in predicting future risk of complex diseases after understanding the test concept. Genomics testing for complex diseases was not a common practice in Nigeria.

Abstract
Genetic counselling and testing for females with a family history of haemophilia has long been advocated. However, there is little research in regard to clients' satisfaction with the existing counselling models in haemophilia, and in particular with nurse-led clinics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether clients were satisfied with a nurse-led carrier testing clinic and counselling service. A retrospective quantitative study of clients' satisfaction and perceived knowledge was undertaken using an anonymous questionnaire. A sample of 42 women who had attended the clinic in the last 12 months was identified. The response rate for the study was 71% (n = 30).Two thirds of the respondents were 35 years of age or younger, 93% had a family history of haemophilia and 56% were diagnosed as carriers. Perceived understanding and knowledge increased significantly between the first and second appointments (p < 0.001). Overall, the study identified a high level of client satisfaction with the nurse-led carrier testing clinic and counselling service.

Abstract
Despite the increase in popularity of prenatal genetic testing, relatively little is known about the role psychological factors play in the decision-making process. In this analogue study, a sample of Italian female university students was used to investigate determining factors that predict the intention of undergoing prenatal genetic testing. Structural Equation Modelling was used to describe the dynamic interplay between knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and health-related behaviour such as prenatal genetic testing. Following the Theory of Reasoned Action, three dimensions predicted the intention to undergo prenatal genetic testing: the need for more scientific information, a positive attitude towards genetic testing, and the inclination to terminate pregnancy after receiving a positive test result. Results showed that less religious women tended to be more in favour of prenatal tests and in undertaking such tests. This preliminary study provides genetic counsellors and policy makers with a clearer picture of their clients' motives and attitudes behind the decision-making process of prenatal genetic testing, contributing to improving both the communication process between counsellors and their clients and the organization of genetic services.

Abstract
In pregnancies at risk of haemophilia, foetal sex determination is used to plan perinatal management and to guide the offer of invasive testing in pregnancies with a male foetus. Traditionally ultrasound from 12 weeks gestation has been used, but recently options for early foetal sex determination have increased following the introduction of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) using cell free foetal DNA in maternal plasma. This study was conducted to identify clinical practices and examine health professional attitudes regarding NIPD for foetal sex determination. A qualitative approach using one-to-one semi structured interviews was used to enable an in-depth exploration of current practice, introduction and use of NIPD and benefits and disadvantages of offering NIPD. Interviews were conducted with consultant haematologists (N = 7), specialist haemophilia nurses (N = 7), genetic counsellors (N = 6), consultants in clinical genetics (N = 5), specialist midwives (N = 2) and obstetricians (N = 5) from 24 services across the United Kingdom (UK). Key differences in how NIPD for foetal sexing is utilized throughout the UK were identified. Some services routinely offered NIPD to all carriers of haemophilia or to all carriers of severe haemophilia, others discussed the value of NIPD with all or primarily offered NIPD as a first step to invasive testing. This study informs our understanding of how NIPD is being utilized and provides unique insights into current practice. The identification of variation between services in how prenatal testing options are offered has implications for future policy and guidelines for prenatal care.

Abstract
As genetic advances become incorporated into health care delivery, disparities between developing and developed countries may become greater. By addressing genetic health care needs and specific differences of developing countries, these disparities may be mitigated. We sought to describe the attitudes and knowledge of subjects with hereditary neurological diseases in Mali before and after receiving genetic testing and counseling for the first time. A questionnaire of attitudes and knowledge items was adapted and piloted for use in Mali. We found that the majority of subjects had positive attitudes toward genetic testing and counseling, both before and afterwards. Subjects responded to approximately half of the knowledge questions regarding hereditary transmission correctly before and after genetic testing and counseling. Neither overall attitudes nor knowledge scores changed significantly from baseline. Concerns about confidentiality were expressed by the majority of subjects. These findings indicate that, despite limited knowledge of patterns of inheritance, Malians understood the sensitive nature of this information and were favorable toward receiving genetic testing and counseling for diagnostic and prognostic purposes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Mapping of the human genome raises interest in and concern about the genetic testing of adolescents. Our purpose was to determine the attitudes and knowledge adolescents and their parents have about genetic testing. DESIGN AND METHOD This paper is a report of a systematic review of the research literature (n = 56) about the attitudes and knowledge adolescents and their parents have about genetic testing. RESULTS The majority of studies, which were descriptive in design, focused on a specific heritable disorder, were conducted in the United States, and over-sampled well-educated White females. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Results suggest that adolescents and their families have relatively positive attitudes about genetic testing and may experience both harms and benefits from testing. Nurses may be in positions to assist adolescents and their families in making decisions about genetic testing, remaining sensitive to family dynamics and issues of privacy and autonomy.

Abstract
This is a descriptive study, which aims to report adult carriers' and their husbands/partners' experiences of carrier diagnosis and their views as to how these issues should be handled for the next generation. Following an initial pilot, 105 carriers and husbands/partners responded to a postal questionnaire. Most of the adult carriers had been tested because either they or their parents wanted to know their carrier status or they had a son diagnosed with haemophilia. The respondents agreed that the main reasons for testing young potential carriers should be either a family history of severe haemophilia or that the young person or her parents wanted to know her status. Forty per cent (35/87) believed the earliest age for carrier testing should be 0-9 years, 44% (38/87) 10-15 years and 16% (14/87) > or =16 years. Respondents aged 18-39 years were more likely to be in favour of testing <2 years. If parents and teenagers disagreed, the majority of parents thought that a test should not be forced, consent refused or results withheld. Genetic counselling provides an important opportunity for parents, who want a very early genetic test, to explore their motivations and balance their desire to prepare and protect their daughter with her right to decide as a teenager.
