Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition characterized by the destruction of melanocytes, leading to depigmented skin patches. Allergic contact dermatitis, triggered by allergens in cosmetics, can initiate localized immune responses that may progress to systemic immune dysregulation in genetically predisposed individuals. This case explores the potential role of allergic contact dermatitis in triggering vitiligo and proposes mechanisms underlying this association.

Contact Dermatitis: Overcoming Challenges of Specific Patients, Deciphering the Results and Reaching a Correct Diagnosis

Skin lesions caused by allergic contact dermatitis are an important occupational and environmental disease. Patch testing is the gold-standard procedure used to diagnose allergic contact dermatitis.The present chapter summarizes aspects of patch testing for the diagnosis of contact allergy: important working definitions, relevance of treating contact dermatitis, materials, technique, test result and interpretation, and special consideration regarding individual factors which influence the patch test outcome or necessitate special attention.Performing and interpreting patch tests requires know-how. Knowing how to perform them and the particularities of specific cases is essential to correctly interpret the results. A correct evaluation and diagnosis will significantly impact the natural history of the disease and significantly improve the quality of life of the patient.

Classification of facial vitiligo: A cluster analysis of 473 patients

Vitiligo has a substantial negative impact on quality of life in affected patients, especially those with the involvement of the face. However, the current system can barely distinguish between specific patterns of facial involvement except for the segmental type when focusing only on facial lesions. We classified facial vitiligo into three distinct subtypes using cluster analysis based on facial topography (n = 473): centrofacial vitiligo (72.9%), panfacial vitiligo (18.0%), and hairline vitiligo (9.1%). Centrofacial vitiligo was the most common type and is thought to comprise the typical facial involvement of generalized vitiligo. Panfacial vitiligo was a distinct subtype with onset in old age and less involvement of other body parts. Hairline vitiligo was another distinct subtype with onset in old age and a poor response to conventional phototherapy. A relevant classification system could help us to explore the causes, anticipate the prognosis, and manage the condition in patients with vitiligo.
