Blurring the Boundaries between a Branch and a Flower: Potential Developmental Venues in CACTACEAE

Flowers are defined as short shoots that carry reproductive organs. In Cactaceae, this term acquires another meaning, since the flower is interpreted as a branch with a perianth at the tip, with all reproductive organs embedded within the branch, thus giving way to a structure that has been called a "flower shoot". These organs have long attracted the attention of botanists and cactologists; however, the understanding of the morphogenetic processes during the development of these structures is far from clear. In this review, we present and discuss some classic flower concepts used to define floral structures in Cactaceae in the context of current advances in flower developmental genetics and evolution. Finally, we propose several hypotheses to explain the origin of these floral shoot structures in cacti, and we suggest future research approaches and methods that could be used to fill the gaps in our knowledge regarding the ontogenetic origin of the "flower" in the cactus family.

A unique cactus with scented and possibly bat-dispersed fruits: Rhipsalis juengeri

Rhipsalis juengeri was described in 1995 as an unusual representative of epiphytic cacti, forming more than 3 m long curtains, hanging from the canopy of the Atlantic Rainforest in eastern Brazil. At the apex of thin, pendant shoots, green-brownish berries are formed. We report here as a novelty for the Cactaceae that these berries are strongly scented, and present an odour analysis along with an olfactoric survey of fruits of about 50 species and varieties of the cactus tribe Rhipsalideae. The volatile blend of berries of R. juengeri is dominated by ketones, some of which are responsible for the characteristic blackcurrant-like scent, as is shown by GC-olfactometry. The odour and inconspicuous colour stand out among fruits of other epiphytic cacti that are thought to be consumed by birds. Fruit characters of R. juengeri and the flagellicarpic presentation indicate adaptation to chiropterochory.

Poikilohydry and homoihydry: antithesis or spectrum of possibilities?

Plants have followed two principal (and contrasting) strategies of adaptation to the irregular supply of water on land, which are closely bound up with scale. Vascular plants evolved internal transport from the soil to the leafy canopy (but their 'homoihydry' is far from absolute, and some are desiccation tolerant (DT)). Bryophytes depended on desiccation tolerance, suspending metabolism when water was not available; their cells are generally either fully turgid or desiccated. Desiccation tolerance requires preservation intact through drying-re-wetting cycles of essential cell components and their functional relationships, and controlled cessation and restarting of metabolism. In many bryophytes and some vascular plants tolerance is essentially constitutive. In other vascular plants (particularly poikilochlorophyllous species) and some bryophytes tolerance is induced by water stress. Desiccation tolerance is adaptively optimal on hard substrates impenetrable to roots, and on poor dry soils in seasonally dry climates. DT vascular plants are commonest in warm semiarid climates; DT mosses and lichens occur from tropical to polar regions. DT plants vary widely in their inertia to changing water content. Relictual vegetative anatomical characters in Cactaceae: the genusPereskia

The genusPereskia, which contains numerous morphological features considered relictual in the Cactaceae, has numerous anatomical features that we consider to be relictual also. These were studied to establish a basis for determining the ways that morphogenic mechanisms and anatomical characters diversified as the family evolved. ThesePereskia features may be relictual in the family: epidermis predominantly unistratose and lacking crystals; hypodermis absent or of about three layers of weakly collenchymatous cells with druses; cortex thin and predominantly parenchyma with druses and mucilage cells but lacking cortical bundles; secondary phloem without early differentiation of sclerenchyma but with secondary sclereids developing later, either idioblastically or in clusters; ergastic substances lacking from old secondary phloem; wood with a matrix of libriform fibers (mostly septate and nucleate), scanty paratracheal parenchyma, vessels solitary or in small clusters, perforations simple, pitting circular, oval or very broad; wide-band tracheids absent; ray cells slightly thick-walled, lignified, upright, isodiametric or procumbent; all primary rays narrow; pith without medullary bundles; leaves lacking hypodermis, with only weak development of palisade mesophyll; veins of four orders, strongly distinct in size, none with fibers; vessels in leaves narrower than those in stems.
