Abstract
Among the mechanisms of action of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO), the chance of reducing injury by interfering with the mechanisms of redox homeostasis in the heart leads to the possibility of extending the period of viability of the myocardium at risk. This would benefit late interventions for reperfusion to the ischemic area. The objective of the present study was to investigate the changes in the redox system associated with HBO therapy maintained during the first hour after coronary occlusion in an acute myocardial infarction (MI) rat model. Surviving male rats (n=105) were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Sham (SH=26), myocardial infarction (MI=45) and infarction+hyperbaric therapy (HBO=34, 1 h at 2.5 atm). After 90 min of coronary occlusion, a sample of the heart was collected for western blot analysis of total protein levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxiredoxin and 3‑nitrotyrosine. Glutathione was measured by enzyme‑linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The detection of the superoxide radical anion was carried out by oxidation of dihydroethidium analyzed with confocal microscopy. The mortality rate of the MI group was significantly higher than that of the HBO group. No difference was noted in the myocardial infarction size. The oxidized/reduced glutathione ratio and peroxiredoxin were significantly higher in the SH and MI when compared to the HBO group. Superoxide dismutase enzymes and catalase were significantly higher in the HBO group compared to the MI and SH groups. 3‑Nitrotyrosine and the superoxide radical were significantly lower in the HBO group compared to these in the MI and SH groups. These data demonstrated that hyperbaric oxygenation therapy decreased mortality by improving redox control in the hearts of rats in the acute phase of myocardial infarction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mesenteric ischaemia results from a lack of adequate blood flow to and oxygenation of the mesentery and intestines. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) on the healing process in intestinal mucosa of rats undergoing mesenteric ischaemia and reperfusion. METHODS Thirty-two Wistar-Albino rats were divided into four groups of eight: 1) ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R); 2) sham operation; 3) I/R+HBOT started 6 hours after reperfusion; 4) I/R+HBOT started 12 hours after reperfusion. In the I/R groups, a vascular clamp was placed across the superior mesenteric artery to occlude arterial circulation for 60 minutes, followed by reperfusion. A dose of HBOT consisted of 100% oxygen breathing for 90 minutes at 2.5 atmospheres absolute pressure. Thirteen doses of HBOT were administered after ischaemia. The rats were sacrificed on the eighth day, and their intestinal tissues were harvested for histopathologic analysis. The tissue levels of catalase, malondialdehyde, and glutathione were determined. RESULTS The histopathological scores (HSCORE) were consistent with macroscopic examinations. The scores were significantly higher (worse) in Group 1 compared to Group 2, Group 3, and Group 4 (for all comparisons, P < 0.05). Group 4's HSCORE was significantly higher than those of Group 2 and Group 3 (for both comparisons P < 0.05). Group 3's HSCOREs were only marginally higher than Group 2. Group 3 exhibited higher glutathione levels than Group 1 (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences across the groups with respect to malondialdehyde and catalase levels. CONCLUSION A beneficial effect of HBOT was observed on oxidative stress and inflammation in acute mesenteric ischaemia-reperfusion.

Abstract
The present study aimed to analyze the effects of reperfusion of a distant coronary artery on cardiac function, the ultrastructure, and the molecular environment of the remote myocardium immediately after the completion of myocardial regional necrosis: delayed reperfusion (DR). Additionally, the effects of prior exercise on the outcomes of DR were investigated. Female rats with permanent occlusion or delayed reperfusion were randomly assigned to an exercise (swimming, 1 h/day, 5 days/week for 8 weeks) or sedentary protocol. Thus, the study included the following four groups: sedentary permanent occlusion, exercise permanent occlusion, sedentary delayed reperfusion, and exercise delayed reperfusion. The descending coronary artery was occluded for 1 h. Reperfusion was confirmed by contrast echocardiography, and the rats were observed for 4 weeks. Permanent occlusion and DR caused similar myocardial infarction sizes among the four groups. Interestingly, exercise significantly decreased the mortality rate. Delayed reperfusion resulted in significant benefits, including enhanced hemodynamics and papillary muscle contraction, as well as reduced apoptosis and collagen content. Protein calcium kinetics did not change. Meanwhile, developed tension and the Frank–Starling mechanism were enhanced, suggesting that calcium sensitivity was intensified in myofilaments. Remarkable remote myocardial benefits occurred after distant DR, and prior exercise intensified cardiac recovery. Our findings provide valuable information about DR. Our data might explain the better clinical outcomes in recent studies showing that late reperfusion could improve heart failure in patients with myocardial infarction. In conclusion, DR has remote myocardial benefits, including inotropism enhancement, pulmonary congestion reduction, and collagen and apoptosis attenuation, which are enhanced by prior exercise.

Abstract
Myocardial infarction (MI), which occurs often due to acute ischemia followed by reflow, is associated with irreversible loss (death) of cardiomyocytes. If left untreated, MI will lead to progressive loss of viable cardiomyocytes, deterioration of cardiac function, and congestive heart failure. While supplemental oxygen therapy has long been in practice to treat acute MI, there has not been a clear scientific basis for the observed beneficial effects. Further, there is no rationale for the amount or duration of administration of supplemental oxygenation for effective therapy. The goal of the present study was to determine an optimum oxygenation protocol that can be clinically applicable for treating acute MI. Using EPR oximetry, we studied the effect of exposure to supplemental oxygen cycling (OxCy) administered by inhalation of 21–100% oxygen for brief periods (15–90 min), daily for 5 days, using a rat model of acute MI. Myocardial oxygen tension (pO2), cardiac function and pro-survival/apoptotic signaling molecules were used as markers of treatment outcome. OxCy resulted in a significant reduction of infarct size and improvement of cardiac function. An optimal condition of 30-min OxCy with 95% oxygen + 5% CO2 under normobaric conditions was found to be effective for cardioprotection.

Abstract
Background Gender can influence post-infarction cardiac remodeling. Objective To evaluate whether gender influences left ventricular (LV) remodeling and
integrin-linked kinase (ILK) after myocardial infarction (MI). Methods Female and male Wistar rats were assigned to one of three groups: sham, moderate
MI (size: 20-39% of LV area), and large MI (size: ≥40% of LV area). MI was
induced by coronary occlusion, and echocardiographic analysis was performed after
six weeks to evaluate MI size as well as LV morphology and function. Real-time
RT-PCR and Western blot were used to quantify ILK in the myocardium. Results MI size was similar between genders. MI resulted in systolic dysfunction and
enlargement of end-diastolic as well as end-systolic dimension of LV as a function
of necrotic area size in both genders. Female rats with large MI showed a lower
diastolic and systolic dilatation than the respective male rats; however, LV
dysfunction was similar between genders. Gene and protein levels of ILK were
increased in female rats with moderate and large infarctions, but only male rats
with large infarctions showed an altered ILK mRNA level. A negative linear
correlation was evident between LV dimensions and ILK expression in female rats
with large MI. Conclusions Post-MI ILK expression is altered in a gender-specific manner, and higher ILK
levels found in females may be sufficient to improve LV geometry but not LV
function.
