Effects of deer, mice and dwarf bamboo on the emergence, survival and growth of Abies homolepis (Piceaceae) seedlings

Maling bamboo (Yushania maling) overdominance alters forest structure and composition in Khangchendzonga landscape, Eastern Himalaya

The Khangchendzonga Landscape (KL), a part of 'Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot', is known for its unique biodiversity assemblage. In recent years, the KL is experiencing threats to biodiversity due to the biological overdominance of native Maling bamboo (Yushania maling). In the present study, we investigated the impacts of the overdominance of Y. maling on the forest composition of Singalila National Park (SNP), Eastern Himalaya, India. Elevational habitats 2400 to 3400 m asl were sampled by laying 69 (10 m × 10 m) forest plots including 51 bamboo plots and 18 non-bamboo plots. Bamboo plots showed significantly (p < 0.05) low species richness and density in both shrub and herb layers which further manifested the low seedling density. Generalized Additive Model (GAM) estimated a significant (p < 0.0001) decline in species richness and density with increasing bamboo density in SNP. Our study projects the overdominance of Y. maling has a significant negative impact on forest structure and composition. Therefore, management of invasiveness of Y. maling is essential through its optimized removal from the protected areas and utilization in making handicrafts, paper industries etc. to create ecological and economic benefits. Further long-term studies assessing the impacts of Y. maling overdominance on forest ecosystems and soil dynamics are recommended.

Long-term changes in atmospheric nitrogen deposition and stream water nitrate leaching from forested watersheds in western Japan

Japan receives nitrogenous air pollutants via long-range transport from China. However, emissions of nitrogenous air pollutants in China have stabilized or decreased in recent years. This study examined both the long-term trends in atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition from the 1990s to the 2010s and the response of stream water nitrate (NO₃^-) leaching from forested areas in western Japan. A long-term (1992-2018) temporal analysis of atmospheric N deposition in Fukuoka (western Japan) was conducted. Atmospheric bulk N deposition was collected at forested sites in a suburban forest (S_west) and a rural forest (R_west) in western Japan during 2009-2018. Stream water samples were also collected from four locations at sites S_west and R_west during the same period. Results showed that atmospheric N deposition in Fukuoka started to decrease from the mid-2000s at an annual rate of -2.5% yr^-1. The decrease in atmospheric N deposition was attributable mainly to decreased atmospheric ammonium (NH₄⁺) deposition, which caused greater contribution of NO₃^- deposition to atmospheric N deposition. Concentrations of NO₃^- in the stream water samples from three of the four locations decreased significantly at an annual rate of -3.7 to -0.7% yr^-1. However, stream water NO₃^- concentrations increased in one watershed where understory vegetation has been deteriorating owing to the increased deer population. This might weaken the recovery of N leaching from forested areas.

Survival rate and environmental response of current-year seedlings of the temperate liana Wisteria floribunda across a heterogeneous environment

Lianas have a huge influence on forest structure and function. However, it is unclear how the surrounding environment affects the establishment of liana seedlings in temperate forests. We addressed the following questions: (1) Can current-year seedlings persist under a closed canopy? (2) Do current-year seedlings form aggregated distribution and how has their spatial distribution varied over the years? (3) How does the light condition, soil moisture content, forest floor litter, understory vegetation, and the distance from the conspecific adults affect the establishment and survival of seedlings? We examined the distribution pattern and survivorship of current-year seedlings of the temperate liana species, Wisteria floribunda, across a heterogeneous environment for 6 years using 1 m² sub-quadrats (n = 651) in a 6 ha plot within the Ogawa Forest Reserve, an old-growth, temperate, deciduous forest in central Japan. In total, 908 current-year seedlings were observed during the study period, 87% of which emerged in 2014. Over half (56%) of these seedlings survived until 1 year after germination, which was relatively high compared with other tree species in this forest. The seedlings formed significantly aggregated distribution, but the degree of aggregation decreased over time. The number of emerged seedlings was negatively associated with the presence of dwarf bamboo (Sasa borealis) and the distance from the nearest conspecific adult. However, the survival rate of the seedlings was negatively associated with the presence of dwarf bamboo and soil moisture content and was positively associated with the openness of the canopy and the distance from the nearest conspecific adult. An enhanced survival rate under more intense light conditions and the ability to persist within the shaded understory may be important for the survival of this species in the earlier stage of the life history.
