Abstract
The aging process induces alterations in the body, resulting in changes in both health-related fitness and specific anthropometric measures. These changes often pose health risks for older adults. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether there is an association between anthropometric indices and muscular, motor, and cardiorespiratory components of health-related fitness in active European older adults. This study included 2687 European older adults, comprising 1999 women and 688 men, with an average age of 70.05 ± 5.5 years. The assessment included health-related fitness using the Senior Fitness Test and anthropometric indices, such as the body adiposity index, body mass index, conicity index, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio, among others. The results indicated that gender significantly influences the values of physical performance and anthropometric parameters, making them incomparable. The degree of correlation between anthropometric indices and muscular, motor, and cardiorespiratory components of fitness depends on each anthropometric index analysed. The anthropometric index most correlated with physical fitness performance parameters is the waist-to-height ratio (WHR), followed by the body mass index (BMI). Cardiorespiratory endurance and balance are the two physical parameters most correlated with anthropometric indices.

Abstract
Background The association between physical fitness performance tests and anthropometric indices is not clear. The study aims to explore the association between physical fitness performance and anthropometric indices in Taiwanese community-dwelling adults. This may help in monitoring anthropometric indices to improve physical fitness. Methods We recruited 2216 participants aged 23–64 years between 2014 and 2017. Physical fitness performance, including abdominal muscular endurance (60-s sit-up test), flexibility (sit-and-reach test), and cardiorespiratory endurance (3-min step test), was evaluated in all participants. The association of the physical fitness performance and anthropometric indices, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), was analyzed using linear regression, with adjustments for age and gender. Results Body mass index was negatively associated with abdominal muscular endurance (p < 0.001) and cardiorespiratory endurance (p < 0.001). Neither BMI, WC, WHR, nor WHtR were significantly associated with flexibility. Abdominal muscle endurance, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory endurance were significantly lower in obese participants when obesity was defined using a BMI of ≥27, 30, and 35 kg/m2. Participants with central obesity that was defined as WC ≥ 90 cm in men and 80 cm in women and WHtR ≥ 0.6 had lower abdominal muscular endurance than those without central obesity. Conclusion Body mass index is associated with abdominal muscular endurance and cardiorespiratory endurance in a reverse J-shaped manner. None of the anthropometric indices are significantly associated with flexibility. Obesity defined by BMI is linked to worse physical fitness performance and obesity defined using WHtR is linked to lower abdominal muscular endurance in Taiwanese community-dwelling adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Whether the association between obesity-related anthropometric indices and multimorbidity differs by age among Chinese older adults (aged 65+) is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) with multimorbidity among the young-old (aged 65-79) and old-old (aged 80+) adults. DESIGN Cross-sectional population-based study. SETTING Shandong province on the eastern coast of China. PARTICIPANTS 5493 subjects aged 65 years or above. MEASUREMENTS Details on sociodemographics, lifestyle characteristics and chronic conditions were collected using a structured questionnaire. The respondents were assessed with anthropometric measurements including height, weight, WC, hip circumference. RESULTS The overall prevalence of multimorbidity in older adults (aged 65+) was 35.2%. The BMI-obesity, WC-obesity and WHR-obesity rates were 7.4%, 57.5% and 80.4%, respectively. In the young-old adults (aged 65-79), the likelihood of multimorbidity was more than two times higher among the BMI-obese than the BMI-normal population (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.66 to 2.60). Similar but less strong associations were found for the WC-obese and WHR-obese young-old population (OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.42 to 1.81; OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.56, respectively). For the old-old group (aged 80+), the BMI-obese, WC-obese and WHR-obese had a higher likelihood of having multimorbidity compared with the normal weight category (OR 2.10, 95% CI 0.96 to 4.57; OR 1.75, 95% CI 1.21 to 2.54; OR 2.15, 95% CI 1.18 to 3.93, respectively). CONCLUSION BMI-obesity, WC-obesity and WHR-obesity were associated with a greater risk of multimorbidity, and the associations were different between the young-old and the old-old adults. These age differences need to be considered in assessing healthy body weight in old age. These findings may be vital for public health surveillance, prevention and management strategies for multimorbidity in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) increases each year, and obesity is an important risk factor for CKD. The main anthropometric indicators currently reflecting obesity are body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), but the rationality and merits of various indicators vary. This article aims to find whether the WHtR is a more suitable physical measurement that can predict CKD. METHODS Pubmed, embase, the cochrane library, and web of science were systematically searched for articles published between 1998 and 2019 screening CKD through physical indicators. Two reviewers independently screened the literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted the data, and evaluated the quality of the methodology included in the study. Meta-analysis used the Stata 12.0 software. RESULTS Nine studies were included, with a total of 202,283 subjects. Meta-analysis showed that according to the analysis of different genders in 6 studies, regardless of sex, WHtR was the area with the largest area under the curve (AUC). Except WHtR and visceral fat index (VFI) in women which showed no statistical difference, WHtR and other indicators were statistically different. In three studies without gender-based stratification, the area under the curve AUC for WHtR remained the largest, but only the difference between WHtR and BMI was statistically significant. When the Chinese population was considered as a subgroup, the area under the curve AUC for WHtR was the largest. Except for WHtR and VFI which showed no statistical difference in women, there was a statistically significant difference between WHtR and other indicators in men and women. CONCLUSION WHtR could be better prediction for CKD relative to other physical measurements. It also requires higher-quality prospective studies to verify the clinical application of WHtR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Observational studies examining the relationship between metabolic syndrome and the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) have reported inconclusive results. This meta-analysis was performed to resolve these controversies. METHODS The MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PubMed databases were systematically searched from their inception until March 2016 to identify all relevant studies. Risk estimates and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations of MetS and its components with CKD risk were extracted and pooled using a random-effects model. RESULTS A total of 66 studies, including 18 prospective cohorts and 48 cross-sectional studies, with 699 065 CKD patients and 11 109 003 participants were included in the meta-analysis. When all definitions were pooled, the presence of MetS was associated with a significant 50% increase of CKD risk (OR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.43-1.56), with evidence of moderate heterogeneity (I2 = 72.3%, P < .001). The risk of CKD associated with MetS was higher in studies using the American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute criteria (OR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.25-2.10) compared with those using the Adult Treatment Panel III (OR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.42-1.56) and the International Diabetes Federation (OR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.22-1.41) definitions. This relationship was independent of diabetes status. Moreover, all individual components of the MetS were significantly associated with CKD, and their coexistence resulted in an escalating dose-response relationship. The sensitivity and subgroup analyses established the stability of the findings. CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis strongly suggests that the metabolic syndrome and its components are independently associated with the increased risk of CKD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most serious complications in obesity-induced type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) are recognised as sensitive obesity measures. We aimed to investigate the association of BMI, WC, WHR and WHtR with CKD prevalence in overweight T2DM patients. DESIGN, SUBJECTS AND METHODS We obtained 125 overweight T2DM patients coming for their in-patient annual visit. Metabolic profiles and anthropometric indices were measured and calculated. Urine albumin excretion (UAE) was determined as the mean of 24-h urine from two consecutive days. Serum creatinine was measured from fasting blood sample in order to calculate the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration formula. Patients were divided into two groups according to CKD prevalence. RESULTS Thirty-six (28.8%) patients met diagnostic criteria for CKD. The WHtR and WC were higher in the group with CKD. WHtR correlated positively with UAE (r = 0.828, p < 0.001) and negatively with eGFR (r = -0.262, p = 0.015). No significant correlation was observed with WC in relation to UAE (p = 0.335) nor eGFR (p = 0.121). WHtR yielded the significant and great OR in association with nephropathy after adjustment for all confounding risk factors. CONCLUSION WHtR might be of a greater importance in association to CKD compared to other anthropometric parameters that indicate central obesity. Whether it is a best measure of central obesity and its exact role in CKD pathology is yet to be investigated.

Abstract
Weight excess and/or central body fat distribution are associated with increased long-term renal risk, not only in subjects with renal disease or renal transplant recipients, but also in the general population. As the prevalence of weight excess is rising worldwide, this may become a main renal risk factor on a population basis, even more so because the risk extends to the overweight range. Understanding the mechanisms of this detrimental effect of weight excess on the kidneys is needed in order to design preventive treatment strategies. The increased risk associated with weight excess is partly attributed to associated comorbid conditions, such as hypertension, dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance and diabetes; however, current evidence supports a direct pathogenetic role for renal haemodynamics as well. Weight excess is associated with an altered renal haemodynamic profile, i.e. an increased glomerular filtration rate relative to effective renal plasma flow, resulting in an increased filtration fraction (FF). This renal haemodynamic profile is considered to reflect glomerular hyperfiltration and glomerular hypertension, resulting from a dysbalance between afferent and efferent arterial vasomotor balance. This unfavorable renal haemodynamic profile was found to be associated with renal outcome in experimental models and in human renal transplant recipients, and is associated with a blunted sodium excretion, and reversible by weight loss, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system blockade or by dietary sodium restriction. More recent evidence showed that a central body fat distribution is also associated with an increased FF, even independent of overall weight excess. In this review, we provide an overview on current literature on the impact of weight excess and central body fat distribution on the renal haemodynamic profile in humans, and its possible role in progressive renal damage.

Abstract
Central distribution of body fat is associated with a higher risk of renal disease, but whether it is the distribution pattern or the overall excess weight that underlies this association is not well understood. Here, we studied the association between waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), which reflects central adiposity, and renal hemodynamics in 315 healthy persons with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 24.9 kg/m(2) and a mean (125)I-iothalamate GFR of 109 ml/min per 1.73 m(2). In multivariate analyses, WHR was associated with lower GFR, lower effective renal plasma flow, and higher filtration fraction, even after adjustment for sex, age, mean arterial pressure, and BMI. Multivariate models produced similar results regardless of whether the hemodynamic measures were indexed to body surface area. Thus, these results suggest that central body fat distribution, independent of BMI, is associated with an unfavorable pattern of renal hemodynamic measures that could underlie the increased renal risk reported in observational studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is a risk factor that has been associated scientifically with hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cancer and other life threatening diseases. The results of some studies have also shown that obesity is an independent risk factor for the development and progression of renal damage. OBJECTIVES The aim of the current study is to define which general and central obesity anthropometric indices are better predictors for ceratinine clearance (CC) in healthy, normal and obese Iranian women. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this case-controlled study, a total of 62 healthy, normal and obese women from 18 to 30 years of age in Zahedan City, the Islamic Republic of Iran, were studied. The subjects were classified into two groups; case group (31 subjects) of healthy obese women (30 ≤ BMI ≤ 39.9 kg/m(2)) and control group (31 subjects) of healthy normal women (18.5 ≤ BMI ≤ 24.9 kg/m(2)). An assessment of body mass index (BMI) was considered as a general obesity index and an assessment of waist circumference (WC) and waist to hip ratio (WHR) were considered as central obesity indices. A measurement of CC was considered for renal function. RESULTS The means of CC in subjects with increased BMI, WC, and WHR were significantly higher than those in subjects with normal BMI, WC, and WHR. Pearson correlation coefficient revealed that there was a stronger correlation between CC with WC than with WHR and BMI (r = 0.4, P = 0.009; r = 0.4, P = 0.01 in the case and control groups, respectively). CONCLUSIONS It is suggested that in clinical practice, WC can be used as a better predictor of CC than WHR and BMI in both normal and obese, healthy women.
