Penile gangrene associated with extensive Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) of the penis is a well-recognized manifestation of the acquired immunodeficency syndrome. Extensive KS of the genitalia progressed and caused penile gangrene in 2 cases. Management is palliative with urinary diversion via percutaneous suprapubic cystostomy.

The management of meatal obstruction due to Kaposi's sarcoma of the glans penis

Kaposi's sarcoma involving the glans penis was first described in 1902, with a subsequent report of meatal disease in 1943. With the recognition of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, genital lesions are becoming more frequently reported, with 51 cases cited in the literature. To date only 4 additional cases of meatal or fossa navicularis involvement have appeared in the literature, 3 of which described difficulty with micturition. We report a case of Kaposi's sarcoma involving the urethral meatus resulting in documented outflow obstruction, relieved with simple urethral serial dilation performed on an outpatient basis followed by intermittent obturation. We believe that this therapy represents a low risk, cost-effective treatment modality aimed at resolution of symptoms and alleviation of a potential source of infection in the patient with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related Kaposi's sarcoma of the male genitalia: management with radiation therapy

Kaposi's sarcoma of the genitalia is an infrequent complication of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome but it often is difficult to manage. A total of 19 men (mean age 39 years) with penile and/or scrotal lesions underwent radiotherapy at dosages of 600 to 3,000 cGy. in fractions of 150 to 800 cGy. Of the patients 6 achieved a complete and 10 a partial response, while 2 had no response and 1 died too soon after treatment to be evaluated. Recurrences were noted in 8 patients, 7 of whom received additional radiation (1 patient had 2 recurrences and both responded). Of the retreatments 3 effected complete and 4 partial responses. Over-all, of 25 evaluable treatment courses 9 complete (36%) and 14 partial (56%) responses yielded a total response rate of 92%. There was 1 complication, a skin ulceration. Radiation therapy is well tolerated and will result in effective palliation in the majority of patients with Kaposi's sarcoma of the genitalia.

Kaposi sarcoma of penis and genitalia: a disease of our times

Penile and/or genital involvement may be an early manifestation of AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma. Diagnosis may be suggested by history, and epidemiologic and sociologic data. Precise diagnosis can be documented by the urologist by early recognition and biopsy of genital lesions. Early awareness and treatment may control this potentially virulent disease.

Effective outpatient treatment of Kaposi's sarcoma of the urethral meatus using the neodymium:YAG laser

An unusual presentation of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)--a case of Kaposi's sarcoma involving the glans penis and fossa navicularis--was treated palliatively with neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser photoablation. A single outpatient treatment removed the two lesions and restored the patient's ability to void normally. The Nd:YAG laser proved extremely useful, providing effective outpatient therapy with minimal morbidity and excellent local results.

Kaposi's sarcoma of the penis in a patient with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome

We report a case of secondary Kaposi's sarcoma of the penis and the acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Recognition of the penile lesion as being secondary Kaposi's sarcoma is paramount, since the clinical course appears to be dependent upon systemic disease. Local therapy is reserved for palliation upon disease recurrence.

Kaposi sarcoma limited to glans penis

Two cases of Kaposi sarcoma are presented. In each case the lesion had a bluish discoloration and was painless. Excision of lesions with wider margins was adequate therapy.

Kaposi's sarcoma with extensive silent internal involvement

A case of Kaposi's sarcoma is presented in which extensive diagnostic studies failed to detect the cardiac, pulmonary, intestinal and nodal involvement that was found to be present at autopsy.

Epidemiology of cancer of the penis

World-wide incidences of penile cancer are reviewed and epidemiologic factors including ciecumcision, hygiene, phimosis, smegma, irritation, infection, veneral disease, viruses, environment, race, immune response, trauma, and age are discussed. The lowest rates appear in groups practicing infant circumcision and in areas where standards of sexual hygiene are high.
