Ancestral Mechanisms in Modern Environments : Impact of Competition and Stressors on Body Image and Dieting Behavior

It is commonly assumed that the desire for a thin female physique and its pathological expression in eating disorders result from a social pressure for thinness. However, such widespread behavior may be better understood not merely as the result of arbitrary social pressure, but as an exaggerated expression of behavior that may have once been adaptive. The reproductive suppression hypothesis suggests that natural selection shaped a mechanism for adjusting female reproduction to socioecological conditions by altering the amount of body fat. In modern Western culture, social and ecological cues, which would have signaled the need for temporary postponement of reproduction in ancestral environments, may now be experienced to an unprecedented intensity and duration.

Measuring physical status and timing in early adolescence: A developmental perspective

Recently, the timing-of-events model typically used for exploring adult development has been proposed for studying early adolescence and the pubertal processes occurring then. As a consequence, new interest has been generated about the psychological effects of being early, on time, or late in sexual maturation during early adolescence. A major issue has to do with the choice of maturational events to study, since puberty is a process involving numerous events, all of which have a different developmental course. This paper reviews some of the maturational events that are applicable in studying psychological effects of pubertal status and timing. Nine changes are reviewed (bone, height, weight, body fat, breast, body hair, penile, testicular, and menarcheal changes) in terms of measurement techniques, psychometric properties, and intercorrelations with other pubertal events. In addition, the usefulness of each measure for psychological research on maturational timing and status is discussed. Finally, how pubertal measures may be incorporated into a developmental perspective is considered, especially with regard to rate, duration, and asynchrony of pubertal changes.

Behavior analysis in the era of medicalization: the state of the science and recommendations for practitioners

Recent decades have witnessed an increase in biological explanations of common disorders such as depression and anxiety, a phenonmenon termed "medicalization" (Conrad, 2007). Behavior analysts may find it difficult to implement non-drug treatment with a populace that has become inundated with biological explanations and a preference for medication as the treatment of choice. Research frequently cited in support of medicalization includes studies of drug effectiveness, as well as family studies and studies of brain structure and function. Methodological and interpretation difficulties within those bodies of research are described and recommendations are made so that behavioral practitioners may function optimally within the culture of biological causation.

Psychological effects of the body maturation rate in the puberty

During the last decades a large number of studies on the effects of pubertal timing on psychological functioning of adolescents have been published. This review of the literature indicates that early maturation in girls and off-time maturation in boys are associated with problems in psychological adaptation. The methodological causes of the inconsistency of the results in this field of study are examined. Some of the possible directions for future research in this area are considered.

Final height in girls with untreated constitutional delay in growth and puberty

During a 10-year period, 23 girls compared to 118 boys presented with constitutional delay in growth and puberty. Of these girls, 15 were followed to final height to determine the outcome of the untreated condition in terms of both growth and psychological well-being. At presentation chronological age was 13.2 (1.7) years [mean (S.D.)], bone age delay 2.7 (0.9) years, standing height standard deviation score (SDS) -3.4 (0.9), and predicted adult height (PAH) SDS -1.3 (0.7) (Tanner-Whitehouse II method). Final height SDS was -1.5 (0.8) measured at 18.9 (2.6) years of age. Mean age at menarche was 15.6 (0.9) years. There was no significant difference between final adult height (FH) and PAH but there was a significant difference between FH and target height (P less than 0.001). Psychological questionnaires revealed no significant difference in self-esteem, marital or employment status between the patient and control groups. There was no significant correlation between self-esteem and FH but 80% felt their growth delay had affected success either at school, work or socially. Of the patients, 50% would have preferred treatment to advance their growth spurt. This study demonstrates that girls with constitutional delay in growth and puberty reached their PAH, although this was lower than the midparental heights. The girls also experienced significant distress due to delayed growth and puberty and treatment to advance growth should be considered more frequently.

Pubertal timing and grade effects on adjustment

Effects on adjustment of biological maturation and social timing were compared using data from a longitudinal sample of 335 young adolescents, who were followed from the sixth through eighth grades. Biological maturation was estimated from the relative timing of the adolescent growth spurt. Social timing was assessed by grade in school. Five adjustment constructs were examined: school achievement (course grades in five subjects), family relations (a 17-item scale), peer relations (a 10-item scale), body image (an 11-item scale), impulse control (an 8-item scale), and psychopathology (an 11-item emotional tone scale and an 11-item general psychopathology scale). All but one adjustment construct showed grade effects, but only three of the six constructs showed pubertal timing effects. There were no grade by pubertal timing effects. Although there were gender differences for some of the adjustment constructs, there were no gender by pubertal timing effects. The results are discussed in terms of the life-span developmental perspective.
