Abstract
Environmental noise is one of the main sources of pollution in today’s modern world. Health effects associated with noise depend on both environmental exposure and individuals’ noise sensitivity. However, still little is known as to why some children are more noise sensitive than others. Studies to date have focused on adult populations and have not considered both cognitive and personality factors when explaining noise sensitivity. The current research investigates individual differences in noise sensitivity among elementary school children, with the aim of shedding light on its underlying mechanisms. Study 1 (n = 112) validated a novel questionnaire assessing children’s reactions to classroom noise against two measures of noise sensitivity that are commonly used in adult populations. Study 2 (n = 237) investigated how children’s reactions to classroom noise covaried with their effortful control and prosocial skills, both measured through a teacher report. Prosocial skills were not related to children’s reactions to noise. However, children with lower effortful control skills reported more negative reactions to classroom noise. Given the importance of effortful control skills to succeed at school, children at risk of school difficulty might also be the ones who are particularly vulnerable to noise.

Abstract
We explored differences in the course of physiological functions and in the subjective evaluations in response to listening to a 7-min recording of the sound of a chainsaw and to the sounds of a forest. A Biofeedback 2000x-pert apparatus was used for continual recording of the following physiological functions in 50 examined persons: abdominal and thoracic respiration and their amplitude and frequency, electrodermal activity (skin conductance level), finger skin temperature, heart rate (pulse, blood volume pulse and blood volume pulse amplitude) and heart rate variability (HRV). The group of 25 subjects listening to the sound of a chainsaw exhibited significantly lower values of blood volume pulse amplitude, lower values in peak alpha frequency HRV and higher values in peak high-frequency HRV. In the time interval from 80 s to 209 s, in which the two groups showed the greatest differences, lower values of blood volume pulse were also recorded while listening to the sound of a chainsaw. Listening to the sound of a chainsaw is associated with a greater feeling of fatigue and higher tension, while listening to the sounds of a forest is even considered to elicit feelings of improved learning abilities. The assumption that listening to the sound of a chainsaw results in higher defense arousal was confirmed. The greater variability which is exhibited by a majority of physiological functions while listening to the forest sounds may also be an innovative finding. It seems that there are two types of arousal (sympathetic and parasympathetic) following from correlations between physiological functions and subjective assessment. Low values of blood volume pulse amplitude are especially important from the health perspective. They correspond to the amount of vasoconstriction which occurs in the endothelial dysfunction related to increased mortality, incidence of myocardial infarction, leg atherosclerosis and topically to COVID-19.

Abstract
We investigate the short-term association between multidimensional acoustic characteristics of everyday ambient sound and continuous mean heart rate. We used in-market data from hearing aid users who logged ambient acoustics via smartphone-connected hearing aids and continuous mean heart rate in 5 min intervals from their own wearables. We find that acoustic characteristics explain approximately 4% of the fluctuation in mean heart rate throughout the day. Specifically, increases in ambient sound pressure intensity are significantly related to increases in mean heart rate, corroborating prior laboratory and short-term real-world data. In addition, increases in ambient sound quality-that is, more favourable signal to noise ratios-are associated with decreases in mean heart rate. Our findings document a previously unrecognized mixed influence of everyday sounds on cardiovascular stress, and that the relationship is more complex than is seen from an examination of sound intensity alone. Thus, our findings highlight the relevance of ambient environmental sound in models of human ecophysiology.

Abstract
Predicting the emotions evoked by generalized sound events is a relatively recent research domain which still needs attention. In this work a framework aiming to reveal potential similarities existing during the perception of emotions evoked by sound events and songs is presented. To this end the following are proposed: (a) the usage of temporal modulation features, (b) a transfer learning module based on an echo state network, and (c) a k-medoids clustering algorithm predicting valence and arousal measurements associated with generalized sound events. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is demonstrated after a thoroughly designed experimental phase employing both sound and music data. The results demonstrate the importance of transfer learning in the specific field and encourage further research on approaches which manage the problem in a synergistic way.

Abstract
The Hydrotrack, a treadmill immersed in a water bath, is designed to provide an in-office approach to aquatic therapy. 24 clinical clients in an outpatient sports medicine practice were invited to use the Hydrotrack as part of their rehabilitation treatment. Our purpose was to describe the way(s) in which the Hydrotrack is useful in rehabilitation treatment. Exercise protocols designed by a physical therapist were used for each subject. We monitored an external criterion, heart rate, to measure the subjects' exertion during the exercise process. Self-reported ratings of exercise efficacy and exertion were also used to quantify the subjects' performance on the Hydrotrack. Heart-rate values and self-report ratings supported the usefulness of this device in physical therapy.

Abstract
Electromyography (EMG) reflecting forehead muscle tension, heart rate (HR) and skin conductance (SC) were continuously recorded in dental phobic subjects (n = 126) and controls (n = 25) during exposure of dental and neutral video scenes in order to explore the relationship between dental fear and psychophysiological responses. This relationship is far from well established, and the present investigation was performed to contribute to the understanding of the psychophysiology of dental fear. Dental phobics had a mean anxiety level of 17.3 as measured by Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) and refused conventional dental treatment. Control subjects reported regular dental treatment and a DAS score below population average (DAS < 8). Psychophysiological data was reduced to level (mean) and reactivity (means of intraindividual variations). Results showed that physiologic reactions to fear-relevant conditions measured by HR and EMG reflected degree of dental fear, and that neutral conditions, when presented for the second and third time, induced lower psychophysiologic reactions in phobics than in controls. Recordings of SC indicated that dental phobics may differ from individuals suffering from other types of specific phobia by showing weakened autonomic responsiveness to threat.

Abstract
This study assesses cardiovascular and subjective effects of traffic noise and the mediator role that negative self-statements play. Eighty-four female students underwent a Physiological Reaction Test to two 15 min presentations of high intensity traffic noise (85-95 db) under two noise conditions, with and without negative self-statements. Half of the subjects were given specific instructions to increase the credibility of the self-statements. Dependent variables were heart rate (HR), blood volume pulse amplitude from both temporal arteries and subjective tension. Traffic noise provoked subjective tension and cardiovascular responses that did not habituate either within or between noise presentations. Negative self-statements had the greatest effect on HR. In fact, this response habituated to a second noise presented only when this condition was without negative self-statements. Instructions increased the effect of the self-statements only on the left temporal artery and also increased subjective tension. The implications of this physiological reactivity in psychosomatic problems and the importance of negative self-statements are discussed.

Abstract
A sample of 77 women of high and low noise sensitivity in 1977, living in areas of high and low exposure to aircraft noise, were interviewed in the community in 1980. High, intermediate and low noise sensitive women were compared, using measures of blood pressure, heart rate, skin conductance, hearing threshold, uncomfortable loudness level and magnitude estimation of six tones. These physiological measures did not clearly distinguish different noise sensitivity groups, except that highly noise sensitive women had a consistently slower heart rate. Noise sensitivity was not related to auditory threshold. In the high aircraft noise area there were significantly more skin conductance responses than in the low aircraft noise area irrespective of noise sensitivity. This may be the result of chronic exposure to high aircraft noise.
