Olfactory Modulation of the Contingent Negative Variation to Auditory Stimuli

Although pleasantness is intrinsically related to the perception of odors it is difficult to objectively assess odor-induced pleasantness. To evaluate the effects of odors of different valences on the contingent negative variation (CNV) in a younger and an older population. Data from 62 participants (27 men, 35 women) were included. Two age groups with Age group 1 (YOUNG) had 30 subjects within age 18-30 years and age group 2 (OLD) had 32 subjects with age >40 years. Pre-testing was performed to acquaint subjects with the experimental tasks and their environment. Subjects received "Sniffin' Sticks" odor identification tests and a standardized medical history to ascertain normosmia. In addition, they also took questionnaires relating to importance of the sense of smell and personality traits. CNV was elicited with two auditory stimuli, S1 followed by S2 at an interval of 2.4 s. Subjects were asked to push a button as fast as possible after they perceived S2. EEG was recorded from 4 positions of the 10-20 system (Fp2, Fz, Cz, and Pz). Four odors plus odorless air was presented in randomized order. The following main results emerged: (1) Consistent with the literature CNV showed a typical topographical distribution with the largest amplitude over the front-central recording sites. (2) 69% of subjects had consistent CNV for all conditions. (3) for some odor conditions CNV amplitudes exhibit a weak relation to odor pleasantness and associations with calmness. (4) CNV amplitude correlated negatively with reaction times. Overall, the results suggest the usefulness of CNV as an electrophysiological measure of cognition. However, in the present context, concomitantly applied odors of different hedonic tones exerted only minor effects on CNV. Thus, we conclude that odors have little or no effect on CNV.

A Behavioral and Electrophysiological Investigation of Effects of Visual Congruence on Olfactory Sensitivity During Habituation to Prolonged Odors

Congruent visual cues augment sensitivity to brief olfactory presentations and habituation of odor perception is modulated by central-cognitive processing including context. However, it is not known whether habituation to odors could interact with cross-modal congruent stimuli. The present research investigated the effect of visual congruence on odor detection sensitivity during continuous odor exposures. We utilized a multimethod approach, including subjective behavioral responses and reaction times (RTs; study 1) and electroencephalography (EEG, study 2). Study 1: 25 participants received 2-min presentations of moderate-intensity floral odor delivered via olfactometer with congruent (flower) and incongruent (object) image presentations. Participants indicated odor perception after each image. Detection sensitivity and RTs were analyzed in epochs covering the period of habituation. Study 2: 25 new participants underwent EEG recordings during 145-s blocks of odor presentations with congruent or incongruent images. Participants passively observed images and intermittently rated the perceived intensity of odor. Event-related potential analysis was utilized to evaluate brain processing related to odor–visual pairs across the period of habituation. Odor detection sensitivity and RTs were improved by congruent visual cues. Results highlighted a diminishing influence of visual congruence on odor detection sensitivity as habituation occurred. Event-related potential analysis revealed an effect of congruency on electrophysiological processing in the N400 component. This was only evident in early periods of odor exposure when perception was strong. For the first time, this demonstrates the modulation of central processing of odor–visual pairs by habituation. Frontal negativity (N400) responses encode the aspects of cross-modal congruence for odor–vision cross-modal tasks.

Differential effects of the hiba odor on CNV and MMN

The aim of this study was to objectively measure some psychophysiological effects of odors, particularly the effects of odors on the contingent negative variation (CNV) and the mismatch negativity (MMN). It is generally believed that CNV reflects arousal processes and MMN reflects activity in an automatic detection system. Sixteen females were exposed to the odor of Thujopsis dolabrata (hiba), a conifer. CNV was obtained with a foreperiod of 2 s in a traditional click-flash reaction-time (RT) paradigm. Auditory MMN was measured while the subject was reading a book with SOA fixed at 500 ms. The amplitude of the early and late CNV components were significantly larger and RT to the imperative stimulus (IS) was shorter in the aroma condition than in the absence-of-odor condition, but there was no significant difference in the amplitude of MMN obtained in the two conditions. Our results indicate that the odor generates a high level of arousal within the nervous system but does not have a significant effect on automatic information processing.

The application of electroencephalographic techniques to the study of human olfaction: a review and tutorial

The use of a variety of electrophysiological techniques to determine the effects of odor on the nervous system is reviewed. Methods and problems associated with the collection of on-going EEG, chemosensory event-related potentials, and contingent negative variation data are discussed in depth as is the use of odors as modulators of brain potentials produced by other senses. In addition, the advantages of several seldom used EEG analysis techniques are discussed with respect to the unique problems of understanding olfaction.

On the similarity of odor and language perception

The association between olfaction and language is discussed. The effects of odor on human behavior and cognitive processing are reviewed as are electrophysiological studies of odor/language interactions. Also reviewed are specific effects of odor administration on language-dependent tasks. The hypothesis is advanced that odor information processing shares some of the cortical resources used in processing language and that interference between these two types of stimuli occurs when they are simultaneously processed. The reason for this overlap in resources is thought to be due to the similarities in the spatio-temporal patterns produced in the neural coding of odors and language.

Traumatic brain injury assessed with olfactory event-related brain potentials

Olfactory event-related potentials (OERPs) were evaluated to develop an objective, quantitative assessment of sensory and cognitive olfactory loss following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Subjects included 25 TBI patients and 25 age/gender-matched healthy controls. Following standard clinical evaluation of smell function, TBI patients were divided into three groups: 12 anosmics (loss of smell), 6 hyposmics (reduced smell), and 7 normosmics (normal smell). Cognitive ability was assessed using the Trail Making Test (A and B). OERPs were recorded monopolarly from midline electrode sites using an amyl acetate stimulus with a 60-second interstimulus interval; subjects estimated the magnitude of each odor stimulus. Anosmic TBI patients were also tested with OERPs using ammonia to ensure trigeminal nerve function. Amyl acetate OERPs demonstrated that the sensory N1 and P2 amplitudes and the cognitive P3 amplitudes were absent in the anosmic TBI patients and greatly reduced in the hyposmic and normosmic TBI patients compared to healthy controls. The trigeminal OERPs from the anosmic TBI patients were within normal limits, indicating that the primary olfactory deficits were objectively measured with OERPs. The relationship between the OERPs and neuropsychologic test performance supports the cognitive loss associated with TBI. The present study lends support to the utility of OERPs as an objective tool for measuring sensory and cognitive loss after traumatic brain injury.

The effects of active and passive stimulation on chemosensory event-related potentials

During normal olfaction, stimulation is dependent upon nasal inhalation. When collecting chemosensory event-related potentials (CSERPs), inhalations may produce artifacts such as respiration-related brain potentials that confound interpretation of the data. To avoid this type of artifact, CSERPs have often been collected using stimulation that is independent of respiratory cycle. It is possible, however, that inspirations prime the olfactory tract for odor input, and traditional CSERP data acquisition techniques, obscure this neural preparation. To investigate this question, twelve subjects were tested using two different approaches to stimulation. Odorants (butanol 2% and 4%) were introduced into a warmed and humidified air stream and delivered to one nostril through a cannula. In one condition, subjects mouth-breathed and stimuli occurred asynchronously with respiratory cycle (passive). In the other condition, subjects inhaled through the nose and stimuli were delivered synchronously with nasal inhalations (active). CSERP data were collected from thirty scalp sites for 3 s following stimulation. Data were corrected for eye movements, smoothed, and averaged. Maximal amplitudes for an early negativity (N1) and later positivity (P2) were determined and submitted to separate analyses of variance. These analyses indicated that administration technique interacted with both odor concentration and recording site. Additionally, amplitude of P2 was greater in the passive condition. Such results suggest that the two administration techniques produce different neural processing of olfactory stimuli and that the passive technique may be better suited for determination of the integrity of the olfactory tract for single subjects because of its greater amplitude.
