Abstract
Bumblebees are important pollinators in agricultural ecosystems, but their abundance is declining globally. There is an urgent need to protect bumblebee health and their pollination services. Bumblebees possess specialized gut microbiota with potential to be used as probiotics to help defend at-risk bumblebee populations. However, evidence for probiotic benefits on bumblebees is lacking. Here, we evaluated how supplementation with Lactobacillus melliventris isolated from bumblebee gut affected the colony development of Bombus terrestris. This native strain colonized robustly and persisted long-term in bumblebees, leading to a significantly higher quality of offspring. Subsequently, the tyrosine pathway was upregulated in the brain and fat body, while the Wnt and mTOR pathways of the gut were downregulated. Notably, the field experiment in the greenhouse revealed the supplementation of L. melliventris led to a 2.5-fold increase in the bumblebee survival rate and a more than 10% increase in the number of flowers visited, indicating a better health condition and pollination ability in field conditions. Our study represents a first screening for the potential use of the native gut member, L. melliventris, as probiotic strains in hive supplement for bumblebee breeding, which may be a practical approach to improve immunity and hive health.

Abstract
Bacteria producing hydrolytic exoenzymes are of great importance considering their contribution to the host metabolism as well as for their various applications in industrial bioprocesses. In this work hydrolytic capacity of bacteria isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of Bombay duck (Harpadon nehereus) was analyzed and the enzyme-producing bacteria were genetically characterized. A total of twenty gut-associated bacteria, classified into seventeen different species, were isolated and screened for the production of protease, lipase, pectinase, cellulase and amylase enzymes. It was found that thirteen of the isolates could produce at least one of these hydrolytic enzymes among which protease was the most common enzyme detected in ten isolates; lipase in nine, pectinase in four, and cellulase and amylase in one isolate each. This enzymatic array strongly correlated to the previously reported eating behavior of Bombay duck. 16S rRNA gene sequence-based taxonomic classification of the enzyme-producing isolates revealed that the thirteen isolates were grouped into three different classes of bacteria consisting of eight different genera. Staphylococcus, representing ∼46% of the isolates, was the most dominant genus. Measurement of enzyme-production via agar diffusion technique revealed that one of the isolates which belonged to the genus Exiguobacterium, secreted the highest amount of lipolytic and pectinolytic enzymes, whereas a Staphylococcus species produced highest proteolytic activity. The Exiguobacterium sp. expressing a maximum of four hydrolases, appeared to be the most promising isolate of all.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate Enterobacter cloacae and Bacillus mojavensis, isolated from rainbow trout gut in the present study, as a probiotic to control yersiniosis disease. METHODS AND RESULTS A strain of Ent. cloacae and B. mojavensis, isolated from the digestive tract of rainbow trout had an antagonistic effect to Yersinia ruckeri, which causes yersiniosis. After feeding fish with 1 x 10(8) cells g(-1) probiotic containing feed for 60 days, the fish survival rate increased to 99.2% following challenge with Y. ruckeri compared with controls that had 35% survival rate. Effects of Ent. cloacae and B. mojavensis on weight gains and stimulation of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and hemoglobin were also evaluated in separate groups of fish fed probiotic containing feed for 2 months. Probiotic significantly affected white blood cells, hemoglobin and weight gains of the experimental fish. CONCLUSIONS Enterobacter cloacae and B. mojavensis, can be used to prevent and control yersiniosis disease. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY In conclusion, concomitant use of Ent. cloacae and B. mojavensis as a feed supplement is beneficial to rainbow trout. Use of these organisms can protect fish from yersiniosis and enhance digestibility and utilization of feed. Use of such probiotics may also limit the use of antibiotics and other chemicals in control and treatment of diseases, and thus contribute to the effort to reduce environmental contamination by residual antibiotics and chemicals.
