Kin-structured migration: Causes and consequences

Migration among local populations classically has been seen as the principal process retarding genetic microdifferentiation. However, as Sewall Wright pointed out long ago, migration may also act as a random differentiating force. In fact, when migrants comprise a biological kin group, migration may be considered a component of genetic drift. The causes of kin-structured migration (KSM) lie in the common, if not universal, tendency for kin to associate and cooperate. However, similar to genetic drift, KSM has its greatest effect in smaller populations and is most apparent in low-density fission-fusion societies such as the Yanomamo of South America and the Semai of Malaysia, and less salient in higher density, low-mobility populations such as those of the New Guinea Highlands. The evolutionary consequences of KSM begin with increased genetic variation among populations. Such intergroup variation provides a basis for group selection. The origin of larger-scale geographic differentiation can arise from kin-structured migrant groups colonizing new regions. Waves of colonizing kin-structured founder groups may produce gene frequency clines, mimicking demic diffusion and natural selection. Finally, because kin structuring reduces the effective size of a population, it may be speculated that the extremely small effective size inferred for ancestral populations of Homo sapiens may be an artifact of kin-structured demographically larger populations.

Matrix decomposition model for investigating prehistoric intracemetery biological variation

A matrix decomposition model for analyzing prehistoric intracemetery biological variability is presented. The model, based on the correlation between interindividual biological and burial distance matrices, provides an estimate of the number of distinct burial populations interred within a single cemetery, which effectively ameliorates identifiability problems typical of general variability analyses (Raemsch [1995] Ph.D. dissertation, SUNY at Albany). Unlike other methods for analyzing intrasite variability analysis (e.g., kinship analysis and microchronology), this method is not reliant on a priori subgroup definition. Assuming a kin-structured burial pattern, a residual matrix is defined based on the raw data matrices; the proportion of negative or zero residuals to the total number of residuals provides an estimate of the number of hidden subgroupings (lineages) within the cemetery. The comparative utility of the model is demonstrated on a series of protohistoric and historic period skeletal samples from the Georgia coast, where it demonstrated that the increase in phenotypic variability during the early mission period is the result of population aggregation at the missions and not necessarily genetic admixture between local and nonlocal groups.

Postmarital residence and biological variation at Pueblo Bonito

Although the social organization of many of the present-day pueblos of the American Southwest is well-described in the anthropological literature, many aspects of prehistoric Puebloan social organization have received limited attention since initial investigations of postmarital residence in the 1960s and 1970s. This paper examines postmarital residence at the Chaco Canyon great house of Pueblo Bonito, using biological data. Our findings are inconsistent with the previously well-accepted hypothesis that the Pueblo II and Pueblo III occupants of the San Juan Basin conformed to a socially prescribed pattern of matrilocal residence with matrilineal descent. Univariate variance differences for nine craniometric variables indicate a pattern of increased female variability consistent with patrilocal/bilocal residence. The results of multivariate determinant ratio analyses are in agreement with the univariate results, suggesting the possibility of a patrilocal or bilocal residence preference at Pueblo Bonito. These findings are inconsistent with the notion that the female-based system of matrilocal residence with matrilineal descent observed among the present-day Western Pueblos was the ancestral Anasazi condition.

Detecting clinical and balanced selection using spatial autocorrelation analysis under kin-structured migration

Recently spatial autocorrelation has been employed to infer microevolutionary processes from patterns of genetic variation. In theory, different processes should show characteristic signature correlograms; e.g., clinal selection should produce correlograms decreasing from positive to negative autocorrelation, whereas uniform balanced selection should lead to no spatial autocorrelation. The ability of a statistical method such as spatial autocorrelation analysis to distinguish between these selective regimes or even to detect departures from neutrality is dependent on the strength of the evolutionary force and the population structure. Weak selection or migration will not be apparent against the expected background of stochastic noise. Moreover, the population structure may generate sufficient stochastic variation such that even strong evolutionary forces may fail to be detected. This study uses computer simulation to examine the effects of kin-structured migration and three different selective regimes on the shape of spatial correlograms to assess the ability of this technique to detect different microevolutionary processes. Genetic variation among 8 loci is simulated in a linear set of 25 artificial populations. Kin-structured stepping-stone migration among adjacent populations is modeled; directional, balanced, and clinal selection, as well as neutral loci are considered. These experiments show that strong selection produces correlograms of the predicted shape. However, with an anthropologically reasonable population structure, considerable stochastic variation among correlograms for different alleles may still exist. This suggests the need for caution in inferring genetic process from spatial patterns.

Phenotypic consequences of nonrandom migration in the Jirels of Nepal

The phenotypic structure of human populations is shaped by a number of factors such as population size and marital migration. This paper examines the impact of migration on the between-village phenotypic differentiation of the Jirels, a tribal group of eastern Nepal. Data on stature and five cranial measurements for 526 individuals (males and females) are utilized to illustrate the patterns of phenotypic variation. A permutation method is used to generate the phenotypic consequences of random migration constrained to observed levels of movement. The results suggest that Jirel migration is nonrandom and that it produces higher levels of phenotypic differentiation than would result from a random migration process.

A model of kin-migration in plants

Migrants between plant populations may represent a random sample of the donor population or may be related, being identical in the extreme. There is considerable potential for kin-structured migration in many plant species through the co-dispersal of seeds from single individuals. Through simulation experiments we have shown that the greater the level of relatedness of migrants, the less a given level of migration counterbalances the effect of genetic drift among populations.

Statistical analysis of the migration component of genetic drift

Statistical methods are introduced for analysis of the migration component of genetic drift, i.e., of the stochastic changes that affect allele frequencies during migration between local groups. Attention focuses on alpha M, a parameter that measures the extent to which this component of drift departs from the ideal of independent random sampling, and which can be interpreted as a measure of the extent to which migration is kin-structured. It is shown that alpha M can be estimated from genetic data, even in the absence of information about the genealogical relationships of migrants, and Monte-Carlo simulations are used to approximate the sampling distribution of the estimator under the null hypothesis of independent random sampling. Application of these methods to data from the Aland Islands, Finland, shows that the migration pattern there is consistent with the hypothesis of independent random sampling.

Three components of genetic drift in subdivided populations

Wright's metaphor of sampling is extended to consider three components of genetic drift: those occurring before, during, and after migration. To the extent that drift at each stage behaves like an independent random sample, the order of events does not matter. When sampling is not random, the order does matter, and the effect of population size is confounded with that of mobility. The widely cited result that genetic differentiation of local groups depends only on the product of group size and migration rate holds only when nonrandom sampling does not occur prior to migration in the life cycle.
