Abstract
Introduction Sutures play a crucial role in the postoperative healing process, as they help approximate wound edges, promote hemostasis, and support tissue healing. The oral cavity harbors a diverse microbial population, and oral surgical procedures can introduce potential pathogens into the surgical site. Understanding the impact of suture material on wound infection rates and the colonization of potentially harmful microorganisms is vital for improving patient outcomes. This study was aimed to evaluate and compare the microbiological properties of prolene, vicryl plus, monocryl, and silk sutures used after the surgical removal of impacted lower third molars. Materials and methods A total of 40 patients requiring surgical extraction of impacted lower third molars were assigned to four groups: prolene, vicryl plus, monocryl, and silk sutures. Surgical extraction of impacted tooth was done, and wound was sutured with the abovementioned four different materials in four groups, respectively. After seven days, the sutures were removed and sent to the microbiology lab for colony count assessment. Total microbial colony count, streptococcus count, and lactobacillus count were assessed. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 23.0 (Released 2015; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States) with p-values less than 0.05 considered as statistically significant. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Tukey test were done to compare intergroup relations. Results The microbiological evaluation of the sutures revealed significant differences in bacterial colonization among the four groups. More bacterial quantities were found in the silk group followed by the monocryl, vicryl plus, and prolene groups in the descending order. Prolene demonstrated the lowest incidence of bacterial growth (p<0.001) compared to vicryl plus, monocryl, and silk sutures. Bacterial colony count was highest in the silk group. The predominant bacterial species found in all groups were Streptococcus viridans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Lactobacillus. Conclusion It was found that prolene and vicryl plus sutures exhibited superior microbiological properties compared to monocryl and silk sutures when used for the surgical removal of impacted lower third molars. The lower incidence and less quantity of bacterial colonization on prolene sutures suggest their potential for reducing the risk of postoperative infection; hence, these sutures can be preferred for oral surgical procedures.

Abstract
Background: Mandibular third molar (M3M) removal and management of postoperative complications represent a common matter of interest in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This potential quantitative study assessed the ability of two types of surgical sutures, Silk and polytetrafluoroethylene polymer (PTFE), to carry aerobic and anaerobic bacteria on wounds after mandibular third molar surgery, with a collection of the stitches at the suture removal and study in the laboratory on the basis of colony-forming units. Methods: This prospective quantitative study sampled a total of 10 consecutive healthy patients for mandibular third molar surgery at the Oral Surgery School, Dentistry and Dental Prosthodontics, Department of Medical Biotechnologies, University of Siena, Siena, Italy. The mean age of the patients was 31 years (range 25–40 years), seven patients were male and three patients were female. Inclusion criteria were: presence of a partially impacted mandibular third molar. Exclusion criteria were: smoking and diabetes mellitus. Extraction of the mandibular third molar was performed under local anesthesia: after the third molar surgery, two sutures were applied on the surgical site distally to the second mandibular molar: one single 3/0 silk stitch; one single 3/0 PTFE stitch. No sutures were applied on the release incision. Sutures were removed after 7 days and were immediately conserved and sent to the laboratory to be rated on the basis of colony-forming units (CFUs). CFUs were evaluated and reported on GraphPad Prism and transformed into its base 10 logarithm. Data were analyzed with a non-parametric Wilcoxon test, and p-values < 0.05 were evaluated as statistically significant. Results: All the patients attended the suture removal date, and all the sutures were present in the site. None of the surgical sites presented dehiscence. No stitch loss was reported, and no patient reported mouth washing or tooth brushing in the surgery site. All interventions were uneventful and no major complications were reported after M3M surgery. Bacterial retention resulted as statistically greater in silk sutures rather than PTFE sutures, both in Brain Heart Infusion samples (p = 0.003) and Wilkins-Chalgren anaerobe samples (p = 0.002). Conclusions: We found the PTFE suture to be superior to the silk suture in a reduction in the bacterial biofilm in both aerobic and anaerobic evaluations after M3M surgery.

Abstract
Closure of the surgical incision has been the primary function of sutures since their introduction. However, whatever the type, they are known to carry bacteria, which can be a source of infection. Five types of surgical sutures, Gut, Silk, Vicryl, PTFE, and Polyamide, were selected and tested on their ability to carry aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and were rated on the basis of forming colony-forming units (CFUs). Aerobic bacteria grown around gut sutures showed minimum CFUs (≈30 × 104/suture). Though very less anaerobic bacteria growth was seen among all tested suture materials, it was maximum around Vicryl and polyamide sutures. Every suture material is capable, albeit not equally, of holding bacterial biofilm formation, which can be a source of surgical site infection.

Abstract
Objective
Various suture materials and needles are now available for use in the dental surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the preference of suture materials among Turkish dentists by a dental survey.
Materials and Methods
The survey was prepared and sent electronically to Turkish dentists through e-mail and/or Facebook. Dentists were asked to report their graduation year from dental school and their specialty if they have one. In addition, the type periodontal/implant operations and the frequency of those operations applied by them were questioned. The participants were to indicate their suture preferences for these procedures in a multiple-choice questionnaire.
Results
Fifty-seven regular dentists, 49 periodontists, 22 oral surgeons, and 8 other specialists completed a self-administered survey. The majority of clinicians worked in private practice (77.9%). Nonabsorbable sutures were the most preferred for all procedures except periodontal plastic surgery. In regenerative surgeries, monofilament, 5–0 diameter suture material on a reverse cutting, 3/8 circle needle was preferred. In addition, for mucogingival surgery, 5–0 diameter suture material on a reverse cutting and 3/8 circle needle was favored. For dental implants, 4–0 diameter suture material on a reverse cutting and 3/8 circle needle was preferred. Monofilament and braided sutures were selected almost equally for implant operations.
Conclusions
In periodontal and implant surgeries, dentists highly preferred the use of nonabsorbable sutures. In addition, the shape and diameter of needle had an important role in the selection of suture material. The present study's results may serve as a guide for the future studies.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction Antimicrobial sutures are a therapeutic alternative for the control of oral infections. Objective Incorporate Chlorhexidine (CHX) and Cinnamaldehyde (CN) in sutures and evaluate the anti-Candida effect, release of antimicrobials and mechanical properties. Material and method Silk (S) and Polyglactin 910 (P) sutures were aseptically sectioned (20 mm) and immersed for incorporation in 0.12% CHX, 0.4% CN and 0.9% saline solutions under stirring for 60 minutes (n = 10 / group). Suspensions of 500 μL of Candida albicans (ATCC 90028/ 1 × 106 CFU/mL) were used to evaluate fungal adhesion after the 48 h period at 37°C. The release of CLX and CN were evaluated at 0, 24 and 48 hours (n=3/group) by UV-VIS spectrophotometer (275 nm). The tensile strength and displacement (n=5/group) were evaluated after incorporation (30 mm/min, 50N). Data were analyzed by Anova and Tukey (α = 5%). Result No anti-Candida effect was observed on S and P sutures incorporated with CLX and CN (p>0.05). However, progressive release was verified up to 48 after treatment with CLX (S = 0.075 / P = 0.073 μg/mL) and CN (S = 35.33 /P= 5.72 μg/mL). There was a decrease in tensile strength in S (CLX = 9.9 / CN = 9.9 N) and P (CLX = 14.4 / CN = 15.5 N) (p<0.05). No differences were observed for the displacement for S (CLX = 19.3 / CN=20.7 mm) and P (CLX = 16.2 / CN=15.8 mm) (p>0.05). Conclusion The incorporation of CLX and CN did not have a positive effect on the biological and mechanical properties of the sutures evaluated.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the
healing differences in between four different widely used suture
materials in the oral surgery practice, including silk (Perma-
Hand; Ethicon, INC., Somerville, NJ, USA), polypropylene
(Prolene; Ethicon, INC., Somerville, NJ, USA), coated
polyglactin 910 (Ethicon, INC., Somerville, NJ, USA). and
polyglecaprone 25 (Ethicon, INC., Somerville, NJ, USA ). Materials and Methods: 20 male rats were randomly allocated into
two groups depending on their sacrification days (post-operative
1st and the 7th days). Four longitudinal incision wounds, each
1cm in size, were created on the dorsum of each animal which
were then primarily closed with four different types of sutures. Results: The effects of these suture materials on soft tissue healing
were compared histopathologically, by means of density of the cells,
necrosis, fibrosis, foreign body reaction, the presence of cells of
acute and chronic infection. No statistically significant difference
was observed between the groups regarding the density of the
cells, necrosis, fibrosis, foreign body reaction, and the presence
of the cells of acute and chronic infections. Of note, propylene
showed slightly less tissue reaction among the other materials. Conclusion: The results of our study showed that there is no
only one ideal suture material for surgical practice. The factors
related to the patient, the type of the surgery and the quality of
the tissue are important to decide an appropriate suture material.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological impact of an antibacterial suture (Monocryl® Plus) in the surgical removal of I3M. Material and Methods A “split-mouth”, prospective pilot clinical study was designed involving 20 patients programmed for the surgical removal of I3M. Each side was randomly sutured with Monocryl® Plus or silk suture and removed for microbiological study 72 hours and 7 days after surgery. Presence of SSI, wound bleeding and the degree of discomfort associated with each type of suture material (scored by means of a visual analog scale) were evaluated. The level of contamination of each material was observed under the scanning electron microscope. Results Wound bleeding upon suture removing was slightly greater after 72 hours and 7 days with black silk suture, though the differences were not statistically significant (p=0.752 and p=0.113, respectively). Patient discomfort was very similar with both types of suture material (p=0.861). Only one case of SSI was recorded with black silk suture after 72 hours. Microbiologically, the antibacterial suture showed a lesser presence of microorganisms (p<0.001, at 72h and p=0.033 at 7th day, respectively). The most common bacterial species included grampositive cocci (Streptococcus viridans group, Neisseria spp., Coagulasenegative Staphylococcus and Peptostreptococcus), gramnegative cocci (Veillonella), grampositive Bacilli (Lactobacillus), and gramnegative Bacilli (Prevotella). Conclusions The greatest antibacterial effect of Monocryl Plus suture was observed after 72 hours. According to most authors, there is no doubt that this antibacterial suture can provide little safety in the control of SSI. Abstract
In the present study we coated Ti surfaces with polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) and titanium nitride (TiN) and investigated in vitro the behavior of osteoblasts on these surfaces. MG-63 osteoblasts were cultured on titanium discs with different surface treatment: uncoated Ti6Al4V, TiN-coated, PTFE-coated. Cell viability/proliferation was detected by MTT assay. Gene-expression levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteocalcin (OC), type I collagen, receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa-B ligand (RANKL), and osteoprotegerin (OPG) were determined by qPCR. Cell behavior on different surfaces was observed by time-lapse microscopy. Cells grown on PTFE-coated Ti surface exhibited delayed surface attachment and decreased proliferation after 48 h. However, after 168 h of culture cells grown on PTFE-coated surface exhibited higher viability/proliferation, higher expression levels of ALP and OC, and higher OPG/RANKL ratio compared to uncoated surface. No effect of TiN-coating on any investigated parameter was found. Our results shows that PTFE coating exhibits no toxic effect on MG-63 cells and slightly stimulates expression of several genes associated with osteogenesis. We propose that PTFE coating could be considered as a possible choice for a surface treatment of temporary skeletal anchorage devices in orthodontics.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to determine the favoritism of suture materials among a group of clinicians at a teaching institution. METHODS The surveys included 11 absorbable and nine non-absorbable sutures. The surveyor was asked to select his or her suture preferences when it comes to using it in 13 different, commonly-performed surgical procedures. RESULTS The surveys showed overall preferences for non-absorbable versus absorbable sutures. Chromic Gut with a 4-0 diameter thread reverse cutting FS2 needle was the most favored suture. For periodontal bone grafts and hard tissue ridge augmentation, polytetrafluoroethylene with a 4-0 thread and FS2 needle was preferred. For autogenous gingival grafts, gingival allografts, connective tissue grafts, frenectomy and frenoplasty, Chromic Gut with 5-0 diameter thread reverse cutting P3 needle was favored. For extraction socket preservation, soft tissue canine exposure, ridge augmentation, and dental implants, Chromic Gut with 4-0 diameter thread reverse cutting FS2 needle was preferred, and for sinus augmentation, Vicryl with a 4-0 diameter thread reverse cutting FS2 needle was favored. CONCLUSION Absorbable sutures were preferred in the majority of periodontal procedures; however, non-absorbable sutures were favored in procedures that required longer healing or better stability of the flap edges in cases of periodontal and ridge augmentation.
