Restructuring an undergraduate dental curriculum to global standards--a case study in an Indian dental school

Are we practising what we preach and are we all singing from the same hymn sheet? An exploration of teaching in paediatric caries management across UK dental schools

BACKGROUND

The evidence underpinning caries management for children has progressed dramatically over the past 20 years. Anecdotally, this is not reflected in the teaching provided to undergraduate dental students, with the ongoing teaching of outdated methods within some dental schools.

AIM

To capture the current undergraduate teaching provision and clinical treatment experience requirement relative to caries management in paediatric dentistry in UK dental schools.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional analysis of current teaching methods on paediatric caries management was obtained using a piloted online data collection form. Question content included current caries teaching methods, assessment of student exposure and competence. The results were analysed descriptively.

RESULTS

Of the 16 UK dental schools, 14 participated. Discrepancy in teaching content was apparent. Many schools (n = 9) taught biological caries management through therapeutic fissure sealants, yet this was not reflected in assessment and clinical requirements. Some schools (n = 4) taught amalgam placement in children, and most (n = 12) operatively taught treatments that would no longer be routinely provided in general dental practice in the UK, including primary tooth pulpotomy.

CONCLUSION

There is substantial variation in the paediatric caries management techniques that are taught across UK dental schools, demonstrating a need for a national consensus to address these disparities.

A Scoping Review of Internationalization of Dental Education—Identifying Formats and Motivations in Dental Education

Background

Internationalization efforts, including global health activities, in dental education can play an important role in preparing future oral healthcare professionals. To date, in the available literature, there is no common understanding of what internationalization of dental education might mean, and there are no agreed upon standards relating to, or a common definition of the term internationalization of dental education. Here, the authors investigate what has been published in the above area from 01/01/2000 to 12/31/2020, identifying perceived motivations and formats. A proposed definition and connection to the field of international higher education is provided.

Methods

A scoping review of published literature was performed and identified 47 relevant articles. The articles were thematically sorted based on educational formats and concepts (previously established in international higher education) and motivations.

Results

Despite the paucity of articles directly addressing internationalization of dental education, there was a large variety of articles on topics that were identified to correlate with international higher education, ranging from international partnerships, student mobility, and language, to international curriculum at home—with different perceived motivations, including competition, international understanding, and social transformation.

Discussion

More research on internationalization of dental education is needed to provide guidelines and formalize standards for international educational goals to better align formats and motivations for international efforts in dental education.

The Graduating European Dentist-Domain III: Patient-Centred Care

This position paper outlines the areas of competence and learning outcomes of "The Graduating European Dentist" that specifically relate to patient-centred care. This approach is becoming increasingly prominent within the literature and within policy documents. Whilst working to an evidence base is critical, dentists must also be aware of the scientific basis that underpins the treatment they provide. The evaluation process, which supports treatment planning, also requires dentists to be able to listen, collate, and record pertinent information effectively. In addition, the ability to account for a patient's social, cultural and linguistic needs (cultural competence) will result in a practitioner who is able to treatment plan for patient-centred care.

The Graduating European Dentist: A New Undergraduate Curriculum Framework

With "The Graduating European Dentist", ADEE provides a new approach that reflects best academic practice for European undergraduate dental education. The new suite of documents sees increased emphasis on important curriculum components such as patient safety, working as a team and patient-centred care. There is also an increased emphasis on teaching excellence, student satisfaction and student preparedness and support. Guidance relating to methods of teaching and learning, and assessment (educational measurement), is also provided. It is anticipated that this new format will further increase accessibility and utility for educators, institutions, societies and regulators, across the sector.

Are we Training Enough of Communication Skills and Patient Psychology Required in Dental Practice

The aim of this review is to discuss about lacunae in the areas of Communication skills and Patient psychology teaching in the dental set up in India. A literature search was performed using various databases and other resources. Data obtained was reviewed to obtain the work done in this field. It was found that there is currently no clear data in literature as to how much and how well students are taught about communication and behavioural skills and patient personality in dental curriculum in India. Pinpointing such lacunae can help dental colleges and universities to focus on the emphasis of their approaches to teaching about communication skills and psychology of the patient. Identification of future research area in this field is the need of the time for future discovery and progress in this overlooked field.

Exploring frontline faculty perspectives after a curriculum change

CONTEXT

Curriculum renewal is an essential and continual process for undergraduate medical education programmes. Although there is substantial literature on the critical role of leadership in successful curricular change, the voices of frontline faculty teachers implementing such change have not been explored. We aimed not only to examine and understand the perceptions of faculty members as they face curriculum change, but also to explore the influences on their engagement with change.

METHODS

We used a constructivist grounded approach in this exploratory study. Sixteen faculty members teaching in the pre-clinical years were interviewed on their perspectives on a recent curricular change in the undergraduate medical programme at a single Canadian medical school. Constant comparative analysis was conducted to identify recurring themes.

RESULTS

Faculty teachers' engagement with curriculum change was influenced by three critical tensions during three phases of the change: (i) tension between individual and institutional values, which was prominent as change was being introduced; (ii) tension between drivers of change and restrainers of change, which was prominent as change was being enacted, and (iii) tension between perceived gains and perceived losses, which was prominent as teachers reflected on change once implemented.

CONCLUSIONS

We propose a model of faculty engagement with curricular change that elucidates the need to consider individual experiences and motivations within the broader context of the institutional culture of medical schools. Importantly, if individual and institutional values are misaligned, barriers to change outweigh facilitators, or perceived losses prevail; subsequently faculty teachers' engagement may be threatened, exposing the medical education programme to risk.
