Influence of climates and materials on the moisture buffering in office buildings: a comprehensive numerical study in China

In recent years, moisture buffering materials for interior finishing have received much attention for their ability to regulate indoor humidity passively. It is necessary to investigate the potential of such materials' moisture buffering performance before application because the effect is highly climate and material dependent. However, existing studies in China lack a comprehensive overview of the moisture buffering potential of different interior finishing materials throughout the large country with a wide spectrum of climates. This paper aims to outline the moisture buffering potential for office buildings in various climates in China through numerical methods. Specifically, simulations in 15 representative Chinese cities are conducted with five interior finishing materials under two heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) scenarios. The results show that the moisture buffering materials hold a general potential to regulate indoor humidity conditions and reduce buildings' HVAC load. Such benefits are evident in the mild climate but weak in humid areas. The moisture buffering effect also displays significant seasonal variations and could worsen indoor humidity conditions in some cases, indicating the importance of utilizing moisture buffering materials properly. In addition, although moisture buffering materials can reduce the HVAC load, the reduction is limited, within 3 kWh/m2, in most simulated cases. The energy-saving benefits of moisture buffering materials should thus not be over-emphasized. Finally, suggestions are put forward to instruct the choice of interior finishing material according to climate and buildings' HVAC scenarios.

House characteristics and condition as determinants of visible mold and musty odor: Results from three New Zealand House Condition Surveys in 2005, 2010, and 2015

This study assessed associations between house characteristics and mold and musty odor, using data from three consecutive (2005, 2010, and 2015) New Zealand House Condition Surveys, involving a total of 1616 timber-framed houses. Mold, musty odor, and house characteristics were assessed by independent building inspectors. We used multivariate logistic regression analyses mutually adjusted for other house characteristics for each survey separately. Positive and independent associations were found with tenure, ventilation, insulation, and envelope condition for both mold in living and bedrooms and musty odor. In particular, we found significant dose-response associations with envelope condition, ventilation, and insulation. Odds of mold increased 2.4-15.9 times (across surveys) in houses with the worst building envelope condition (BEC; p < 0.05-0.001 for trend); optimal ventilation reduced the risk of mold by 60% and the risk of musty odor by 70%-90% (p < 0.01 for trend). Other factors associated with mold and musty odor included: tenure, with an approximate doubling of odds of mold across surveys; and insulation with consistent dose-response patterns in all outcomes and surveys tested (p < 0.05 for trend in two surveys with mold and one survey for odor). In conclusion, this study showed the importance of BEC, ventilation, and insulation to avoiding harmful damp-related exposures.

Dampness, food habits, and sick building syndrome symptoms in elementary school pupils

OBJECTIVES

We investigated dampness/mold in schools and dwellings, and food habits and subjective symptoms in elementary school pupils, in order to clarify the effect of dampness and food habits on subjective symptoms in elementary school pupils.

METHODS

Questionnaires were used to investigate dampness in classrooms and dwellings in Hokkaido, Japan, and its effect on subjective symptoms in 1,077 pupils in 8 elementary schools. We used a dampness index for both the home and classroom; the index was the sum of the presence of four dampness indicators: (1) visible mold, (2) moldy odor, (3) water leakage, and (4) condensation on windowpanes. The questionnaire also contained queries about food habits, as follows: the frequency of eating breakfast, whether the energy provided by the school lunch was sufficient, and whether eating too many snacks and/or sweets were consumed. Adjusted logistic regression was used to determine whether dampness and food habits were related to the subjective symptoms.

RESULTS

In fully adjusted models, the home dampness index was significantly related to cough, general symptoms, and having at least one symptom; the classroom dampness index was significantly related to nasal symptoms. In addition, usually not eating breakfast was significantly related to eye symptoms, and too many snacks and/or sweets was significantly related to eye, nasal, and general symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

Both home and classroom dampness can affect pupils' health. Home dampness, in particular, was significantly related to cough and general symptoms, and classroom dampness was significantly related to nasal symptoms. Furthermore, favorable food habits have a positive effect on pupils' subjective symptoms.
