Working With Rather Than Against Macaques During Blood Collection

Training macaques to cooperate during blood collection is a practicable and safe alternative to the traditional procedure implying forced restraint. It takes a cumulative total of about 1 hr to train an adult female or adult male rhesus macaque successfully to present a leg voluntarily and accept venipuncture in the homecage. Cooperative animals do not show the significant cortisol response and defensive reactions that typically occur in animals who are forcibly restrained during this common procedure.

Preparing New World monkeys for laboratory research

New World monkeys represent an important but often poorly understood research resource. The relatively small size and low zoonotic risk of these animals make them appealing as research subjects in a number of areas. However, historic portrayal of many of these species as difficult to manage and handle is one of the factors that has limited their use. Basic guidelines are provided on management and handling approaches for the New World monkeys most commonly used in research: marmosets, squirrel monkeys, owl monkeys, and titi monkeys. Topics include transport and acclimation to a new facility, location changes within a facility, diet changes, removal from and return to social groups, capture and restraint, handling for anesthesia, postprocedural monitoring, and staff training.

PET studies of cerebral glucose metabolism in conscious rhesus macaques

A growing body of evidence suggests that rhesus macaques may be a good model of human brain aging. We used positron emission tomography (PET) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) to measure regional cerebral metabolic rates for glucose (rCMRglc) in young and aged rhesus macaques to determine if age-related decreases, such as those reported in humans, also occur in macaques. Whereas the aged animals had lower metabolic rates in every brain region studied, the largest differences were in left temporal cortex. The largest differences were also observed in left temporal cortex when relative rCMRglc values were used. Both rCMRglc and relative rCMRglc were marked by substantial individual variation within the aged group. This variation may parallel the variation observed in behavioral studies. Future studies that include both PET and behavioral measures should help determine if there is a relationship between age-related changes in rCMRglc and behavior.
