Enamel microhardness and bond strengths of self-etching primer adhesives

Evaluation of the remineralizing effect of the chicken eggshell paste after removal of the fixed orthodontic appliance: An in vitro study

BACKGROUND

Demineralization of the enamel surface, which appears as white spot lesions during and after removal of the fixed orthodontic appliance, is the most common disadvantage of the orthodontic treatment course. Using the remineralizing agents during and after orthodontic treatment helps to avoid those enamel defects.

OBJECTIVE

The present study aims to assess the remineralizing effect of the chicken eggshell powder on the demineralized enamel surfaces after debonding the orthodontic bracket system.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The current study was performed on 80 prepared premolar crowns embedded into acrylic molds. The samples were prepared to receive routine steps of the bonding process for the bracket system. The paste of the chicken eggshell powder was added to the samples after the debonding process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) were used to evaluate the remineralization effect of the chicken eggshell powder. Also, the Vickers microhardness tester was used to assess the enamel surface microhardness.

RESULTS

It was found that the mean value of the Ca/P ratio for the samples before bonding of the orthodontic bracket system was (4.17 ± 2.2). This value significantly decreased to (2 ± 1.3) after debonding of the orthodontic bracket system and then showed a significant increase to (4.79 ± 2.65) after remineralization. These results were assured by the values of the Vickers microhardness tester.

CONCLUSION

The chicken eggshell powder has an excellent remineralization effect for the demineralized enamel surface after debonding the orthodontic enamel surface.

Theobromine versus casein phospho-peptides/Amorphous calcium phosphate with fluoride as remineralizing agents: effect on resin-dentine bond strength, microhardness, and morphology of dentine

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to assess the impact of theobromine and casein phospho-peptides/amorphous calcium phosphate with fluoride (CPP-ACPF) on the resin-dentine bond strength, microhardness, and dentine morphology.

METHODS

A total of 18 sound human molars for micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS), 20 sound human premolars for microhardness, and 30 premolars for Scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) were used. Based on the pre-treatment used, teeth were split into six groups; sound dentine, demineralized dentine, and demineralized dentine treated with theobromine (Sigma Aldrich) and MI paste plus (GC International, USA) for two-time intervals; 5 min and 1 month. The bonded teeth were sectioned to produce 1 mm² resin-dentine sticks which were evaluated for µTBS using a universal testing device (Instron 3365, USA). The dentine microhardness was tested by using the Vickers microhardness tester (Nexus 4000 TM, Netherlands). The pre-treated dentine surface was examined using SEM/EDX (Neoscope JCM-6000 plus Joel benchtop SEM, Japan). µTBS results were analysed with two-way ANOVA. Microhardness and EDX results were analysed with two-way mixed model ANOVA. The significance level was set at (p ≤ 0.05).

RESULTS

While both remineralizing materials at the two-time intervals demonstrated µTBS comparable to sound dentine (46.38 ± 12.18), the demineralized group demonstrated statistically the lowest µTBS (p < 0.001). Whether used for 5 min or 1 month, theobromine significantly increased the microhardness (50.18 ± 3.43) and (54.12 ± 2.66) respectively (p < 0.001), whereas MI paste only increased the hardness (51.12 ± 1.45) after 1 month (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The pre-treatment of demineralized dentine with theobromine for 5 min or 1 month could enhance its bond strength and microhardness while for MI paste plus, only 1-month application was efficient to ensure remineralization.

Early hardness and shear bond strength of dual-cure resin cement light cured through resin overlays with different dentin-layer thicknesses

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether dentin-layer thickness of resin overlays could affect the early hardness and shear bond strength of dual-cure resin cement (DCRC, RelyX ARC) after light curing with light curing units (LCUs) of various power densities: Optilux 360 (360), Elipar Freelight 2 (FL2), and Elipar S10 (S10). Resin overlays were fabricated using an indirect composite resin (Sinfony) with a dentin layer, an enamel layer, and a translucent layer of 0.5 mm thickness each (0.5-0.5-0.5) or of 0.2 mm, 0.5 mm, and 0.8 mm thickness (0.2-0.5-0.8), respectively. The DCRC was light cured for 40 seconds through the overlays, and surface hardness and shear bond strength to bovine dentin were tested 10 minutes after the start of light curing. Surface hardness was higher when the DCRC was light cured through the 0.2-0.5-0.8 combination than when the DCRC was light cured through the 0.5-0.5-0.5 combination with all LCUs. The ratio of upper surface hardness of DCRC light cured through resin overlays relative to the upper surface hardness of DCRC light cured directly was more than 90% only when the DCRC was light cured with S10 through the 0.2-0.5-0.8 combination. The shear bond strength value was higher when the DCRC was light cured with S10 through the 0.2-0.5-0.8 combination than when light cured with S10 through the 0.5-0.5-0.5 combination. This study indicates that reducing the dentin-layer thickness while increasing the translucent-layer thickness of resin inlays can increase the photopolymerization of DCRC, thereby increasing the early bond strength of resin inlays to dentin.

A new solvent-free one-step self-etch adhesive: bond strength to tooth structures

INTRODUCTION

In recent years some new solvent-free dental adhesives have been marketed. This study evaluated bonding effectiveness of a new one-step solvent-free self-etch adhesive in comparison with a common two-step self-etch adhesive used as gold standard.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Flat enamel and dentin surfaces were prepared on 60 incisors using silicon carbide papers. Clearfil SE Bond (CSEB) and Bond 1SF (B1SF) adhesives were applied on enamel/dentin surfaces in four groups (n = 15): (1) Enamel surface and CSEB, (2) dentin surface and CSEB, (3) enamel surface and B1SF, (4) dentin surface and B1SF. Composite resin buildups were carried out using Z100 composite resin. All the specimens were stored for 24 hours at 37°C and 100% relative humidity. After 500 rounds of thermocycling, shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed using a universal testing machine at 1 mm/min crosshead speed. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and a post hoc Tukey test (α = 0.05). In each experimental group, two additional specimens were prepared for scanning electron microscopy evaluation.

RESULTS

Significant differences were observed between the study groups (p < 0.001). The highest enamel/dentin bond strengths were recorded in group 1 (CSEB) (p < 0.001). The SBS of the two-step self-etch adhesive to enamel and dentin was significantly higher than that of the one-step self-etch adhesive (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between enamel and dentin SBS with B1SF (p = 0.559).

CONCLUSION

Within the limitations of the present study, when bonded to enamel and dentin the solvent-free adhesive B1SF underperforms as compared to CSEB as the control gold standard.

Effect of Tooth Surface Preparation on the Bonding of Self-Etching Primer Adhesives

The effectiveness of some self-etching primer adhesive systems is not significantly affected by the mode of rotary instrumentation used in dentin preparation.

Hardness and microshear bond strength to enamel and dentin of permanent teeth with hypocalcified amelogenesis imperfecta

BACKGROUND

Adhesive procedures are often required to restore teeth affected by hypocalcified amelogenesis imperfecta (HAI).

AIM

To evaluate the hardness of enamel/dentin of teeth affected by HAI and the bond strength to these substrates, as well the influence of 5% NaOCl on bond strength.

DESIGN

Permanent molars presenting HAI and sound third molars were used. Enamel surfaces were wet-flattened and Knoop hardness was assessed. The two-step, etch-and-rinse adhesive Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE) was applied and resin cylinders bonded to the surfaces and submitted to microshear testing. The subjacent medium dentin was then exposed by wet-grinding. Hardness readings and microshear testing were carried out again. The relationship between hardness and bond strength was assessed by nonlinear regression analysis.

RESULTS

Hardness of normal enamel was higher than hardness of enamel affected by HAI, whereas dentin hardness did not differ from normal to HAI-affected teeth. Enamel and dentin hardness were similar for teeth affected by HAI. Higher bond strengths were obtained to the normal tooth tissues. Dentin bond strength was higher than enamel bond strength. NaOCl exposure did not influence bond strengths. A positive linear relationship between enamel hardness and bond strength was observed.

CONCLUSION

HAI imposes challenges to bonding to enamel and dentin.
