Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present study is to explore the possible association between periodontitis and upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancers, including esophageal and gastric cancers, utilizing the Mendelian randomization method. METHODS In this research, we utilized the Mendelian randomization method to examine the causal association between periodontitis and UGI cancers. Genome-wide association studies data for periodontitis were obtained from the Gene-Lifestyle Interactions in Dental Endpoints consortium, while UGI cancers' data were accessed from FinnGen's Biobank. After rigorously screening instrumental variables for periodontitis, we analyzed them with UGI cancers primarily using the inverse variance weighted. Finally, to identify outliers, the results were subjected to a leave-one-out sensitivity analysis. RESULTS Inverse variance weighted (fixed effect) results revealed that periodontitis is a risk factor for gastric cancer (OR = 1.7735, 95% CI: 1.1576 to 2.7170, P = 0.0085). As for esophageal cancer, no statistically significant correlation was observed. Furthermore, no outliers were detected in any of the results. CONCLUSION Our two-sample Mendelian randomization study obviously demonstrates a significant positive association between periodontitis and gastric cancer, while no statistically significant correlation was found for esophageal cancer.

Abstract
Background Oral microbial infections are one of the most common diseases. Their progress not only results in the irreversible destruction of teeth and other oral tissues but also closely links to oral cancers and systemic diseases. However, traditional treatment against oral infections by antibiotics is not effective enough due to microbial resistance and drug blocking by oral biofilms, along with the passive dilution of the drug on the infection site in the oral environment. Aim of review Besides the traditional antibiotic treatment, carbon dots (CDs) recently became an emerging antimicrobial and microbial imaging agent because of their excellent (bio)physicochemical performance. Their application in treating oral infections has received widespread attention, as witnessed by increasing publication in this field. However, to date, there is no comprehensive review available yet to analyze their effectiveness and mechanism. Herein, as a step toward addressing the present gap, this review aims to discuss the recent advances in CDs against diverse oral pathogens and thus propose novel strategies in the treatment of oral microbial infections. Key scientific concepts of review In this manuscript, the recent progress of CDs against oral pathogens is summarized for the first time. We highlighted the antimicrobial abilities of CDs in terms of oral planktonic bacteria, intracellular bacteria, oral pathogenic biofilms, and fungi. Next, we introduced their microbial imaging and detection capabilities and proposed the prospects of CDs in early diagnosis of oral infection and pathogen microbiological examination. Lastly, we discussed the perspectives on clinical transformation and the current limitations of CDs in the treatment of oral microbial infections.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chronic periodontal disease (CP) is a multifactorial infectious and inflammatory disease that occurs due to the challenge between the immune response of the host and specific periodontal bacteria, and that can lead to tooth loss due to damage inflicted to the supporting tissue. The current study investigates the genotypes of the GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes, along with the allelic frequency of the single nucleotide polymorphism [SNP; rs1695] in the GSTP1 gene and correlates them individually or in various combinations with the incidence of CP. METHODS A total of 203 clinically confirmed CP patients and 201 control subjects were enrolled from Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan Districts in Pakistan from April to July 2022. Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction (T-ARMS-PCR) approaches were applied to determine the genotypes of the studied GSTs. The association of rs1695 in GSTP1 with CP was studied both individually and in various combinations with GSTM1 and T1. RESULTS The absence of GSTM1, the presence of GSTT1 and the presence of the mutant allele (G) at rs1695 in GSTP1 were found to be significantly associated with CP. Patients aged between 10 and 30 years were more affected by CP. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that the genotypes of the analyzed GSTs affect the levels of protection from oxidative stress and may therefore influence the disease progression in CP.

Abstract
The success rate of dental implants is limited by peri-implant infection and insufficient osseointegration. Therefore, reducing the occurrence of peri-implantitis and promoting osseointegration are in demand. A roughened surface has commonly been applied to improve the osseointegration of implants, but it will accelerate the attachment of bacteria. We have developed novel antibiotic-decorated titanium (Ti) surfaces by the immobilization of dopamine and cefotaxime sodium (CS) simultaneously. Moreover, the surface roughness of the polydopamine (PDA)/CS coating was controlled by the changes in polymerization times as determined by atomic force microscopy. Then, all antibiotic-grafted Ti surfaces could effectively prevent the adhesion and proliferation of both Escherichia coli and Streptococcus mutans in comparison to the pristine control. For the culture and osteogenic differentiation of human umbilical mesenchymal stem cells (hUMSCs) on the substrate surface, PDA/CS coating with polymerization times less than 30 min showed acceptable biocompatibility, but the upregulation of marker genes and proteins was detected when the polymerization time was more than 30 min. Moreover, the best calcium deposition results were found in the 30 min PDA/CS group with or without the addition of osteogenic factors. Therefore, our PDA/CS coating with a polymerization time of 30 min holds great potential to design dental implants with dual bacteriostatic and osteogenic properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) is associated with an extensive and rapid destruction of periodontal tissues. Unpredictable treatment outcomes of the disease are consequences of various cross-linked factors. Antimicrobial adjunctive treatment is routinely used as a part of non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) of AgP.
AIM: Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the effects of active periodontal treatment (APT) combined with systemic antibiotics with mechanical debridement alone, in patients with generalized AgP (GAgP).
METHODS: Two groups, consisting of 10 participants each, were randomly formed. Both groups were clinically and microbiologically tested and monitored for 3 months. Test group received APT with antimicrobial supplementation (amoxicillin and metronidazole [AMX-MET]). Patients from the control group were treated by APT only. Clinical and microbiological parameters were recorded at baseline and 3 months following the NSPT. Clinical measurements involved probing depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, and plaque index. Samples of subgingival crevicular fluid were analyzed by qualitative polymerase chain reaction.
RESULTS: Significant improvement of all clinical parameters was observed 3 months following the NSPT (p < 0.05), but significant difference between groups was not found (p > 0.05). Periodontal pathogens’ detection between baseline and 3 months follow-up was also not statistically significant in both examined groups (p > 0.05).
CONCLUSION: Similarity of results obtained in both treatment groups underlined the key role of APT in the treatment of AgP. The AMX-MET supplementation did not improve clinical and microbiological outcomes, when compared to APT alone. Longer follow-up period, with larger sample, could provide a more comprehensive insight into this issue.

Abstract
The 2017 international classification system for periodontal diseases characterises periodontitis patients based upon disease extent, severity and past experience, and in stage IV includes a treatment complexity component. In addition, taking into account well-established risk factors, it aims to estimate the risk for future attachment loss. This classification system draws upon current understanding of disease pathobiology and reflects the complex, multifactorial nature of the periodontitis. It also acknowledges individual patients' risk profiles.Classification and diagnosis are distinct but linked entities, and the inclusion of established risk factors in the system helps signpost the clinician and patient towards a more personalised approach to care provision. The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) has recently developed an S3-level clinical treatment guideline for stages I to III periodontitis, based upon a rigorous standardised process involving 15 systematic reviews of current evidence and their synthesis by a representative group of experts and stakeholders. The aim is to guide the practitioner through the complex plethora of periodontal management options and to facilitate pragmatic decision-making in full knowledge of the evidence base.Here, we present the structured, stepwise treatment protocols developed by the EFP guideline group and highlight selected specific clinical recommendations. The adapted guidelines for the UK healthcare system will be published in early 2021.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Epigenetic events, as the DNA methylation, may be related to development of inflammatory diseases. Due to the important role of host's response in the pathogenesis of periodontitis, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the methylation profile of genes related to immune response in gingival tissues from patients with generalized periodontitis (GP) compared to healthy individuals. METHODS Gingival tissues were collected from 20 individuals with GP and 20 healthy individuals. Genomic DNA was extracted and submitted to enzymatic digestions. An initial screening using a panel of genes involved with the response immune was performed in pools containing six samples of each group. Genes that presented different levels of methylation between the groups were selected for individual assays for validation. RESULTS The array results showed an unmethylated profile in the majority of genes evaluated in both groups. MALT1, LTB, and STAT5 genes presented a profile of partial methylation in the control compared with GP group. Validation individual assays using a larger number of samples (n = 20, each group) confirmed the hypomethylation of STAT5 in the GP group compared with control group (P < .001). CONCLUSION Generalized periodontitis is associated with hypomethylation of the STAT5 gene. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the functional impact these findings.

Abstract
Due to their excellent size, designability, and outstanding targeted antibacterial effects, nanoparticles have become a potential option for controlling oral biofilm-related infections. However, the formation of an oral biofilm is a dynamic process, and factors affecting the performance of antibiofilm treatments are complex. As such, when examining the existing literature on the antibiofilm effects of nanoparticles, attention should be paid to the specific mechanisms of action at different stages of oral biofilm formation, as well as relevant influencing factors, in order to achieve an objective and comprehensive evaluation. This review is intended to detail the antibacterial mechanisms of nanoparticles during the four stages of the formation of oral biofilms: 1) acquired film formation; 2) bacterial adhesion; 3) early biofilm development; and 4) biofilm maturation. In addition, factors influencing the antibiofilm properties of nanoparticles are summarized from the aspects of nanoparticles themselves, biofilm models, and host factors. The limitations of current research and possible trends for future research are also discussed. In summary, nanoparticles are a promising antioral biofilm strategy. It is hoped that this review can serve as a reference and inspire ideas for further research on the application of nanoparticles for effectively targeting and treating oral biofilms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate possible effects of smoking on clinical, biochemical, and microbiological outcomes of non-surgical periodontal treatment in patients with periodontitis Stage III or IV and Grade C. METHODS Conventional quadrant-wise non-surgical periodontal treatment was performed and whole-mouth periodontal measurements were recorded at baseline, 1, 3, and 6 months after completion of treatment. Saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, subgingival plaque, and blood samples were obtained at the same time points. Inflammatory cytokine levels, presence, and quantities of 11 different bacterial species were determined. Smoking status was validated by cotinine assay. RESULTS Fourteen smoker and 13 non-smoker patients completed the study protocol and revealed similar clinical findings except for the higher plaque scores in the non-smokers at 6 months (P <0.01). Significant differences were found between the study groups in biofluid cytokine levels at 1 and 3 months (P <0.01). Gram-negative bacteria were more abundant in the smokers at baseline and so were Gram-positive bacteria in the non-smokers (P <0.01). Gram-negative bacteria repopulated in the smokers faster than in the non-smokers (P <0.01). CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest that smoker patients with periodontitis Stage III and IV, Grade C respond well to the non-surgical periodontal treatment during the 6-month follow-up. However, smokers exhibit faster repopulation of Gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract
AIM To identify phenotypes of periodontitis patients by the use of an unsupervised modelling technique (clustering), based on pre-treatment radiographic and microbiological characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included data from 392 untreated periodontitis patients. Co-regularized spectral clustering algorithm was used to cluster the patients. The resulting clusters were subsequently characterized based on their demographics, radiographic bone loss patterns and microbial data. RESULTS The vast majority of patients fitted into one of the three main clusters (accuracy 90%). Cluster A (n = 18) was characterized by high prevalence and high proportions of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, a trend for a more localized pattern of alveolar bone loss and young individuals. Clusters B (n = 200) and C (n = 135) differed clearly in disease severity patterns and smoking habits, but not in microbiological characteristics. CONCLUSION On the basis of alveolar bone loss patterns and microbiological data, untreated periodontitis patients can be clustered into at least three phenotypes. These results should be validated in other cohorts, and the clinical utility needs to be explored on the basis of periodontal treatment outcomes and/or disease progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to describe the radiographic features of the first molars of patients with localized aggressive periodontitis (LAgP) and of their associated intrabony defects and to compare them with a control sample of chronic periodontitis cases and healthy subjects. METHODS Data from a total of 93 patients were included in this analysis. First, dental panoramic tomograms of 34 patients with LAgP (131 first molars) and 30 periodontally healthy patients (110 first molars) were compared. Then, periapical radiographs of the first molars of the same patients with LAgP and of 29 patients with chronic periodontitis affected by intrabony defects were analysed. RESULTS Shorter root trunks were associated with the presence of intrabony defects in patients with LAgP (P = .002 at multilevel logistic regression), also when LAgP molars were compared with healthy subjects (P = .036). Although no difference in defect depth and angle was noted between LAgP and chronic periodontitis intrabony defects, LAgP intrabony defects appeared to be more frequently symmetrical and arch-shaped than in chronic periodontitis (P = .008), with positive predictive value and negative predictive value of for 'wide arch' defect of 87.3% (95% CI = 77.2%-93.3%) and 32.3% (95% CI = 27.7%-37.2%) respectively. CONCLUSION First molars of patients with LAgP affected by intrabony defects may have some distinct radiographic anatomical characteristics to those of healthy subjects. The shape of intrabony defects seems to differ between LAgP and chronic periodontitis cases. Further studies need to confirm these features and investigate if they are related to the initiation and progression of periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A randomized split-mouth controlled clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in reducing Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) in periodontitis patients. METHODS Twenty patients with periodontitis were recruited for the trial. Following random allocation of either quadrants of the selected jaw to test or control treatment, conventional non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) was performed. In addition, the test side received adjunct photodynamic therapy. Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing (BoP) and plaque scores (PS%) were recorded at phase 0 (baseline), phase 1 (immediately after NSPT), phase 2 (7 days following NSPT), phase 3 (1 month following NSPT) and phase 4 (3 months following NSPT). Subgingival plaque samples for quantification of Aa by real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed at phases 0, 1, 2 and 4. RESULTS There was a significant clinical improvement at phases 3 and 4 compared with baseline while BoP reduced significantly only in the test group at phase 4. However, no difference in the quantification of Aa was detected between the groups. CONCLUSIONS Within the limits of the study, PDT adjunct to scaling and root planing does not lead to quantitative reduction of Aa in periodontitis patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has recently been applied in osseous regeneration. The aim of the present study is to explore the efficacy of PRF in treatment of intrabony defects (IBDs) in aggressive periodontitis. METHODS Fifty-four IBDs in 17 patients were treated either with autologous PRF with open flap debridement (OFD) or OFD alone. Clinical and radiologic parameters such as probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), IBD depth, and percentage defect change were recorded at baseline and 9 months postoperatively. RESULTS Mean PD reduction and mean CAL gain were significantly greater in PRF compared with the control group. Furthermore, a significantly greater percentage of mean bone defect change was found in the PRF group. CONCLUSION Within the limits of the present study, there is greater bone fill at sites treated with PRF with conventional OFD than conventional OFD alone.

Abstract
The functional and aesthetic restoration of teeth compromised due to aggressive periodontitis presents numerous challenges for the clinician. Horizontal bone loss and soft tissue destruction resulting from periodontitis can impede implant placement and the regeneration of an aesthetically pleasing gingival smile line, often requiring bone augmentation and mucogingival surgery, respectively. Conservative approaches to the treatment of aggressive periodontitis (i.e., treatments that use minimally invasive tools and techniques) have been purported to yield positive outcomes. Here, we report on the treatment and five-year follow-up of patient suffering from aggressive periodontitis using a minimally invasive surgical technique and implant system. By using the methods described herein, we were able to achieve the immediate aesthetic and functional restoration of the maxillary incisors in a case that would otherwise require bone augmentation and extensive mucogingival surgery. This technique represents a conservative and efficacious alternative to the aesthetic and functional replacement of teeth compromised due to aggressive periodontitis.

Abstract
An American Academy of Periodontology Task Force has recently published a report on the Update to the 1999 Classification of Periodontal Diseases and Conditions, which is a focused update outlining changes to be included in a comprehensive update planned for 2017. We discuss the proposed changes, and their rationales, and conclude that the periodontal classification carousel will continue to spin until it is realized that the only way forward is a profound reconsideration of what we hope to achieve with classifications.

Abstract
Periodontal Disease includes a wide variety of infectious entities with various clinical manifestations in the oral cavity and responses to treatment. The determinants of clinical manifestations of periodontal disease include the type of infectious agent, the host immune response and environmental factors. Aggressive periodontitis (AP) is defined as a type of inflammation with specific clinical and laboratory features, which distinguish it from other types of periodontitis, with high incidence rates in a sub-group of individuals. Bacteria have been frequently mentioned as the agent inciting gingival inflammation and tissue destruction that underlies the pathogenesis of periodontitis. However, recent studies, with some controversial results, have suggested that the herpes family of viruses, including CMV and EBV-1 as well as papillomaviruses, HIV, Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1, Torquetenovirus and hepatitis B and C occur with high frequency in active periodontal lesions. There is a lack of information about this disease and the role of herpesviruses in its pathophysiology. This review provides a critical analysis of the scientific evidence linking bacteria and viruses with AP and their potential impact on clinical characteristics, prognosis and therapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Plasma cell gingivitis (PCG) is an unusual inflammatory condition characterized by dense, band-like polyclonal plasmacytic infiltration of the lamina propria. Clinically, it appears as gingival enlargement with erythema and swelling of the attached and free gingiva and is not associated with any loss of attachment. The aim of this report is to present a rare case of severe generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) associated with a PCG lesion that was successfully treated and maintained non-surgically. CASE PRESENTATION A 32-year-old white male with a non-contributory medical history presented with gingival enlargement with diffuse erythema and edematous swelling, predominantly around teeth #5 through #8. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed generalized severe periodontal breakdown. A complete blood count and biochemical tests were within normal limits. Histologic and immunohistochemical examination were consistent with PCG. A diagnosis of severe GAgP associated with a PCG lesion was assigned. Treatment included elimination of possible allergens and non-surgical periodontal treatment in combination with azithromycin. Clinical examination at reevaluation revealed complete resolution of gingival enlargement, erythema, and edema and localized residual probing depths of 5 mm. One year after treatment, the clinical condition was stable. Radiographs indicated improved bone levels and formation of crestal lamina dura. CONCLUSION This case report highlights the unusual coexistence of GAgP and PCG, in which non-surgical treatment with elimination of all possible causes in combination with antimicrobials resulted in elimination of the gingival enlargement and significant improvement of periodontal parameters.

Abstract
Periodontitis is an infectious disease that affects the tooth-supporting tissues and exhibits a wide range of clinical, microbiological and immunological manifestations. The disease is associated with and is probably caused by a multifaceted dynamic interaction of specific infectious agents, host immune responses, harmful environmental exposure and genetic susceptibility factors. This volume of Periodontology 2000 covers key subdisciplines of periodontology, ranging from etiopathogeny to therapy, with emphasis on diagnosis, classification, epidemiology, risk factors, microbiology, immunology, systemic complications, anti-infective therapy, reparative treatment, self-care and affordability issues. Learned and unlearned concepts of periodontitis over the past 50 years have shaped our current understanding of the etiology of the disease and of clinical practice.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a complex infectious disease that affects low-income individuals disproportionately. Periodontitis is associated with specific bacterial species and herpesviruses, and successful prevention and treatment of the disease is contingent upon effective control of these pathogens. This article presents an efficacious, highly safe, minimally invasive, practical and low-cost periodontal therapy that involves professional and patient-administered mechanical therapy and antimicrobial agents. The major components are scaling for calculus removal, periodontal pocket irrigation with potent antiseptics, and treatment with systemic antibiotics for advanced disease. Povidone-iodine and sodium hypochlorite have all the characteristics for becoming the first-choice antiseptics in the management of periodontal diseases. Both agents show excellent antibacterial and antiviral properties, are readily available throughout the world, have been safely used in periodontal therapy for decades, offer significant benefits for individuals with very limited financial resources, and are well accepted by most dental professionals and patients. Four per cent chlorhexidine applied with a toothbrush to the most posterior part to the tongue dorsum can markedly reduce or eliminate halitosis in most individuals. Systemic antibiotics are used to treat periodontopathic bacteria that are not readily reached by topical therapy, such as pathogens within gingival tissue, within furcation defects, at the base of periodontal pockets, and on the tongue, tonsils and buccal mucosae. Valuable antibiotic therapies are amoxicillin-metronidazole (250 mg of amoxicillin and 250 mg of metronidazole, three times daily for 8 days) for young and middle-aged patients, and ciprofloxacin-metronidazole (500 mg of each, twice daily for 8 days) for elderly patients and for patients in developing countries who frequently harbor enteric rods subgingivally. Scaling to remove dental calculus and the prudent use of inexpensive antimicrobial agents can significantly retard or arrest progressive periodontitis in the great majority of patients.

Abstract
This minireview aims to verify the supposition that the microbial sampling process can change results of microbiological analysis in periodontitis diagnosis. The literature search via Pubmed yielded 52 appropriate articles for analysis. Of which 38% (20/52) described that the sampling sites were isolated from saliva, whereas 62% (32/52) did not. Also, 29% (15/52) declared that the microbial sampling was performed before probing pocket depth (PPD), whereas 71% (37/52) did not. Comparison of the results of microbiological analysis in these studies showed that the bacteria most frequently detected in periodontal pockets was variable. Therefore, a sampling process that includes both the microbial sample being taken before PPD and saliva isolation of the sampling sites is needed to ensure the accuracy of microbiological analysis in periodontitis diagnosis.

Abstract
The aim of this trial was to investigate changes occurring in the subgingival microbiological composition of subjects with aggressive periodontitis, treated with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), in a single episode, or scaling and root planing (SRP), in a split-mouth design on -7, 0, and +90 days. Ten patients were randomly assigned to either aPDT using a laser source in conjunction with a photosensitizer or SRP with hand instruments. Subgingival plaque samples were collected and the counts of 40 subgingival species were determined using checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization. The data were analyzed using the method of generalized estimating equations (GEE) to test the associations between treatments, evaluated parameters, and experimental times (α = .05). The results indicated that aPDT and SRP affects different bacterial species, with aPDT being effective in reducing numbers of A. actinomycetemcomitans than SRP. On the other hand, SRP was more efficient than aPDT in reducing the presence of periodontal pathogens of the Red Complex. Additionally, a recolonization in the sites treated by aPDT was observed, especially for T. forsythia and P. gingivalis. Under our experimental conditions, this trial demonstrates that aPDT and SRP affected different groups of bacteria, suggesting that their association may be beneficial for the non-surgical treatment of aggressive periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The potential of salivary microorganisms to diagnose periodontal disease and to guide periodontal treatment is a research topic of current interest. This study aimed to determine whether the salivary counts of periodontopathic microbes correlated with the periodontal pocket counts of the same infectious agents, and whether the salivary counts of the test infectious agents could distinguish among individuals with periodontal health and various types of periodontal disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 150 systemically healthy adults, of whom 37 were periodontally healthy, 31 had gingivitis, 46 had chronic periodontitis and 36 had aggressive periodontitis. Each study subject contributed microbial samples from the two deepest periodontal pockets of the dentition and from whole saliva. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Campylobacter rectus, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythia and Epstein-Barr virus were identified using the TaqMan real-time PCR methodology. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U-test and the receiver operating characteristic statistics. RESULTS C. rectus, F. nucleatum, P. gingivalis, P. intermedia and T. forsythia occurred with significantly higher copy-counts in salivary samples from patients with gingivitis, chronic periodontitis and aggressive periodontitis than from periodontally healthy individuals. A. actinomycetemcomitans only showed higher salivary copy-counts in subjects with aggressive periodontitis compared with subjects with healthy periodontium, and the salivary copy-counts of Epstein-Barr virus did not reveal any significant difference among the four subject groups studied. The diagnostic sensitivity for periodontitis was 89.19 for P. gingivalis and for T. forsythia and 86.49 for P. intermedia, with specificities ranging from 83.78 to 94.59. The optimal copy-counts per mL saliva for identifying periodontitis were 40,000 for P. gingivalis, 700,000 for T. forsythia and 910,000 for P. intermedia. CONCLUSION Salivary copy-counts of P. gingivalis, T. forsythia and P. intermedia appear to have the potential to identify the presence of periodontitis, whereas the salivary level of the other test infectious agents may possess little or no diagnostic utility. Longitudinal studies are warranted to determine the ability of salivary copy-counts of major periodontopathic bacteria to predict future periodontal breakdown.
