Urinary bladder mural hemorrhage associated with systemic bleeding disorders in three dogs

Concentric bladder wall thickening due to haemorrhage following suprapubic aspiration: ultrasound and CT features

A 5-week-old baby with coagulopathy due to hepatic mitochondrial disorder developed a bladder haematoma secondary to suprapubic urine aspiration. Unlike previously reported cases, the haematoma manifested itself only as concentric thickening of the bladder wall without an intraluminal component. The ultrasound and CT features are described. Recognition of these findings is important when discussing the differential diagnosis of bladder wall thickening.

Diagnostic approach to hematuria in dogs and cats

Hematuria indicates the presence of urogenital disease in dogs and cats. Persistent hematuria (macroscopic or microscopic) should be evaluated to determine the source of bleeding and the underlying cause so that appropriate treatment can be recommended. Results of the history and physical examination often help to localize disease to the urinary tract (either upper or lower) or genital tract. Additional diagnostic evaluation, including laboratory testing(eg, urinalysis, urine culture), diagnostic imaging (eg, abdominal radiographs, ultrasound), and collection of tissues for cytologic or histopathologic evaluation, may be needed to identify the underlying cause. If a thorough evaluation fails to reveal the source or cause of hematuria, exploratory celiotomy should be considered,especially if idiopathic renal hematuria is possible.

Dysuria resulting from an encapsulated haematoma in a recently spayed bitch

A 15-month-old bitch was presented for investigation of a two-month history of dysuria. Clinical signs had developed within one day of routine ovariohysterectomy. A rounded mass was palpable in the caudal abdomen which was shown radiographically to displace and compress the urinary bladder. On ultrasonography, the mass was composed primarily of pockets of hypoechoic fluid divided by hyperechoic septae; blood was obtained on fine-needle aspiration. The mass was surgically removed and the dog regained normal urinary function within a few days. Histopathological examination showed the mass to be an encapsulated haematoma, which is likely to have developed as a result of the ovariohysterectomy.
