Predictors of contraceptive methods among adolescents and young women residing in Spain

A Trend Analysis of Condom use in Spanish Young People over the Two Past Decades, 1999-2020

HIV exposure is one of the greatest sexual risks in young people, and condom use is the best protective measure. Despite the preventive efforts, trend in condom use is still unclear. This study examines the trend of condom use by gender in Spanish young people, in different sexual practices (vaginal, oral and anal), relationships (regular and casual) and having sex after drugs consumption during the two past decades (from 1999 to 2020). For this, 14,472 people who ranged from 17 to 40 years old (63.5% women) filled the AIDS Prevention Questionnaire in each year. In general, low condom use remains stable and even gets worse regardless of the type of sexual practice, relationship and the substance consumption. Regarding gender, this trend is worse in women who have been less likely to report condom use than men have. Moreover, older people have reported a minor frequency of condom use than the youngest people have done, except for anal sex. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze why, despite preventive efforts, condom use seems to decrease over time.

Investigating College Women's Contraceptive Choices and Sexuality

Objective This study examined the link between sexuality and contraceptive choices among college women after controlling for their relationship status. Additionally, the relationship between responsibility for contraception and women's contraceptive choices was investigated. Method: Online self-report surveys of sexuality and contraception were collected from 455 college women in the United States. Results: Women mostly preferred dual-method contraception. Sexual esteem and sexual depression predicted women's contraceptive choices. Finally, having personal or shared responsibility for contraception predicted women's contraceptive choices. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that women's psychological well-being empowers them to make contraceptive choices that allow them to experience sexuality in healthy ways.

Contraceptive method use among women and its association with age, relationship status and duration: findings from the third British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3)

BACKGROUND

One in six pregnancies in Britain are unplanned. An understanding of influences on contraceptive method choice is essential to provision compatible with users' lifestyles. This study describes contraceptive method use by age, and relationship status and duration, among women in Britain.

METHODS

Data from women participating in the third British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles were used to describe contraceptive use grouped as: unreliable method or none; barrier methods; oral/injectable hormonal methods; and long-acting reversible contraception. A total of 4456 women at risk of pregnancy were used to examine associations between contraception use, age, relationship type and duration. Age-stratified odds ratios for contraceptive use by relationship type and duration were estimated using binary logistic regression.

RESULTS

Some 26.0% of 16-49-year-olds used hormonal contraception as their usual method. Use of hormonal and barrier methods was highest in the youngest age group and decreased with age; the reverse was true for use of unreliable methods or none. Barrier method use was higher in short-term relationships among younger participants; this was not seen among older respondents. Duration was more strongly associated with usual contraceptive method than relationship type; this pattern was more marked among younger participants.

CONCLUSIONS

Asking about relationship status and duration may help providers support women's contraceptive use by considering their priorities and preferences at different life stages. Interactions between relationship characteristics, age and contraception are complex, and bear closer scrutiny both in research and in policy and practice.

Effect of Parent-Daughter Communication about Sex on the Use of Less Effective Contraception among Women from Ages 15-24 Years in France

STUDY OBJECTIVE

Most women begin sexual activity as teenagers but nearly 20% of women in France younger than 25 years rely on less effective contraceptive methods (condoms or methods such as withdrawal or periodic abstinence). We sought to analyze the association with less effective contraception among women aged 15-24 years in France and communication about sex and contraception with their parents. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, INTERVENTIONS, AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The analyses focused on 713 sexually active women who did not currently want a child, were using contraception, and were interviewed in 2010 in a national cross-sectional probability survey (FEcondité CONtraception Dysfonctions sexuelles [FECOND]) when they were 15-24 years old. Associations between the use of less effective contraception, social and demographic characteristics, sexual activity, health characteristics, and communication with parents and friends about sexuality and contraception were tested with logistic regression models according to age group.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

Less effective contraception (condoms, and barrier or natural methods) is used more often by younger women: 27.5% of 15- to 19-year-old women and 14.7% of 20- to 24-year-old women (P < .001). After adjustment for demographic characteristics and aspects of their sex lives (regularity and frequency of intercourse), women who reported difficulty discussing contraception and sex with their mothers at age 15 years were more likely than those with easier communication to use less effective contraception (for those 15-19 years, odds ratio = 1.97; 95% confidence interval, 0.94-4.10, and for those 20-24 years, odds ratio = 2.36; 95% confidence interval, 1.31-4.26). Difficulty in communicating with their parents, especially their mothers, about sex, is associated with young women's choice of less effective contraception.

Trends in the use of oral contraceptives among adolescents and young women in Spain

Background

We aimed to determine the prevalence of consumption of oral contraceptives (OCs) among adolescents and young women living in Spain and to identify the factors associated with this consumption.

Methods

We performed a cross-sectional study on the consumption of OCs by women aged 15–30 years residing in Spain. We used secondary individualized data from the 2006 (n = 2513) and 2012 (n = 1530) Spanish National Health Surveys. The dependent variable was the use of OCs in the previous 2 weeks. Independent variables included sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidity, lifestyle, and healthcare resource utilization.

The prevalence of OC consumption was analysed by investigating the changes observed between 2006 and 2012. We used multivariate logistic regression to identify the independent factors associated with OC use in each year.

Results

In 2006, 14.42 % of women reported using OCs; this percentage dropped to 10.21 % in 2012 (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed an association between OC use and visits to the gynaecologist (AOR, 5.60 [95 % CI, 2.93–10.73] in 2006; and AOR, 3.55 [95 % CI, 1.30–9.73] in 2012), Pap smear tests (AOR, 1.8 [95 % CI, 1.23–2.87] in 2006; and AOR, 2.42 [95 % CI, 1.30–4.51] in 2012), and smoking in 2006 (AOR, 1.42 [95 % CI, 1.04–1.93]).

Conclusions

There was a significant decrease in OC use from 2006 to 2012 among adolescents and young women living in Spain. In the present study, consumers of OCs were women who visited a gynaecologist more often and complied more with preventive measures such as Pap smear testing. Also, women who reported having used OCs were more likely to smoke than the rest of the study population, although the smoking habit is a risk factor for thrombotic events in women who take OCs.

Safer sex and condom use: findings from the Second Australian Study of Health and Relationships

Background It is important to have current and reliable estimates of the frequency and correlates of condom use among Australian adults. Methods: A representative sample of 20 094 men and women aged 16–69 years, from all states and territories, completed computer-assisted telephone interviews. The overall participation rate among eligible people was 66.2%. Results: Although most respondents had used a condom at some time in their lives, fewer than half of those who were sexually active in the year before being interviewed had used a condom in that year. Condom use in the last year was associated with youth, speaking a language other than English at home, bisexual identity, greater education, residence in major cities, lower income and having multiple sexual partners in the last year. One-quarter of respondents used a condom the last time they had vaginal intercourse and one-sixth of these were put on after genital contact. Condom use during most recent vaginal sex was associated with youth, lower income, having sex with a non-regular partner and not using another form of contraception. Condom use appears to have increased between 2001–02 and 2012–13. Conclusion: Consistent with other research, this study showed that condom use was strongly associated with partner type and use of other contraception. There may be a need to highlight among people with multiple sexual partners the fact that non-barrier methods of contraception do not offer protection against sexually transmissible infections. The finding that many condoms were applied after genital contact suggests a need to promote both use and correct use of condoms.

Factors related to contraceptive methods among female higher education students in Greece

STUDY OBJECTIVE

We aimed to determine the prevalence of contraceptive methods and identify factors associated with the use of contraception by Greek female higher education students.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional epidemiologic survey on the factors determining the use of contraception among higher educational students.

SUBJECT

3,624 female students between 18 and 26 years of age.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

We used primary individualized data drawn from a survey carried among female college students in Greece. The dependent dichotomous variables were the responses "YES" or "NO" to the question: "During the last 12 months, what contraceptive method have you generally used in your sexual intercourses?" The methods were male condoms, oral contraceptive use (OCs) and emergency contraception (EC). The independent variables which were analysed in this survey were socio-demographic characteristics, variables related to lifestyle and variables associated with sexual habits.

RESULTS

Condom was the most widely used (53.87%). The variables associated independently and significantly with a greater likelihood of the use of condoms were condom use at first sexual intercourse, occupational status and higher educational level of parents. As for OCs, those who had relationship, had more than 2 sexual lifetime partners and had ever visited gynecologist (OR 6.40; 95%CI 2.80-9.40) was more likely to use. For the use of EC, those who were older, had relationship, were smokers and had more than 2 sexual lifetime partners (OR 2.15; 95%CI 1.75-2.64), was more likely to use this method.

CONCLUSIONS

Condom is the most used contraceptive method among female higher educational students in Greece, followed by EC. The variable most strongly associated with use of the OCs was a gynecologist visit. The factors associated with use of EC were having more than 2 sexual partners, smoking, and having a stable sexual partner.
