Relations among social support, burnout, and experiences of anger: an investigation among emergency nurses

A Moderated Mediation Model of the Influence of Cynical Distrust, Medical Mistrust, and Anger on Vaccination Hesitancy in Nursing Staff

During the pandemic, nurses experienced anger that stemmed from a sense of threat, frustration, or even a sense of injustice. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between vaccination hesitancy, anger, cynicism, and medical mistrust among nurses, as there are no relevant studies in the literature. This study was conducted online by completing self-report questionnaires. The Dimensions of Anger Reactions-5, the 8-item "Cynical Distrust" scale, and the Medical Mistrust Multiformat Scale were used. For vaccination hesitancy, two questions with a 5-point scale were used: one question examining hesitancy to get vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine, and another question examining hesitancy to get vaccinated with the influenza vaccine. In total, 387 nurses (66 men and 321 women) participated in this study. Nurses showed statistically greater hesitancy toward the COVID-19 vaccine compared to hesitancy toward the influenza vaccine. The variation in vaccine hesitancy was explained by the scores in the Medical Mistrust Multiformat Scale, the Dimensions of Anger Reactions, and the Cynical Distrust Scale. The Medical Mistrust Multiformat Scale mediated the relationship between the Cynical Distrust Scale and total vaccine hesitancy. The Dimensions of Anger Reactions Scale significantly moderated the indirect effect of the Cynical Distrust Scale on total vaccine hesitancy through the Medical Mistrust Multiformat Scale. In conclusion, it is highly likely that anger is involved in reported vaccine hesitancy both by activating schemas of distrust in others and by adopting anti-systemic views of mistrust in the medical system.

The scale of Work-Related Affective Feelings (WORAF)

Interest in the field of emotions in the workplace continues to grow. However, a narrow range of measurements exists for the examination of affective states in organizational settings, all of which were developed based on the discrete-emotions approach. The main objective of the current study was to develop and validate a new instrument to assess four work-related (WR) affective feelings (WORAF): WR feelings of happiness, WR feelings of anxiety, WR feelings of anger, and WR feelings of dejection. Three independent samples of Polish employees in different occupations were included in the study (n = 297, n = 3019, n = 284). The results provide significant evidence for the validity of the proposed WORAF scale, although further investigations are needed.

Emotional Intelligence Buffers the Effects of Negative Emotions on Job Burnout in Nursing

The study was designed to examine whether trait emotional intelligence would moderate the impact of negative emotions at work on job burnout. A total of 188 female nurses participated in this study and completed measures of trait affectivity, emotional intelligence, anger and sadness at work, and burnout. The results revealed significant and positive relationships between both types of negative emotions and burnout above and beyond demographics and the nurses' trait affectivity. Importantly, the study demonstrated that trait emotional intelligence buffers the effects of negative emotions on burnout. Specifically, anger- and sadness-related emotions predicted greater burnout among nurses with low trait emotional intelligence but not among nurses with high trait emotional intelligence. These results suggest that emotional intelligence training could be implemented to prevent the adverse effect of negative emotions felt at work on job burnout.

Consequences of parental burnout: Its specific effect on child neglect and violence

Parental burnout is a specific syndrome resulting from enduring exposure to chronic parenting stress. It encompasses three dimensions: an overwhelming exhaustion related to one's parental role, an emotional distancing from one's children and a sense of ineffectiveness in one's parental role. This study aims to facilitate further identification of the consequences of parental burnout for the parents themselves, their spouses and their child(ren). In a sample of 1551 parents, we examined the relationship between parental burnout and seven possible consequences: escapism and suicidal thoughts, addictions, sleep disorders, marital conflicts, a partner estrangement mindset, and neglect and violence towards one's child(ren). We examined (1) to what extent parental and job burnout related to each of these possible consequences and (2) whether parental burnout is specifically related to neglectful and violent behaviour towards one's child(ren). The results suggest that parental burnout has a statistically similar effect to job burnout on addictions and sleep problems, a stronger effect on couples' conflicts and partner estrangement mindset and a specific effect on child-related outcomes (neglect and violence) and escape and suicidal ideation. These results emphasize the importance of accurately diagnosing this syndrome.

Ethical sensitivity, burnout, and job satisfaction in emergency nurses

BACKGROUND

Rising levels of burnout and decreasing job satisfaction can inhibit healthcare professionals from providing high-quality care due to a corresponding decrease in their ethical sensitivity.

AIM

This study aimed to determine the relationship between the level of ethical sensitivity in emergency service nurses and their levels of burnout and job satisfaction.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This research employed a descriptive and cross-sectional design.

PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT

This study was conducted with a sample of 236 nurses, all of whom worked in emergency service between 24 July 2015 and 28 April 2016. Data were collected using the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

This study was approved by the Institutional Ethics Review Board of Ondokuz Mayıs University.

FINDINGS

There was a weak and negative correlation (r = -0.158, p = 0.015) between Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire and Maslach Burnout Inventory scores. There was also a weak and negative correlation (r = -0.335, p < 0.001) between the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale scores.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

Decreased job satisfaction and increased burnout levels among emergency service nurses might result in them indulging in improper practices, frequently facing ethical problems, and a decrease in the overall quality of service in hospitals. In order for emergency service nurses to recognize ethical problems and make the most accurate decisions, a high level of ethical sensitivity is critical. In this respect, it is suggested that continuing education after graduation and training programs should be organized.

Anxiety levels and related symptoms in emergency nursing personnel in Greece

INTRODUCTION

Several studies provide evidence for the association between work stress and mild psychiatric morbidity among emergency nurses. These symptoms have not been explored in Greek nursing personnel employed in emergency departments. The aim of this descriptive correlational study was to investigate the presence of anxiety and stress symptoms among emergency nursing personnel in Greece.

METHODS

The sample was composed of nursing personnel employed in emergency departments of 8 adult General hospitals in Greece (N = 213). The Hamilton Anxiety Scale was applied for the quantitative assessment of anxiety symptoms, along with demographic, vocational, and educational data. Descriptive statistics were explored, and nonparametric comparisons, as well as correlational tests, were performed.

RESULTS

Anxiety levels were found to be mild (1.102 ± 0.53), with women (P = .021, Mann-Whitney U test) and nursing personnel employed in public sector hospitals (P = .029, Mann-Whitney U test) having higher anxiety level scores. In addition, a statistically significant mild correlation was observed between work experience in the emergency department and anxiety states (τ = 0.178, P = .011). The most commonly reported manifestations of mild psychiatric symptomatology were sleep disturbances (2.32 ± 1.2), anxious mood (1.57 ± 1.1), and depressed mood (2.38 ± 1.2), with 24.8% of the participants reporting very severe sleep disturbance, 23.9% reporting very severe depressive mood, and 10.7% reporting very severe anxious mood.

DISCUSSION

Hospital administrators need to be aware of the extent of workplace stress and subsequent anxiety symptoms that exist in emergency nurses. Staff counseling, continuing professional education, and empowerment strategies may need to be implemented to prevent psychiatric morbidity, as well as job dissatisfaction and resignations.
