Abstract
An 11-year-old, intact female Pomeranian dog was presented for evaluation due to an 18-h history of anorexia and lethargy. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a 3×3 cm mass of mixed echogenicity at the level of the left ovary. At laparotomy, a 5 mm mass was identified at the cranial region of the right uterine horn and a 3 cm round mass was visualized near the cranial aspect of the left uterine horn. Ovariohysterectomy was performed. A diagnosis of grade 1 oviductal and uterine leiomyosarcoma was made via histopathology for both masses. Oviductal leiomyosarcomas are rare and generally locally invasive similar to other soft tissue sarcomas but do not often metastasize. Uterine leiomyosarcomas are also uncommon but are one of the more common tumors affecting the female reproductive tract. This is the only known case report of oviductal leiomyosarcoma in the dog and the only report of uterine leiomyosarcoma in addition to oviductal leiomyosarcoma as well. This case illustrates the oviduct as an additional site that can be affected by leiomyosarcoma and demonstrates surgery as a treatment option for patients diagnosed with this condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of female genital system infiltration of T-cell lymphoma in veterinary literature. CASE PRESENTATION A 1.5-year-old, intact female Golden Retriever was referred due to melena and hyporexia that lasted for three weeks. Fever (40.5℃), tachycardia, tachypnoea, pale mucous membranes, and purulent vaginal discharge were identified on physical examination. Blood analyses revealed leucocytosis, anaemia, hypoalbuminemia, and increased lactate and C-reactive protein levels. On abdominal radiography, the small intestine was moderately deviated because of an oval-shaped mass (13 cm × 8.7 cm) located in the mid-abdomen. An enlarged tubular-shaped structure that had the opacity of soft tissue located in dorsal to the bladder to the middle of the abdomen, and an oval-shaped mass (5.28 cm × 3.26 cm), which was suspected to be a medial iliac lymph node located at the sixth to seventh lumbar level. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed gas and fluid in the lumen of the uterine horn with a severely thickened wall, round enlarged lymph nodes around the genitourinary system, and free fluid in the abdominal cavity. Based on these results, pyometra was suspected, and an exploratory laparotomy was performed for ovariohysterectomy. The resected ovary and uterus were macroscopically hypertrophied. Histopathological examination of the ovary and uterus revealed neoplastic proliferation of large round cells with strong immunoreactivity for CD3, indicating T-cell lymphoma. Therefore, the young dog was diagnosed with genital lymphoma. CONCLUSIONS The present report describes T-cell lymphoma infiltrating the uterus and ovaries in a young dog, which is rarely diagnosed and could aid in the differential diagnosis of genital diseases in young dogs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate typical computed tomography (CT) features for the differentiation of vaginal from the uterine origin in dogs. ANIMALS 7 healthy Beagles in the prospective study and 5 bitches in the retrospective study. PROCEDURES In the prospective study, dual-phase CT images were obtained from sexually intact female Beagles (n = 7) during anestrus and estrus. On the CT images, the vagina and uterine horns, body, and cervix were assessed for diameter, attenuation, and contrast enhancement pattern. In the retrospective study, CT features of large vaginal lesions (leiomyoma, leiomyosarcoma, adenocarcinoma, hematocolpos, and Gartner's duct cyst) were assessed in 5 bitches. RESULTS In normal bitches, the cervix was thicker with strong central enhancement compared to the uterus and vagina. The uterine artery, which enters the mesometrium at the level of the cervix, was clearly visualized and assisted in identifying the cervix. In bitches with large vaginal masses, uterine arteries were displaced by the lesions and could not be used to locate the cervix. In 4/5 dogs with vaginal masses, identification of the cervix allowed the determination of the organ of origin. In 1 dog with adenocarcinoma, CT vaginography was additionally required for determining the origin of mass. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results from this study indicate that the cervix, recognized in CT as focal thickening of the uterus with central enhancement, may be used as a landmark for the differentiation between the uterus and vagina in bitches.

Abstract
Recent advances in non-invasive imaging methods have revitalised the field of comparative anatomy, and reproductive anatomy has been no exception. The reproductive systems of female amniotes present specific challenges, namely their often internal "hidden" anatomy. Quantifying female reproductive systems is crucial to recognising reproductive pathologies, monitoring menstrual cycles, and understanding copulatory mechanics. Here we conduct a review of the application of non-invasive imaging techniques to female amniote reproductive anatomy. We introduce the commonly used imaging modalities of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), highlighting their advantages and limitations when applied to female reproductive tissues, and make suggestions for future advances. We also include a case study of micro CT and MRI, along with their associated staining protocols, applied to cadavers of female adult stoats (Mustela erminea). In doing so, we will progress the discussion surrounding the imaging of female reproductive anatomy, whilst also impacting the fields of sexual selection research and comparative anatomy more broadly.

Abstract
Simple Summary Total or partial vulvo-vaginectomy or vaginectomy are not routinely surgery due to the complexity of the techniques and because they are considered radical treatments. Furthermore, in literature, there is a paucity of information regarding these techniques and the extent of the reproductive tract resection is not always clearly defined, as the same technique is often named in a different way by different authors, confusing the reader. The aim of this article is to review and describe five surgical procedures on the basis of the correct identification of the anatomical areas: partial vaginectomy, complete vaginectomy, partial vestibule-vaginectomy, vulvo-vestibule-vaginectomy and vulvo-vestibulectomy. For each technique, indications and possible intraoperative and perioperative complications are mentioned. Moreover, authors’ clinical experience in 33 dogs presenting genitourinary lesions not amenable to local resection via simple episiotomy and outcomes are described. Therefore, the aim of this essay is to describe five different surgical techniques: partial vaginectomy, complete vaginectomy, partial vestibule-vaginectomy, vulvo-vestibule-vaginectomy and vulvo-vestibulectomy. All techniques are described on the basis of the correct identification of the anatomical nomenclature related to structures involved in surgery, in order to give a more precise and unambiguous description and execution of surgical techniques. Moreover, possible intraoperative and perioperative complications and the authors’ clinical experience in 33 dogs are described. All techniques are well tolerated and could be curative in case of benign or malignant tumours that have not yet metastasized and palliative in other cases. Moreover, they are also useful for therapeutic purposes for chronic vaginitis, severe vaginal cysts or congenital abnormalities. It is our opinion that having five different available techniques to approach vaginal disease is useful to perform the best surgery according to the clinical findings, patient’s characteristics, technique invasiveness and whether it is palliative or not.

Abstract
An 8-year-old female spayed dog was presented due to simultaneous inability to defecate and urinate. During digital rectal examination a smooth, rounded, firm-elastic mass was detected. Laboratory results showed a 6-fold elevation of serum lactate dehydrogenase activity. Ultrasonographic, radiographic and computed tomography findings raised the suspicion of a leiomyoma. An ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy was performed under mild sedation but cytologic evaluation was inconclusive. During laparotomy the mass was located at the colorectal transition. It was completely removed while keeping the intestinal wall intact. The results of the histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry confirmed the initial tentative diagnosis of a leiomyoma. Postoperatively the patient was able to pass urine and feces spontaneously. Six months later the dog presented clinically unremarkable. Abdominal ultrasound and rectal examination exhibited no signs of recurrence. Lactate dehydrogenase activity was only marginally increased.

Abstract
Simple Summary The diagnosis of canine reproductive neoplasia remains challenging as none of the routinely performed diagnostic methods appear to have sufficient sensitivity or specificity. In recent years, advanced imaging techniques have been successfully performed in small animals; however, even though the incidence of reproductive neoplasia is high, no data are available on the performance of these techniques. This review evaluates the applicability of various diagnostic imaging modalities in dogs and describes the findings and specific patterns that may characterise different tumour types. Lamentably, some of the advanced imaging techniques have not yet been adopted as first-line diagnostic tools, although it is clear that in the future they will become important methods for the detection of male and female reproductive neoplasia. Abstract Diagnostic imaging plays an essential role in the diagnosis and management of reproductive neoplasia in dogs and cats. The initial diagnosis, staging, and planning of surgical and radiation treatment and the response to therapy all involve imaging to varying degrees. Routine radiographs, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and cross-sectional imaging in the form of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are routinely used in canine reproductive disorders. The choice of imaging modality depends on many factors, including the level of referral and the pathological information required. The biological behaviour of the tumour also guides the choice of imaging in cancer staging, and imaging may play an important role in guiding serial tumour biopsy during the course of therapy. The sophistication of imaging modalities is increasing exponentially. Each modality has advantages and disadvantages in terms of cost, availability, sensitivity, specificity, and qualities of anatomic versus functional imaging.

Abstract
In the present study, we investigated the course of atrophy in canine uterine tissue and the expression of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) within 6 months after ovariectomy (OE). In nine primipar bitches of different breeds, bilateral OE and removal of one horn was performed. Six months after surgery, the remaining uterine tissue was removed. The tissue was examined for signs of inflammation and proliferation, and for expression of ER, PR and Ki67 by means of immunohistochemistry (IHC); furthermore transcription of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß), epithelial growth factor (EGF), platelet activating factor (PAF), tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), and their specific receptors was determined by means of RT-qPCR. Serum concentrations of estrogen and progesterone were measured immediately before the first and second operation. Six month after OE, no inflammation was seen in any uterine tissue, the thickness of the stump was decreased in most bitches. Protein expression of Ki67 revealed high individual differences after the second operation. Concentration of both hormones was not significantly changed, the estrogen concentration always revealed high individual differences. The expression of ER was significantly decreased in stromal and smooth muscle cells of the uterine tissue (p < 0.01), and the expression of PR in stromal cells only (p < 0.05). The gene expression of growth factors did not change significantly between first and second operation. We conclude that complete atrophy did not occur within 6 months after OE, instead, a high percentage of uterine cells still expressed ER and PR, rendering the stump susceptible to hormone treatments.

Abstract
Different methods for lymphatic mapping in dogs, such as infusing tissues with vital dyes or radioactive substances, have been studied, aiming at the early detection of lymph node metastasis. Thus, one could anticipate therapeutic measures and, consequently, prolong the survival and improve the quality of life of the patients. The objectives of this experiment were to locate the nodes responsible for draining the uterine body and horns and to try to establish the relationship between the uterus and the medial iliac lymph nodes to contribute to the early diagnosis and prognosis of uterine disorders. We studied 15 female dogs divided into two groups (5 dead and 10 intraoperative ovariohysterectomy bitches). The dye used was patent blue V (Patent Bleu V®). It was observed that the iliac lymph node chain receives much of the uterine (horns) drainage. This method should be considered for safer studies of uterine sanity. This information suggests that evaluating these lymph nodes will allow correlating changes in their physiological status with uterine pathologies.

Abstract
A 7-year-old spayed female domestic short-haired cat presented with dysuria and hematuria that had been unresponsive to medical therapy. Imaging tests such as ultrasonography, urethrocystography and computed tomography revealed a pelvic mass compressing the urethra. Based on histological examination of the mass following surgical resection, the cat was diagnosed squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) derived from the uterine remnant. After surgery, dysuria was resolved, but on instead, urine and fecal incontinence were observed. Then, about four months after surgery, recurrence of the mass and the symptoms was observed. Consequently, the cat was ultimately euthanized. This is the first report of SCC arising from the uterine remnant in a spayed female cat.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report (1) a surgical technique for subtotal vaginectomy using a combined abdominal and vestibular approach; (2) intra- and postoperative complications; and (3) long-term outcome. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective case series. ANIMALS Female dogs (n = 11) with extensive intramural vaginal disease. METHODS Through a ventral median celiotomy, the cranial aspect of the vagina was freed and ovariohysterectomy (OVH) was performed in intact females. After episiotomy, the vaginal wall was incised at the vestibulovaginal junction cranial to the urethral orifice, and the vagina freed from any remaining pelvic attachments. Dogs were reexamined at 4 weeks and 6 months. Long-term outcome was evaluated by contacting the primary veterinarian by phone. RESULTS Five dogs had benign vaginal disease and 6 had malignant vaginal neoplasia. A combined abdominal and vestibular approach permitted subtotal vaginectomy in all dogs; 6 dogs also had OVH. No major complications occurred and clinical signs had resolved by 4 weeks. One dog with malignant neoplasia was euthanatized 3 months later for metastatic disease and 1 dog developed postoperative urinary incontinence. Local recurrence or metastases were not identified in the other dogs. CONCLUSION Combined abdominal and vestibular approach for subtotal vaginectomy allowed complete resection of extensive vaginal lesions, was not associated with major complications, and outcome was favorable.
