Abstract
The multi-day dynamics of the intensity of 40K decay fluctuations was compared with motor activity of laboratory mice, circulating cortisol in rabbits, and proliferation of fibroblast-like cultured cells L-929. A positive correlation was established between the intensity of decay fluctuations on the one hand, and total daily motor activity in mice and plasma cortisol level in rabbits, on the other hand. In addition, a negative correlation was observed between 40K decay fluctuations and proliferative activity of the cultured cells. Interestingly, these close correlations were observed not only against the background 4-day rhythm, but also in the time when any rhythmicity was absent. Thus, the intensity of 40K decay fluctuations is an indicator of a biotropic environmental factor that augments motor activity and raises the circulating cortisol in animals and down-regulates proliferation of cultured cells.

Abstract
This investigation reviews how geomagnetic activity affects the circadian variation in blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) and their variabilities of clinically healthy individuals. A small study in Alta, Norway (latitude of 70.0° N), serves to illustrate the methodology used to outline rules of procedure in exploring heliogeomagnetic effects on human physiology. Volunteers in the Alta study were monitored for at least 2 days between 18 March 2002 and 9 January 2005. Estimates of the circadian characteristics of BP and HR by cosinor and the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) indicate an increase in the circadian amplitude of systolic (S) BP on geomagnetic-disturbance days compared to quiet days (p = 0.0236). Geomagnetic stimulation was found to be circadian-phase dependent, with stimulation in the evening inducing a 49.2% increase in the circadian amplitude of SBP (p = 0.0003), not observed in relation to stimulation in the morning. In two participants monitored for 7 days, the circadian amplitude of SBP decreased by 23.4% on an extremely disturbed day but increased by 50.3% on moderately disturbed days (p = 0.0044), suggesting a biphasic (hormetic) reaction of the circadian SBP rhythm to geomagnetics. These results indicate a possible role of geomagnetic fluctuations in modulating the circadian system.

Abstract
The study compared the daily mean intensity of one-minute-step fluctuations in intensity of the secondary cosmic rays reflected by neutron count rate and dynamics of body temperature, motor activity, as well as concentration of glucocorticoid hormones in birds and rodents. A positive correlation was established between body temperature oscillations and neutron count rate fluctuations. A similar correlation was observed between physical parameter (neutron count rate), on the one hand, and daily mean motor activity and concentration of glucocorticoid hormones in the animals. The periods and phases of these processes presented in synchronous time series coincided. The facts of simultaneous variations or disturbances of the periods in dynamics of biological and physical parameters attest to their relationships. The study concluded that the infradian rhythms with the periods of 3-5 days depend on some external environmental factor related to fluctuations in intensity of secondary cosmic rays.

Abstract
The optimal psychophysiological state reflects a high level of adaptation, physical and psychological fitness of athletes for the effective implementation of sports and training activity. The biofeedback technology, based on the principles of biofeedback, allows one to master the skills of regulating the psychophysiological state according to the selected parameters for controlling the physiological function of the body. There is insufficient data on application of neurofeedback of the beta rhythm for regulation of the psychophysiological state in conditions of complex sports activity. OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of biofeedback training on the beta rhythm of the brain on the level of anxiety and the endogenous time estimation of athletes, depending on the nature of motor activity. MATERIAL AND METHODS 1020 young men aged 18-21 years old were studied. The biofeedback training on the beta rhythm of the brain was carried out with active wakefulness and open eyes, with a bipolar installation of electrodes in the Fz-Cz lead and a free electrode on the earlobe. The level of anxiety of athletes was identified with the Ch. Spielberger questionnaire [1]. The endogenous time estimation was carried out according to the «Individual minute» test (according to F. Halberg) [2]. RESULTS The biofeedback training contributed to multidirectional changes in the studied psychophysiological indicators, depending on the nature of the motor activity of athletes. After the training, in the group of cyclic sports athletes, there was a decrease in anxiety, remaining in the range of values of a high level, which may reflect the processes of fatigue or under-recovery. Representatives of speed-strength sports had a decrease in anxiety with varying values in the range of a moderate level, which reflects the achievement of a generally comfortable psychophysiological state. In the group of athletes of single combat sports, accelerated perception of time was noted, accompanied by anxiety, fussiness, decreased attention span and increased stress. Athletes of team sports had a unidirectional tendency of increasing anxiety with a variation of values in the range of moderate stress levels, which may be associated with an adaptive transition to a new level of the body functioning after the training. CONCLUSION The use of the biofeedback training on the beta rhythm of the brain in the practice of sports and rehabilitation medicine requires a thorough and detailed study of its effect on various parameters of the psychophysiological state of athletes. The development of methods for the differential application of the method, taking into account the polymetric characteristics of the initial state, type of sports activity and other factors, calls for special attention.

Abstract
The concept of autonomic regulation (aR) reflects the relevance of the function of different autonomic systems for health. aR can be captured by questionnaires. We differentiate between a trait or constitutional aR questionnaire version including 12 (short-version) or 18 items, respectively, with three subscales (orthostatic-circulatory, rest/activity and digestive regulation), and an 18-item state aR questionnaire on the preceding week with four subscales (rest/activity, orthostatic-circulatory, thermo- and digestive regulation). The validated questionnaires show satisfying to good reliability and robust validity with clear construct validity. In this article, we summarized the actually available literature on aR and the use of aR questionnaires in clinical and observational studies. We described the relationship of high aR with health and in case of low aR or loss of regulation with disease and functional disorder in the three (four) different subscales and functional systems, such as rest/activity, orthostatic-circulatory or digestive regulation (thermoregulation) with the consecutive therapeutic need. Finally, we gave perspectives of its further application in clinical research.

Abstract
The investigation of the interaction of genes and environment in the context of mental health and personality yields important new insights for a better understanding of human nature. Both antenatal and postnatal environmental factors have been considered as potential modulators of genetic activity. Antenatally, especially smoking or alcohol drinking habits of the mother dramatically influence the health of the child during pregnancy and even later on in life. In the present study we would like to introduce a more "distant" factor that is not under the control of the becoming mother but that nevertheless plays a potential role for the health of the unborn child later on in adulthood. Here, we retrospectively investigate the influence of solar activity (while the child is still in the uterus of the becoming mother) on brain structure (with a focus on hippocampus and amygdala volume) and personality in adulthood. We observe an interaction of a genetic variant (rs41423247) of the glucocorticoid receptor gene (NR3C1) and solar activity in the first trimester after conception on both hippocampal volume and the personality trait neuroticism in adulthood in N = 254 participants. The NR3C1 gene is the focus of interest, because of its influence on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and negative emotionality. Carriers of the CC variant of rs41423247 grown in the womb under the influence of high sun radiation (high solar activity) show both the highest hippocampal volume in the left hemisphere and lowest neuroticism scores. The present findings should encourage researchers in psychology and psychiatry to include also environmental influences such as solar activity besides genetics to better understand the etiogenesis of psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Periodic episodes of increased sunspot activity (solar electromagnetic storms) occur with 10-11 and 5-6 year periodicities and may be associated with measurable biological events. We investigated whether this sunspot periodicity characterized the incidence of Pap smear-determined cervical epithelial histopathologies and human physiologic functions. From January 1983 through December 2003, monthly averages were obtained for solar flux and sunspot numbers; six infectious, premalignant and malignant changes in the cervical epithelium from 1,182,421 consecutive, serially independent, screening Pap smears (59°9″N, 4°29″E); and six human physiologic functions of a healthy man (oral temperature, pulse, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiration, and peak expiratory flow), which were measured ∼5 times daily during ∼34,500 self-measurement sessions (44°56″N, 93°8″W). After determining that sunspot numbers and solar flux, which were not annually rhythmic, occurred with a prominent 10-year and a less-prominent 5.75-year periodicity during this 21-year study span, each biological data set was analyzed with the same curve-fitting procedures. All six annually rhythmic Pap smear-detected infectious, premalignant and malignant cervical epithelial pathologies showed strong 10-year and weaker 5.75-year cycles, as did all six self-measured, annually rhythmic, physiologic functions. The phases (maxima) for the six histopathologic findings and five of six physiologic measurements were very near, or within, the first two quarters following the 10-year solar maxima. These findings add to the growing evidence that solar magnetic storm periodicities are mirrored by cyclic phase-locked rhythms of similar period length or lengths in human physiology and pathophysiology.

Abstract
Chronomes are time structures consisting of multifrequency rhythms, elements of chaos, and trends in chaotic and rhythmic endpoints. Chronomics maps the dynamics of organisms' broad interactions with the environment near and far, rather than merely the daily routines. We introduced the chronomics of heart rate variability (HRV), characterized by a broad time structure, that includes the prominent circadians and also ultradian (notably about 8h and about 12h) and infradian (notably about-weekly, about-yearly, and about 10-yearly) changes, in addition to undergoing trends with aging. Alterations in these HRV chronomes are known to predict the presence of disease in the near future. Thus, for the health and safety of astronauts, HRV chronomes should be assessed before, during and after the mission in the International Space Station to check for any alteration. Future work should focus on how phenomena in the cosmos, including helio- and geomagnetics, can affect physiological chronomes, those of the HRV in particular.

Abstract
A multi-center four-hourly sampling of many tissues for 7 days (00:00 on April 5-20:00 to April 11, 2004), on rats standardized for 1 month in two rooms on antiphasic lighting regimens happened to start on the day after the second extremum of a moderate double magnetic storm gauged by the planetary geomagnetic Kp index (which at each extremum reached 6.3 international [arbitrary] units) and by an equatorial index Dst falling to -112 and -81 nT, respectively, the latter on the first day of the sampling. Neuroendocrine chronomes (specifically circadian time structures) differed during magnetically affected and quiet days. The circadian melatonin rhythm had a lower MESOR and lower circadian amplitude and tended to advance in acrophase, while the MESOR and amplitude of the hypothalamic circadian melatonin rhythm were higher during the days with the storm. The circadian parameters of circulating corticosterone were more labile during the days including the storm than during the last three quiet days. Feedsidewards within the pineal-hypothalamic-adrenocortical network constitute a mechanism underlying physiological and probably also pathological associations of the brain and heart with magnetic storms. Investigators in many fields can gain from at least recording calendar dates in any publication so that freely available information on geomagnetic, solar and other physical environmental activity can be looked up. In planning studies and before starting, one may gain from consulting forecasts and the highly reliable nowcasts, respectively.

Abstract
Afew puzzles relating to a small fraction of my endeavors in the 1950s are summarized herein, with answers to a few questions of the Editor-in-Chief, to suggest that the rules of variability in time complement the rules of genetics as a biological variability in space. I advocate to replace truisms such as a relative constancy or homeostasis, that have served bioscience very well for very long. They were never intended, however, to lower a curtain of ignorance over everyday physiology. In raising these curtains, we unveil a range of dynamics, resolvable in the data collection and as-one-goes analysis by computers built into smaller and smaller devices, for a continued self-surveillance of the normal and for an individualized detection of the abnormal. The current medical art based on spotchecks interpreted by reference to a time-unqualified normal range can become a science of time series with tests relating to the individual in inferential statistical terms. This is already doable for the case of blood pressure, but eventually should become possible for many other variables interpreted today only based on the quicksand of clinical trials on groups. These ignore individual differences and hence the individual's needs. Chronomics (mapping time structures) with the major aim of quantifying normalcy by dynamic reference values for detecting earliest risk elevation, also yields the dividend of allowing molecular biology to focus on the normal as well as on the grossly abnormal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To review mechanisms of circadian variations in heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure variability (BPV) and mortality and morbidity due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD). METHODS Results from 7-day/24-h HRV and BPV are interpreted by gender and age-specified reference values in the context of a Medline search. RESULTS Abnormal HRV and BPV measured around the clock for 7 days provides information on the risk of subsequent morbid events in subjects without obvious heart disease and without abnormality outside the conventional (in the sense of chronobiologically unquantified) physiological range. Meditation, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, n-3 fatty acids and estrogens may have a beneficial influence on HRV, but there is no definitive outcome-validated therapy. Low HRV has been associated with a risk of arrhythmias and arrhythmic death, unstable angina, myocardial infarction, progression of heart failure and atherosclerosis. BPV may be characterized by treatable circadian-hyper-amplitude-tension (CHAT), which can be transient '24-h CHAT' or '7-day-CHAT', MESOR-hypertension and/or an unusually-timed (odd) circadian acrophase (ecphasia), all associated with an increased risk of stroke, stroke death, myocardial infarction, and kidney disease. CONCLUSIONS Precise insight into the patho-physiology in time of HRV and BPV is needed with development of a consensus on best measures of HRV for clinical purposes and to determine when a 7-day record interpreted chronobiologically suffices and when it does not, for detection within as well as outside the conventional normal range, for diagnostic clinical practice and to direct therapy of risk greater than that associated with hypertension, smoking or any other risk factor.
