Diazocine-functionalized TATA platforms

Recently, it has been shown that the thermochemical cis→trans isomerization of azobenzenes is accelerated by a factor of more than 1000 by electronic coupling to a gold surface via a conjugated system with 11 bonds and a distance of 14 Å. The corresponding molecular architecture consists of a platform (triazatriangulenium (TATA)) which adsorbs on the gold surface, with an acetylene spacer standing upright, like a post in the middle of the platform and the azobenzene unit mounted on top. The rate acceleration is due to a very peculiar thermal singlet-triplet-singlet mechanism mediated by bulk gold. To investigate this mechanism further and to examine scope and limitation of the "spin-switch catalysis" we now prepared analogous diazocine systems. Diazocines, in contrast to azobenzenes, are stable in the cis-configuration. Upon irradiation with light of 405 nm the cis-configuration isomerizes to the trans-form, which slowly returns back to the stable cis-isomer. To investigate the thermal trans→cis isomerization as a function of the conjugation to the metal surface, we connected the acetylene spacer in meta (weak conjugation) and in para (strong conjugation) position. Both isomers form ordered monolayers on Au(111) surfaces.

Dissecting contact mechanics from quantum interference in single-molecule junctions of stilbene derivatives

Electronic factors in molecules such as quantum interference and cross-conjugation can lead to dramatic modulation and suppression of conductance in single-molecule junctions. Probing such effects at the single-molecule level requires simultaneous measurements of independent junction properties, as conductance alone cannot provide conclusive evidence of junction formation for molecules with low conductivity. Here, we compare the mechanics of the conducting para-terminated 4,4'-di(methylthio)stilbene and moderately conducting 1,2-bis(4-(methylthio)phenyl)ethane to that of insulating meta-terminated 3,3'-di(methylthio)stilbene single-molecule junctions. We simultaneously measure force and conductance across single-molecule junctions and use force signatures to obtain independent evidence of junction formation and rupture in the meta-linked cross-conjugated molecule even when no clear low-bias conductance is measured. By separately quantifying conductance and mechanics, we identify the formation of atypical 3,3'-di(methylthio)stilbene molecular junctions that are mechanically stable but electronically decoupled. While theoretical studies have envisaged many plausible systems where quantum interference might be observed, our experiments provide the first direct quantitative study of the interplay between contact mechanics and the distinctively quantum mechanical nature of electronic transport in single-molecule junctions.

Energy Transfer by a Hopping Mechanism in Dinuclear IrIII/RuII Complexes: A Molecular Wire?

The synthesis and electrochemical and photophysical properties of a series of heterodinuclear ruthenium-iridium complexes linked by a modular para-phenylene bridge [Ir-ph(n)-Ru]3+ (Ir=Ir(ppyFF)2bpy, Ru=Ru(bpy)3, ppyFF=2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine), bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, ph=phenylene, n=2, 3, 4, 5) are reported. The use of a high-energy iridium complex, which can act as an energy donor when coupled to the lower energy ruthenium-based component, allows the investigation of photoinduced energy transfer from the excited iridium-centre to the ruthenium fragment (energy acceptor). The rate constants of the energy-transfer processes are determined by time-resolved emission and sub-picosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Interestingly, there is almost no decrease in transfer efficiency or rates as the length between the two chromophores (number of spacers) is increased. This "molecular wire" behavior indicates the dominance of the incoherent hopping mechanism, allowing a very fast energy transfer over long distances (with n = 5 the metal-to-metal distance is estimated to be 32.5 Angstrom). This is the first case in which such behavior is observed for metal complexes, and could lead to new development in molecular electronics.
