Effects of induced cryptorchidism in bulls

Endocrine testicular function and spermatogenesis persist in calves after partial scrotal resection but not Burdizzo castration

Bull calves for fattening are often castrated during the first weeks of life. Because androgens stimulate growth, there is an interest in males that are infertile but exposed to endogenous testicular steroids. Such a situation occurs in cryptorchids and has been imitated by shortening the scrotum to an extent that the testes are located in a near-inguinal position. In this study, effects of partial scrotal resection (SR) and Burdizzo castration (BZ) on endocrine testicular function, testes histology and on weight at slaughter were studied and compared to orchidectomized (OR) and gonad-intact calves (CO; n = 10 per group; age at castration, 54 ± 3 days; fattening period, 474 ± 11 days). Plasma testosterone concentrations were determined repeatedly, and testes were collected for histopathology at slaughter. We hypothesized that SR inhibits spermatogenesis without loss of testicular steroidogenesis. Group SR animals gained more weight than groups OR and BZ (P < 0.01). Plasma testosterone concentration increased in groups SR and CO (P < 0.01 vs. BZ and OR). Histologically, in all SR animals, testicular and epididymal tissue was identified with a seminiferous epithelium of up to three-cell layers in two animals. Germ cells including elongated spermatids were present in three animals. Shortening of the scrotum thus induced varying degrees of testicular degeneration but 3/10 animals had to be suspected as fertile. In one BZ animal, spermatids were identified whereas in the remaining BZ animals, testes and epididymides consisted of sclerotic fibrous tissue. Partial SR thus induced a cryptorchid-like status but fertility in individual animals must be assumed.

Cryptorchidism in North American cattle: breed predisposition and clinical findings

The authors analyzed data collected over 26 years from 143 cryptorchid bulls admitted to 23 North American veterinary schools. Breed was found to be a risk factor. The medical records of 41 cryptorchid cattle were also obtained, and the physical examination findings, method of diagnosis, and surgical management were recorded. Polled Hereford and Shorthorn cattle were at significantly greater risk for cryptorchidism; however, polled cattle were not at an increased risk for cryptorchidism. Cryptorchidism was most commonly diagnosed by external palpation of the superficial inguinal rings and by palpation per rectum. Unilateral cryptorchidism appears to be more common than bilateral cryptorchidism. The incidence of cryptorchidism was 69% for the left testis and 31% for the right testis. Sixty-six percent of the retained testes were located in the inguinal canal. Cryptorchidectomy was performed through an inguinal, paramedian or flank approach in 26 bulls. Cryptorchidism appears to be rare in bovine bulls admitted to North American veterinary schools, with 1.7 cases per 1,000 bull admissions. We suggest that cryptorchidism be considered an inherited trait in the Shorthorn and Polled Hereford breeds.

Effects of sexual condition and age on carcass characteristics and grading of Sussex cattle in Zimbabwe

The effects of sexual condition and age at slaughter on carcass characteristics were investigated in Sussex cattle. At three months of age 93 male calves were allocated to three sexual treatments: entire, cryptorchid and castrate. The cattle were weaned at eight months, grazed on range and then placed into feedlots for 90 days prior to slaughter at 15, 18 or 21 months of age. Entire and cryptorchid cattle gained more (P < 0.01) weight and had heavier and learner carcasses than the castrates. Although cattle slaughtered at 15 months of age had better fleshing grades than those slaughtered at 18 or 21 months of age, no animal was down-graded for exhibiting marked secondary sexual characteristics.

Pattern of protein profiles of reproductive organs after induced bilateral cryptorchidism in albino rats

Bilateral cryptorchidism was induced surgically in albino rats and pattern of protein profiles was studied in reproductive organs. Cryptorchidism activated tissue proteolysis leading to overall degradation in soluble and structural protein fractions and in amino acids leading to prevalence of negative nitrogen balance in the reproductive organs. The testicular hypoalbuminic and hypoglobulinic conditions seem to be responsible for oligo-astheno-spermia associated with cryptorchidism.
