Abstract
Geographic atrophy (GA) is a prevalent cause of vision loss among elderly and is associated with a significant loss of function. We reviewed the current literature to assess the effect of GA on patients' daily lives and well-being. We record and organize the signs, symptoms, and impacts that are important in life with GA. Further, we examined the impact of GA on vision-related quality of life. The main complaint among patients was difficulties regarding daily tasks, especially reading and other near activities. However, a large proportion of patients also reported fear, frustration, and anxiety as salient symptoms with large impact. Many patients do not have adequate information about their condition as well as the prognosis. The most commonly used measure of patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) is the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ), that reflects the severity of impact on 12 subscales, from where near activities, general vision, mental health, and role difficulties had the lowest scores. Longitudinal studies of GA and the impact of low-vision rehabilitation efforts on health-related quality of life are sparse but suggest a significant improvement on several items. PROM is included in clinical trials, and so far, no drug has shown to improve the functional outcome in terms of PROM.

Abstract
AIM To identify and assess the quality of current validated questionnaires that could be used to evaluate ocular neuropathic pain and its associated aetiologies. METHODS A literature search was performed on MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO and The Cochrane Library. Articles evaluating questionnaires for ocular neuropathic pain and its associated aetiologies were included. Data on psychometric properties, validity, and reliability of the questionnaires was extracted and analysed using a set of quality criteria. Clinical and demographical associations with ocular neuropathic pain were also reviewed. RESULTS The search generated 1738 results with 61 publications meeting the inclusion criteria. The 61 publications covered 28 questionnaires including 3 ocular pain, 12 dry eye disease, 2 blepharitis, 2 refractive surgery, 3 contact lens wear, 3 Sjogren's Syndrome, and 3 that were non-disease-specific. Only 57 publications provided enough data on psychometric properties and validity of the questionnaire to be included for quality assessment. The Contact Lens Discomfort Index (CLDI) had the highest rated psychometric properties, whereas the English version of the Ocular Comfort Index (OCI) provided the most data on psychometric properties (9 out of 10 criteria). Most ocular pain and disease-specific questionnaires contained appropriate items to assess ocular pain in specific populations. However, non-disease-specific ophthalmic questionnaires demonstrated poor reliability and validity when evaluating ocular pain. CONCLUSION Ocular pain questionnaires can potentially diagnose ocular neuropathic pain. Disease-specific questionnaires were limited to their target populations, and non-disease-specific ophthalmic questionnaires were unreliable. Further studies are required to determine the most appropriate questionnaire to evaluate ocular neuropathic pain.

Abstract
Purpose Since quantification and communication of ocular pain is important for a healthier patient follow-up and postoperative guidance, reliable measures like the Ophthalmic Pain Assessment Survey (OPAS) are needed to assess the outcome and management of different operations. To address that need, we carried out the adaptation of OPAS into Turkish to reach different age groups and backgrounds, widening the use of OPAS on patients who underwent an ophthalmic operation. Methods We used back-translation method and achieved cultural adaptation through content validity scoring by 5 independent ophthalmologists. The survey is then administered three times: preoperatively, postoperatively within 24 hours, and finally a week later in the follow-up visit. Validity is measured in comparison to Visual Analog Scale using Spearman's correlation coefficient and reliability is measured using Cronbach's alpha. Factor analysis is performed by principal component analysis and rotation is performed using Varimax method when necessary. Results We reached a total of 132 patients with a mean age of 64.2 years. Most of them underwent phacoemulsification (n = 83), followed by PRK (n = 37). Overall, the T-OPAS demonstrated good reliability (mean C. alpha: 0.830) and its correlation with the VAS was especially high (S. coeff. >0.5) in the first three sections in all three surveys. Factor analysis yielded 5 subscales, allowing us to shape the final form of T-OPAS. Conclusion Through this adaptation of OPAS into a foreign language, we present a reliable and valid tool for postoperative pain quantification, allowing objective measurement of pain in different populations such as the elderly.

Abstract
Background Although visual acuity and optical coherence tomography (OCT) are most widely used as outcomes in treatment of neovascular age-related Macular Degeneration (nAMD), patient reported outcome measures are increasingly recognized. National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ 25) was developed to capture the perceived visual function. Yet, evidence of psychometric performance in the target population is required. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of NEI-VFQ 25 in a Norwegian cohort of newly diagnosed nAMD patients followed with a Treat and Extend (T/E) protocol. Methods Patients receiving intravitreal anti–vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injection treatment according to a T/E protocol completed a Norwegian translation of NEI-VFQ 25, EuroQoL Health Questionnaire (EQ-5D), and Patient acceptable symptom state (PASS 5) at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months. In addition, a control population completed the same questionnaires. Visual acuity was assessed with LogMar for best/treated eye. Validity testing comprised face validity by a 0–10 numeric rating scale about relevance of NEI-VFQ 25 as well as regression analyses and correlations between NEI-VFQ 25 and other relevant variables. Reliability was examined with Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach’s alpha for internal consistency were performed. Responsiveness, discriminatory power and predictive value were also explored. Results Number of respondents at baseline, after 3, 6 and 12 months was 197, 186, 176 and 168, respectively. The control population comprised 26 individuals. Face validity of NEI-VFQ 25 had a mean (SD) of 7.8 (1.7) (n = 84). NEI-VFQ was significantly correlated to visual acuity and PASS 5 as well as EQ-5D at baseline. Reliability (ICC) of the overall and sub scores for the patients/controls ranged from 0.49–0.97/0.59–0.97. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.61–0.85. Discriminatory power was confirmed by significant differences of the overall score between controls and patients (P < 0.001). NEI-VFQ 25 indicates responsiveness showing overall score improved significantly (P ≤ 0.001) from baseline to 3 months. NEI-VFQ 25, general health and visual acuity at baseline were the strongest predictors for how patients reported vision after 6 months follow-up. Conclusion NEI-VFQ 25 showed acceptable psychometric performance, which supports that the Norwegian version can be used to monitor patients treated for nAMD.

Abstract
Aim. To examine subscale and total scores of NEI-VFQ questionnaire of type 2 diabetes patients at different diabetic retinopathy (DRP) stages. Methods. A total number of 201 patients have been included. Prior to ophthalmological examination all patients participated in the NEI-VFQ questionnaire. The patients were divided into 5 groups according to the International Clinical Diabetic Retinopathy Disease Severity Scale (ICDRS). Results. The diabetes duration in general health scores (p = 0.029); the stage (p = 0.011); and clinically significant macular edema (CSME) (p = 0.019) in general vision were found to be the most efficient factors. In near vision activities the most efficient factors were near vision acuity (NVA) (p = 0.0001) and DRP stage (p = 0.020). EDTRS visual acuity was found to be the most efficient factor in vision specific role difficulties (p = 0.034) and dependency (p = 0.011) whereas Snellen visual acuity was found to be among the most effective factors in distance activities (DA) (p = 0.014) and total scores (p = 0.026). Discussion. Difference was based not on the diabetes duration, clinically significant cataract (CSCat), CSME presence, and DRP stage but on the visual acuity levels of the better seeing eye of the patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the vision-related quality of life (QoL) of glaucoma patients in terms of the correlation between visual field (VF) loss and National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-39 (NEI VFQ-39) survey. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 244 glaucoma patients were examined with monocular Humphrey 24-2 central full threshold and Esterman binocular VF tests. Patients were grouped according to their monocular VFs done by Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study (AGIS) classification and Esterman binocular VF efficiency scores. NEI VFQ-39 was applied for the evaluation of vision-related QoL. RESULTS NEI VFQ-39 subscales and total scores were evaluated and the highest mean average values were in "color vision" (92.00±16.59) and "social functioning" (90.74±15.98). The lowest mean average values were in "general health" (54.76±18.86) and "general vision" (66.03±17.59). All the subscales except "general health" and "ocular pain" showed positive correlations with the monocular and Esterman binocular VF groupings. Pearson correlation analysis between NEI VFQ-39 subscales and the AGIS VF classification-based groups indicated that the subscales had statistically significant negative correlations except the "general health" (r=-0.151, P=0.018) and "ocular pain" (r=-0.048, P=0.455). The highest correlation with AGIS VF classification was in "driving" (r=-0.477, P=0.001) and "general vision" (r=-0.446, P=0.000) subscales. There was statistically significant correlation between NEI VFQ-39 subscales and Esterman binocular VF groups except "general health" (r=-0.064, P=0.318) and "ocular pain" (r=-0.062, P=0.337). The highest negative correlation was in "distant activities" (r=-0.522, P=0.000) and the lowest negative correlation was in "color vision" (r=-0.416, P=0.000) subscales. The highest correlation between binocular distant and binocular near-visual acuities was in "distant activities" and the lowest correlation was in "role difficulties" subscales. CONCLUSIONS There is statistically significant correlation between the glaucoma patients' VF loss and the vision-related QoL. The evaluation of self-reported vision status in glaucoma patients may be a guide for the rehabilitation of their disabilities in vision-related daily activities.

Abstract
PURPOSE A reduction in quality of life (QoL) during an active phase of disease has been shown for patients with uveitis of various age groups. Adult uveitis patients were shown to also have reduced QoL-values despite disease being quiescent, but adolescents have not been investigated in this respect. METHODS This clinic-based, cross-sectional pilot study assessed the overall health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adolescents (11-18 years) with a history of inactive uveitis and good visual function. Two independent generic (non-disease-specific) instruments were applied, the Inventory for Assessing the Quality of Life and the German KINDL-R-questionnaire. RESULTS Thirty-seven adolescents, 20 females (54%) and 17 males with a mean age of 15 ± 3 years and diagnosis since 5 ± 2 years participated. Subgroups with a reduced HRQoL were those with anterior and intermediate localization of uveitis, bilateral disease, application of immunosuppressive therapy, a short time since diagnosis, and a high number of recurrences. CONCLUSION Even despite quiescence of disease and good visual function, certain risk factors may result in a decreased HRQoL in juvenile uveitis patients. Our findings support the need of further evaluation of HRQoL in this patient group, the validation of specific psychometric inventories for this disease and the establishment of interdisciplinary collaboration including psychological counselling.
