Self-efficacy and work-related performance: The integral role of individual differences

The present study estimated the unique contribution of self-efficacy to work-related performance controlling for personality (the Big 5 traits), intelligence or general mental ability, and job or task experience. Results, based on a meta-analysis of the relevant literatures, revealed that overall, across all studies and moderator conditions, the contribution of self-efficacy relative to purportedly more distal variables is relatively small. Within moderator categories, there were several cases in which self-efficacy made unique contributions to work-related performance. For example, self-efficacy predicted performance in jobs or tasks of low complexity but not those of medium or high complexity, and self-efficacy predicted performance for task but not job performance. Overall, results suggest that the predictive validity of self-efficacy is attenuated in the presence of individual differences, though this attenuation does depend on the context.

Relative effect of father's education and "psychoticism" on some measures of aptitude in Iran

This paper compares differences in mean test scores of contrasting groups formed in terms of parental education and psychoticism. Subjects were 747 male and 239 female Iranian university applicants. Psychoticism was measured by a Persian adaptation of Eysenck's test. Mean differences between groups with very high and very low psychoticism scores on tests of general intelligence and Persian language are larger than those between groups with college-educated versus illiterate or semiliterate fathers. The reverse is found on a test of English language.

Personality factors among adolescent boys

A Hebrew version of Junior Eysenck Personality Inventory was administered to 557 boys from Grades 7 to 11 in Israel. Comparisons of the findings obtained for each of the five age groups indicate the equivalence of Extraversion, Neuroticism, and Lie scales for these particular ages, while comparisons with data from England suggest the cross-cultural equivalence of these personality measures. In the two sets of comparisons, the transferability of these scales was examined in terms of the estimates of internal consistency of the three scales, the pattern of their intercorrelations and of their relations with age and intelligence. Comparisons of factor loadings and item statistics of the Extraversion, Neuroticism, and Lie scale items further suggest that the transferability of the inventory extends to the level of items and also applies to the particular set of exceptional items which detract from the internal consistency and unifactorial structure of the scales.

Some personality correlates of self-rated academic success

Using subjects' own ratings of their academic performance, a group of american university students were divided into academically successful (n = 312) and unsuccessful (n = 170) subgroups. A comparison of mean scores of the two groups on nine personality variables convered by Eysenck's PEN Inventory and Lanyon's Psychological Screening Inventory showed that academic success, as rated by subjects themselves, is associated with low psychoticism, neuroticism, and discomfort but high extraversion and defensiveness.
