The rise and fall of scary numbers: The effect of perceived trends on future estimates, severity ratings, and help-allocations in a cancer context

Trend effects on perceived avalanche hazard

Hazard-level forecasts constitute an important risk mitigation tool to reduce loss of economic values and human life. Avalanche forecasts represent an example of this. As for many other domains, avalanche risk is communicated using a color-coded, categorical risk scale aimed at informing the public about past, current, and future risk. We report the results from three experiments in which we tested if an irrelevant past trend in forecasted avalanche danger affects perceptions of current and future avalanche risk. Our sample consisted of individuals from three different populations targeted by national avalanche warning services. All three experiments showed that the perception of avalanche risk is influenced by the trend, but that the effect is opposite for perceptions of current and expectations of future avalanche risk. While future avalanche risk is extrapolated in the same direction as the change from the previous day, we found that perceived current risk appears to be based on an average of past and current risk. These effects diminish when we provide participants with a scale indicating the exact level of avalanche danger. For most of our measurement instruments, however, the effects remain significant. These results imply that targeted populations may consider historic information more than was intended by the sender. As such, our results have implications for both avalanche warning services and risk communication in general.

Leveraging Dynamic Norm Messages to Promote Counter-Normative Health Behaviors: The Moderating Role of Current and Future Injunctive Norms, Attitude and Self-Efficacy

Describing that many people perform a certain behavior has been known to increase people's behavioral intentions. However, the underlying premise is that the behavior must be high in prevalence. The present study examined whether describing low-prevalence behaviors (static norm) and framing low-prevalence behaviors as increasing in popularity across time (dynamic norm) may increase behavioral intentions in the context of getting the flu shot and eating less red meat. In addition, the study aimed to examine whether other behavioral antecedents could moderate the effect of viewing these normative messages. An experiment that randomly assigned participants to view either dynamic norm messages, static norm messages, and no messages (control) was conducted. Results indicated that for the behavior of eating less red meat, viewing a static norm message backfired while viewing a dynamic norm message did not. Moreover, the effect of viewing low-prevalence norm messages was moderated by other behavioral antecedents such as, current and future injunctive norm perceptions and attitude. These findings contribute to the theoretical and practical understanding of utilizing low-prevalence norms for persuasion.

Showing Data About People: A Design Space of Anthropographics

When showing data about people, visualization designers and data journalists often use design strategies that presumably help the audience relate to those people. The term anthropographics has been recently coined to refer to this practice and the resulting visualizations. Anthropographics is a rich and growing area, but the work so far has remained scattered. Despite preliminary empirical work and a few web essays written by practitioners, there is a lack of clear language for thinking about and communicating about anthropographics. We address this gap by introducing a conceptual framework and a design space for anthropographics. Our design space consists of seven elementary design dimensions that can be reasonably hypothesized to have some effect on prosocial feelings or behavior. It extends a previous design space and is informed by an analysis of 105 visualizations collected from newspapers, websites, and research articles. We use our conceptual framework and design space to discuss trade-offs, common design strategies, as well as future opportunities for design and research in the area of anthropographics.

Type and amount of help as predictors for impression of helpers

Impression of helpers can vary as a function of the magnitude of helping (amount of help) and of situational and motivational aspects (type of help). Over three studies conducted in Sweden and the US, we manipulated both the amount and the type of help in ten diverse vignettes and measured participants' impressions of the described helpers. Impressions were almost unaffected when increasing the amount of help by 500%, but clearly affected by several type of help-manipulations. Particularly, helpers were less positively evaluated if they had mixed motives for helping, did not experience intense emotions or empathy, or if helping involved no personal sacrifice. In line with the person-centered theory of moral judgment, people seem to form impressions of helpers primarily based on the presumed underlying processes and motives of prosociality rather than its consequences.
